Inventing Around Edison’S Lamp Patent: The Role Of Patents In Stimulating Downstream Development And Competition, Ron D. Katznelson, John Howells
Inventing Around Edison’S Lamp Patent: The Role Of Patents In Stimulating Downstream Development And Competition, Ron D. Katznelson, John Howells
Ron D. Katznelson
We provide the first detailed empirical study of inventing around patent claims. The enforcement of Edison’s incandescent lamp patent in 1891-1894 stimulated a surge of patenting. Most of these later patents disclosed inventions around the Edison patent. Some of these patents introduced important new technology in their own right and became prior art for new fields, indicating that invention around patents contributes to dynamic efficiency. Contrary to widespread contemporary understanding, the Edison lamp patent did not suppress technological advance in electric lighting. The market position of General Electric (“GE”), the Edison patent-owner, weakened through the period of this patent’s enforcement.

Fabrication Of Micro-Meltblown Filtration Media Using Parallel Plate Die Design, Mohammad A. Hassan
Fabrication Of Micro-Meltblown Filtration Media Using Parallel Plate Die Design, Mohammad A. Hassan
Mohammad Abouelreesh Hassan
Meltblown fibers are typically produced using a die technology based on the slot concept, an extension of the sheet die technology with a series of holes substituting the center rectangular slot of the sheet die. While this prevalent technology has met with considerable success, an economical, facile design would be desirable. In this study a new parallel plate die concept to fabricate micro-meltblown fibers that offers simplicity, ease of use, and low cost was examined. The new die concept had parallel plates forming channels for polymer melt to flow through with a set of air holes surrounding them. This die …

Adrian Bonilla-Petriciolet
This study introduces the application of nature-inspired metaheuristic algorithms for performing critical point calculations in multicomponent reservoir fluids. These algorithms are Monkey - Krill Herd Hybrid (MAKHA), Intelligent Firefly Algorithm (IFA), Covariance Matrix Adaptation Evolution Strategy (CMAES), Artificial Bee Colony (ABC), Cuckoo Search (CS), Bare Bones Particle Swarm Optimization (BBPSO) and Flower Pollination Algorithm (FPA). Capabilities and limitations of these optimizers have been analyzed using black oil, volatile and condensate reservoir fluids with fifty components. Results showed that BBPSO, IFA and FPA outperformed other nature-inspired methods for critical point calculations in tested fluids. In particular, BBPSO offered the best efficiency-reliability …

Nonlinear 3d Finite Element Modeling For Structural Failure Analysis Of Concrete Sleepers/Bearers At An Urban Turnout Diamond, Minh Vu, Sakdirat Kaewunruen, Mario Attard
Sakdirat Kaewunruen
Railway urban turnout is a special track system used to divert a train from a particular direction or a particular track onto other directions or other tracks. It is a structural grillage system that consists of steel rails, points (or called “switches”), crossings, steel plates, rubber pads, insulators, fasteners, screw spikes, beam bearers (either tim- ber, polymer, steel, or concrete), ballast and formation. There are two types of turnouts, a conventional turnout and a tangential turnout. Standard conventional turnouts are designed typically for straight main line track. The combination of switch length, heel angle, and cross rate defines the turnout …

Tilting Mechanism For A Four Wheeler, Dr V Balambica, Er Vishwa Deepak
Innovative Research Publications IRP India
Here in this paper a tilting mechanism is carried out for a normal fuel run track car to give it the flexibility of a motor cycle. This feature enables the car to tilt in to the curve while negotiating it. Our analysis shows that to increase the maximum curve at speed by more than 50%. The method we have used is a simple mechanical tilting system controlled by a simple DC stepper motor which is controlled electronically. This tilting mechanism if successful should dramatically increase the maximum speed in curves. This should also provide the advantages of increased passenger comfort …

Innovative Research Publications IRP India
Utilization of industrial waste products as supplementary cementitious materials (SCM) in concrete making is very important aspect in view of economical, environmental and technical reasons. As these supplementary cementitious materials have different chemical and mineralogical composition, their effect on micro structural properties and strength performance vary considerably. While producing paper, various wastes come out from the various processes in paper industries. The preliminary waste from paper industry is named as hypo sludge. In this study the material obtained from the paper industry waste (hypo sludge) is admixed with Portland cement at different replacement levels. The properties of concrete investigated include …

Non-Linear Spectral Unmixing Of Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3 ) Data, Keshav Dev Singh, Ramakrishnan Desikan
Innovative Research Publications IRP India
Most of the approaches to solve the unmixing problem are based on the Linear Mixing Model (LMM) which is questionable. Therefore, nonlinear spectral model is generally used to study the effects of multiple scattering in the complex surfaces. In this paper, we have demonstrated the application of Radiative Transform Equation (RTE) based Hapke multi scattering model. The Hapke model based non-linear spectral unmixing is carried out on a Moon Mineralogy Mapper (M3 ) data. The values of six non-linear Hapke's model parameters are estimated using a MATLAB based algorithm after optimizing the Hapke corrected M3-Endmembers and modeled spectra through minimum …

Innovative Research Publications IRP India
In this paper we shall introduce a new system for providing wireless network communication over a specified area using ’lighter than air’ balloons. This technology will replace the existing fiber optic network system. This will be done by using a tethered balloon along with the payload (containing a receiver, a transmitter and a radio communication device). This payload will be suspended from the ground at an altitude (depending on the area of coverage required). Users under this area will be able to access this system directly for internet connectivity. This system can be used over large areas like universities, companies and …

Modification In Weighted Clustering Algorithm For Faster Clustering Formation By Considering Absolute Attributes Of Mobile Nodes And Greedy Method For Role Selection Of Mobile Nodes In Manet, Vijayanand Kumar, Rajesh Kumar Yadav
Innovative Research Publications IRP India
Wirelessly allocated mobile nodes which are configured in a geographically adjacent to each other can form cluster by applying rules on the mobile nodes. Each cluster family have different members with different assigned roles such as cluster head, cluster members, gateway members and ordinary nodes which can perform roles of any three mentioned roles as the time progresses based on absolute and relative attribute information. Absolute attributes of mobile nodes can be mobility, energy consumed and entropy of the mobile node. Relative attributes can be considered as neighbour information and sum of distances of neighbours etc. Relative attributes are the …

Energy Aware Forwarding In Content Centric Based Multihop Wireless Ad Hoc Networks, Rana Asif Rehman, Byung-Seo Kim
Rana Asif Rehman
Content centric networking (CCN) is a newly proposed futuristic Internet paradigm in which communication depends on the decoupling of content names from their locations. In CCN-based multihop wireless ad hoc networks, the participating nodes show dynamic topology, intermittent connectivity, channels fluctuation, and severe constraints such as limited battery power. In the case of traffic congestion, the affected nodes die early owing to the shortage of battery power. Consequently, all pending request entries are also destroyed, which further degrades the network performance as well as the node working lifetime. In this study, we have proposed a novel energy aware transmission scheme …
