Increasing Stem Participation And Student Success Of Developmental Mathematics Students At An Urban Community College, Vanessa A. Hill
Increasing Stem Participation And Student Success Of Developmental Mathematics Students At An Urban Community College, Vanessa A. Hill
Doctoral Dissertations
This mixed method, quantitative and qualitative, study explores the effects of a curriculum with an emphasis on scientific, technological, and engineering focused problems and careers on student success and interest in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM). The setting is an urban community college where in the spring of 2016, 71% of the students tested into developmental mathematics (STCC, 2017).
The course of study was Algebra one, a developmental, non-college credit bearing, mathematics course. Students had the option of two paths for the subsequent course, a terminal college level mathematics class, or a STEM pathway developmental algebra two course. Pass …
Factors That Shape Arab American College Student Identity, Abdul Rahman F. Jaradat
Factors That Shape Arab American College Student Identity, Abdul Rahman F. Jaradat
Doctoral Dissertations
Arab American identity has not yet received the research attention and scholarship that it deserves. In this dissertation, I have qualitatively studied the narratives of young Arab American college students and recent graduates. The research questions that I explored include what makes them Arab Americans, and what are the factors that help them identify as such. By focusing on Arab Americans and their identity factors, I have presented the narratives of those women and men who self-identify as Arab American and quoted their accounts of how they navigate this undervalued, misunderstood, and stereotyped identity. I have used ethnic and racial …
Moving From Trauma To Healing: Black Queer Cultural Workers’ Experiences And Discourses Of Love, Durryle N. Brooks
Moving From Trauma To Healing: Black Queer Cultural Workers’ Experiences And Discourses Of Love, Durryle N. Brooks
Doctoral Dissertations
Within the US context, there is a considerable misunderstanding of what love is. Normative discourse on love within our society is almost exclusively relegated to romance, familial relations, and or sexual connections. However, many scholars (Fromm, 1956, 1976; hooks, 2000, 2001; Tillich, 1952, 1954) have explored love within a critical theoretical construction, which has linked contemporary discourse on love to power, privilege, and oppression. In that sense, normative discourses on love are not innocuous but instead are hegemonic and serve as an ideology to perpetuate individualism and oppression.
This qualitative study explores the impact of normative discourses of love at …
Cultivating Communities Of Practice To Develop Local Preparedness For Climate Change, Konda Reddy Chavva
Cultivating Communities Of Practice To Develop Local Preparedness For Climate Change, Konda Reddy Chavva
Doctoral Dissertations
The goal of this research was to study the effectiveness of field facilitators’ (FFs) community of practice in improving ways in which FFs and farmers communicate and work together to strengthen farmers’ climate change preparedness through identifying locally suitable adaptation strategies in drought-prone districts of Andhra Pradesh State in India. In development initiatives like the one studied, FFs are often the key liaison person with each community—farmers in this case. FFs interact regularly with farmers, with whom they establish and sustain critical relationships over time. Further, they take the lead in building farmers’ capacities by contextualizing technical information that professionals …
Teachers’ Experiences Of Professional Development In (Post)Crisis Katanga Province, Southeastern Democratic Republic Of Congo: A Case Study Of Teacher Learning Circles, Paul St J Frisoli
Teachers’ Experiences Of Professional Development In (Post)Crisis Katanga Province, Southeastern Democratic Republic Of Congo: A Case Study Of Teacher Learning Circles, Paul St J Frisoli
Doctoral Dissertations
Teachers in (post)crisis contexts face an array of de-motivating factors such as insecurity, lack of pay, difficult working conditions, minimal leadership, and feeling undervalued (Johnson, 2006; OECD, 2009; Shriberg, 2007). To bolster their motivation and support their teaching, teachers in these settings need a forum where they feel valued as professionals (Asimeng-Boahene, 2003; Bennel & Akyeampong; Kirk & Winthrop, 2007). One model of teacher professional development (TPD) known as "Teacher Learning Circles"(TLCs) is currently being implemented in Katanga province in southeastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) for early grade reading teachers. TLCs strive to help teachers adopt innovative teaching techniques …
Atlas Program Profile Analysis Framework Data From: Adult Transitions Longitudinal Study, Laura Gluck
Atlas Program Profile Analysis Framework Data From: Adult Transitions Longitudinal Study, Laura Gluck
Master's Capstone Projects
This paper explores the theoretical basis and past research exploring what helps adults to learn effectively in the Adult Basic Education (ABE) setting. Information on eleven ABE-to-college transition programs was compiled through the Adult Transitions Longitudinal Study (ATLAS) data collection. Statistical analyses of the resulting program-level variables were conducted to examine their effect on transition course participants’ college outcomes. Four of the twelve variables analyzed were found to significantly impact the likelihood of participants enrolling in college and successfully earning at least three credits: 1) whether the program uses grades versus pass/fail marks; 2) whether the program has a documented …

Students’ Dropout In Continuing Education: A Namibian Case Study, Vekaama Heroldt Murangi
Master's Capstone Projects
This study was undertaken in Namibia, to determine causes for student dropouts m continuing education face-to-face centers. The utilized sample in the study consisted of one hundred and seventy learners (including both current & non-continuing learners), and sixty tutors. In this context, dropout refers to those students enrolling for a course (Grade 10, Standard 10) at face-to-face centers and discontinuing their studies before completing the entire course. It is required from all learners to attend classes regularly before they can sit for the final external examination taking place annually in October or November.
Chapter 1 of the study gives a …
Community Learning Groups: A Method In Adult Literacy For Community Participation And Learning, Sirkka Kapango Hamutenya
Community Learning Groups: A Method In Adult Literacy For Community Participation And Learning, Sirkka Kapango Hamutenya
Master's Capstone Projects
The study was done in the context of the Namibia National Literacy Program and was influenced by my working environment. While studying adult education, and by being exposed to a variety of philosophical views and ideas, I tried to reflect those views and ideas to the adult learner groups who graduated from the Namibia National Literacy Program as well as to those in the communities not attending any classes. The questions I had in my mind were the following: What can they do together to learn? How can they utilize their new skills to get involved in participatory community development. …
