The Importance Of Teaching Social-Emotional Skills To Young Children, Stephanie Valdez Dec 2023

The Importance Of Teaching Social-Emotional Skills To Young Children, Stephanie Valdez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

My capstone project enhances the social-emotional skills of preschool children, which are fundamental for relationships, emotional management, and empathy. Children lacking these skills may struggle in learning, behavior, and socializing when they progress to elementary school. Studies have shown that social-emotional competence and cognitive competence are critical predictors of academic accomplishment (Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) and Student Benefits: Implications for the Safe Schools/Healthy Students Core Elements, n.d.). Children in preschool who lack these skills may experience difficulties in learning, behavior, and socializing as they progress to elementary school (Amy Morin, 2019). A significant issue arises when children encounter obstacles …

Increasing Science Curriculum In Preschool, Sandra Rogel May 2023

Increasing Science Curriculum In Preschool, Sandra Rogel

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Early preschool curriculum often needs more attention to science. When the science curriculum is missing from the preschool curriculum, children may not recognize early science concepts, develop little interest in scientific concepts, and lack sufficient skills for kindergarten readiness. When preschool children are exposed to a science curriculum, they begin to apply scientific concepts, acquire scientific language, and develop scientific thinking. Therefore, to address the insufficiency of science in the preschool curriculum, I developed a three-day lesson for 3 to 5-year-olds at MCOE Early Learning Program at Creekside in Salinas, California.

Promoting Emotional Development Skills In Preschool Children., Carolina Cordova May 2022

Promoting Emotional Development Skills In Preschool Children., Carolina Cordova

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Some preschool students have not yet developed the skills to regulate their emotions. Without sufficient skills on how to regulate their emotions, their academic progress may be negatively affected, and their ability to thrive in their Kindergarten classroom may be compromised. In order to help them develop the skills to regulate their emotions, I have created a three-day lesson for preschool students at Dual Language Academy of the Monterey Bay in Seaside, California.

Increasing Social-Emotional Development Skills In Preschoolers, Skyler Thao May 2021

Increasing Social-Emotional Development Skills In Preschoolers, Skyler Thao

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Many preschool children have not yet developed skills of emotional regulation, and often, emotional regulation is not being taught in their classrooms. When children struggle with regulating their emotions, they are more likely to be underprepared for Kindergarten, have their long term mental health be affected, and have conflict with their peers. To help address the lack of emotional regulation skills taught in preschool classrooms, I created a two-day lesson for the preschoolers at the Military Monterey Road Child Development Center in Seaside, California.

Increasing Nutrition And Healthy Eating Among Preschoolers, Hanyssa Usi Dec 2020

Increasing Nutrition And Healthy Eating Among Preschoolers, Hanyssa Usi

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

There is little nutritional education in preschools. Children are not being taught about the importance of eating nutritious foods. When children are taught about nutrition, they will create positive eating habits that could make them less susceptible to health complications. To address the lack of nutrition education, I created a three-day lesson about nutrition for preschoolers at Teddy Bear Learning Center in Monterey, California.

Introducing Nutrition Education To Preschoolers, Maythe Manriquez May 2020

Introducing Nutrition Education To Preschoolers, Maythe Manriquez

This paper is about the importance of including nutrition education in preschool curriculum. It includes my process of creating and implementing a 3-day nutrition curriculum and how it impacted the children that took place in the program. This paper also goes over important influences on the development of children's eating habits.

Fostering Social And Emotional Learning In Early Childhood Education, Allison Cawaling May 2020

Fostering Social And Emotional Learning In Early Childhood Education, Allison Cawaling

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In early childhood education centers, children often lack the opportunity to learn about and develop their social and emotional skills. Without strong social and emotional skills, children may demonstrate behavior problems and low academic success later in school. Therefore I have created a three-day lesson on social and emotional learning for preschool aged children at the Cabrillo College Children’s Center in Aptos, California.

Introducing Science Education In Early Childhood, Marissa M. Arciniega May 2020

Introducing Science Education In Early Childhood, Marissa M. Arciniega

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

The increasing focus on literacy development and kindergarten readiness in preschool has created a lack of science education in early childhood education. In recent research, Head Start found that of the four academic readiness domains for preschoolers (i.e., language, literacy, math, and science), science is the lowest-performing area amongst students in their program (Bustamante, White, & Greenfield, 2018). Research is showing that declining performance in science is partly due to the lack of science education in classrooms. Lack of science is not only affecting school performance down the road, but it also limits children in receiving the benefits of early …

Primary Education And The Use Of Technology, Neyfy Fernandez May 2020

Primary Education And The Use Of Technology, Neyfy Fernandez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Modern day technology has seeped into homes at an alarming rate in the past decade. Children now have access to computer programs, applications, social media and educational programs all at their reach. The classroom isn’t immune to this scenario. This senior capstone project explored whether technology is beneficial in the classroom for primary children. Literature reviews and teacher questionnaires from four Gonzales Unified School District teachers were used to answer the question. The results found that social and emotional development was the most vital aspect in the preschool level and when technology was used in the classroom strict screen time …

Inclusion And Racial Diversity Curriculum In Preschools, Vanessa Sanchez May 2019

Inclusion And Racial Diversity Curriculum In Preschools, Vanessa Sanchez

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Preschool aged children begin to observe the things that makes individuals different in the world around them. Teachers have the opportunity to teach children the importance of recognizing the differences and accepting towards others who are racially different. Lessons around racial diversity will help children extend their knowledge about others and help develop positive attitudes towards racial diversity . To address the need for preschool aged children to learn about diversity in a positive way, I created a 3 day lesson plan about racial diversity executed at CSUMB child care center.

Fostering Social-Emotional Competence In Preschoolers, Celina Waddy May 2019

Fostering Social-Emotional Competence In Preschoolers, Celina Waddy

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

In order to form and maintain healthy relationships with peers and adults, preschool-age children must develop the skills needed to manage and express their emotions appropriately. Without these social-emotional competence skills, young children’s success in current and future relationships may be hindered. In order to address preschoolers’ social-emotional competence, I created a 3-day lesson plan, which covers emotion identification, expression, and regulation, and delivered it to a group of preschoolers at the Hartnell Community College Child Development Center in Salinas, California.

Disability Awareness In Young Children, Guadalupe Y. Espinoza May 2019

Disability Awareness In Young Children, Guadalupe Y. Espinoza

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Young children who attend schools nowadays are likely exposed to many more types of diversity ranging from race, ethnicity, religion, and social class to name a few in comparison to the past. One area of diversity in specific is the inclusion of individuals with disabilities, and because children are so young in age, they may not be aware of disabilities or even identify when a peer or a surrounding adult has a disability. In schools the idea of raising disability awareness to an extent where students not only understand but recognize disabilities, perhaps, is one of the most challenging aspects …

Teaching Gender Diversity In Preschool Classrooms, Nicole Marie Valhuerdi May 2018

Teaching Gender Diversity In Preschool Classrooms, Nicole Marie Valhuerdi

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

As early as toddler years, children are absorbing information about gender stereotypes on what they should and should not be doing based solely off their sex and “have typically come to prefer activities defined by the culture as appropriate for their sex” (Wolter & Hannover, 2016, p.683). I thought it was important to start coming up with age appropriate ways to explain the concept of gender to children and teach preschool children about acceptance of differences in one another as well as themselves. For my project, I created a two-day lesson plan that was meant to be an introduction on …
