An Investigation Of Prekindergarten Teachers’ Read Aloud Choices, Rebecca M. Giles, Karen Morrison May 2023

An Investigation Of Prekindergarten Teachers’ Read Aloud Choices, Rebecca M. Giles, Karen Morrison

Literacy Practice and Research

The value of children’s literature as a tool for promoting literacy, improving content knowledge, and increasing print motivation is evident. Empirical evidence relating to the types of books early childhood teachers read aloud and the reasons for their choices, however, does not exist. The purpose of this descriptive study was to provide current, in-depth documentation of the read-aloud book choices of prekindergarten teachers (n=151) in a nationally recognized, state-wide program regarding the variables of genre, publication date, and diversity along with the teachers’ rationale for selecting the books. Responses to two open-ended questions inspired by Yopp and Yopp (2006) were …

Benefits Of Supplemental Field Experiences: Reviewing Five Years Of Program Data, Megan Adams, Sanjuana C. Rodriguez

Literacy Practice and Research

This study includes five years of data from a summer literacy program. The program provides a supplemental field experience for teacher candidates in a College of Education. In that experience, candidates work with children from economically marginalized populations who are performing below grade level in reading. Findings indicate supplemental field experiences are critical in developing efficacy in the candidates and supporting their development as they become professionals with varied literacy teaching strategies. Finally, the findings indicate teacher candidates need supplemental field experiences to understand the demands of the profession and to build teaching stamina.

The Path To Self-Authorship: The Pre-Service Teacher-Writer, Shari L. Daniels Dr., Pamela Beck Aug 2022

The Path To Self-Authorship: The Pre-Service Teacher-Writer, Shari L. Daniels Dr., Pamela Beck

Literacy Practice and Research

This literature review examined the relationship between the development of a teacher who writes (teacher-writer) and the phases of self-authorship, “the internal capacity to define one's beliefs, identity and social relations” (Baxter Magolda, 2001, p. 269). The narratives of three teacher-writer-authors show a correlation to Magolda’s self-authorship phases. The purpose of this examination was to explore the question: How might a writing support teachers in personally and professionally? Research suggests new teachers are unprepared for today’s classrooms. Could this unpreparedness may be related to a lack of self-authorship? Might a consistent writing practice propel teachers through the phases of self-authorship …

A Culturally Sustaining Book Club: The Examination Of African American Students' Motivation And Literacy Achievement, Brittney C. Jones

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Culturally sustaining pedagogy includes centering students’ cultural identities, languages, and practices in the classroom. Such practices have had positive effects on the reading achievement and motivation of African American students. In particular, communalism and interdependence are cultural themes that are preferred by African American students and parents. Book clubs are a long-standing literacy activity that centers student voices and social interactions as the basis of student learning.

This mixed-methods intervention study was conducted to determine the effects of a culturally sustaining book club on second and third-grade African American students’ motivation and reading achievement at a Title I school as …

This study aims to examine why students drop out during their first year of study. The model utilized in this research integrates variables derived from Vincent Tito’s theory of departure, in addition to other variables not included in this theory like the parental support impact on extracurricular activities. Correlations analyses were used to assess the …

Playing With Print? An Investigation Of Literacy Indicators In Children’S Museums, Rebecca M. Giles Apr 2021

Playing With Print? An Investigation Of Literacy Indicators In Children’S Museums, Rebecca M. Giles

Literacy Practice and Research

The purpose of this study was to evaluate literacy indicators in ten members of the Association of Children's Museums in eight states. The Museum Inventory of Literacy Indicators was used to assess factors across four areas -- Books and Other Reading Materials; Writing Materials; Signs, Labels, and Directions; and Print Integration – with 20 as the highest possible average. Area averages for quality (6.00 - 15.99) and quantity (6.00 - 15.74) were similar. Most museums concentrated their literacy efforts in a single area rather than considering the potential for facilitating literacy acquisition comprehensively, which could provide improved educational encounters for …

ICOT 18 - International Conference on Thinking - Cultivating Mindsets for Global Citizens

Playful Thinking In Action: Tools For Cultivating Children's Thinking, Carol Mcguinness May 2018

Playful Thinking In Action: Tools For Cultivating Children's Thinking, Carol Mcguinness

ICOT 18 - International Conference on Thinking - Cultivating Mindsets for Global Citizens

The importance of play for children’s development is widely recognised. Nevertheless, the quality of play in early years classrooms can be problematic, often lacking in richness, challenge and adventure, with teachers not being clear what their role in play should be – if any.

This interactive workshop will explore a set of ‘tools’ that focuses on how early years teachers can advance” thinking challenges” through play while at the same time maintaining children’s interest and curiosity. Practical examples of these tools, e.g., using thinking vocabulary, engaging in dialogic exchanges, and using thinking organisers playfully, will be illustrated, and their theoretical …

ICOT 18 - International Conference on Thinking - Cultivating Mindsets for Global Citizens

From Head to Head or Heads Together? offers an interactive workshop sharing effective evidence-based pedagogical approaches to Information Literacy (IL) in the early years, particularly in redressing disadvantage. IL skills are 21st Century skills needed by children and families to ensure inequities are challenged. Being able to find, evaluate and apply information for personal benefit is a key attribute in today's knowledge economy. IL goes beyond developing functional skills to creating attributes that enable lifelong learning. However, simply having access to digital technologies and online resources does not always equate to developing these attributes.

The 2015 Australian Early Development …

Using Critical Literacy In Early Childhood, Paula Renata Castillo, Paola Nascira Ramia

ICOT 18 - International Conference on Thinking - Cultivating Mindsets for Global Citizens

The objective of this workshop is to guide participants to reflect about how their beliefs related to social justice and critical literacy influence their actual teaching practices as early childhood educators. The second purpose is to support participants with the creation of a plan to include critical literacy as part of their teaching practices in their classrooms. An essential goal of early childhood education should be to support young children to become aware of inequalities in society and to question the stereotypes that they have been exposed to while growing up. These goals can be reached by using children´s literature …

We’Ve Come A Long Way (Baby)! Or Have We? Evolving Intellectual Freedom Issues In The Us And Florida, L. Bryan Cooper, A.D. Beman-Cavallaro

Works of the FIU Libraries

This paper analyzes a shifting landscape of intellectual freedom (IF) in and outside Florida for children, adolescents, teens and adults. National ideals stand in tension with local and state developments, as new threats are visible in historical, legal, and technological context. Examples include doctrinal shifts, legislative bills, electronic surveillance and recent attempts to censor books, classroom texts, and reading lists.

Privacy rights for minors in Florida are increasingly unstable. New assertions of parental rights are part of a larger conservative animus. Proponents of IF can identify a lessening of ideals and standards that began after doctrinal fruition in the 1960s …

The Role Of Language In Early Childhood Mathematics, Raquel Munarriz Diaz Jan 2008

The Role Of Language In Early Childhood Mathematics, Raquel Munarriz Diaz

FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Math literacy is imperative to succeed in society. Experience is key for acquiring math literacy. A preschooler’s world is full of mathematical experiences. Children are continually counting, sorting and comparing as they play. As children are engaged in these activities they are using language as a tool to express their mathematical thinking. If teachers are aware of these teachable moments and help children bridge their daily experiences to mathematical concepts, math literacy may be enhanced.

This study described the interactions between teachers and preschoolers, determining the extent to which teachers scaffold children’s everyday language into expressions of mathematical concepts. Of …
