Preschool Number Of The Day, Christine Shepard

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This action research project was completed by a researcher was interested in the preschool math curriculum. More specifically, in the numbers and how their relationships including one to one counting and producing the amount when given a number in preschool. This researcher has taught preschool for 7 years. The students were able to participate in the study. One class of students did not receive the number of the day lessons, while the other students received the lessons throughout the entire school year. The study was part of our learning standards aligning to the Iowa Early Learning Standards and Gold Teaching …

Early Childhood Math Strategies, Nicole Merchant Apr 2022

Early Childhood Math Strategies, Nicole Merchant

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This action research was led by the researcher’s interest in improving early learners’ academic mathematics achievement, specifically in oral counting, number identification, and counting 1:1 correspondence up to twenty, for targeted students. The researcher is in her 14th year of teaching, but 3rd year as an Early Childhood Special Education teacher, where her own students participated in a trial group intervention study. The four-week intervention was performed where students engaged in mathematics practice with implementation of five instructional practices and providing interactive engaging math games that specifically focused on skills including oral counting, number identification, and 1:1 correspondence. Throughout the …

Using The Ipad Application Ixl And Its Effects On Fast Assessment Scores, Carly Lenhoff Jul 2021

Using The Ipad Application Ixl And Its Effects On Fast Assessment Scores, Carly Lenhoff

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The purpose of this action research study was to determine the effectiveness of using the iPad application IXL during math rotations in the transitional kindergarten classroom and the outcomes of the FAST assessment composite scores. The researcher conducted the study over eight weeks in a transitional kindergarten in Northwest Iowa. Nine students participated eight-ten minutes two-three times a week. The researcher collected quantitative data through the IXL program along with FAST test scores. Results suggest that the use of IXL program advances transitional kindergarten FAST composite scores.

The Importance Of Using Manipulatives In Math Class, Jennifer Lange Apr 2021

The Importance Of Using Manipulatives In Math Class, Jennifer Lange

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review synthesizes research on how the use of manipulatives in math class benefit the learner. The problem is that the students are not always given the opportunity to explore and learn through the use of math manipulatives in order to gain a strong foundation and understanding of mathematical concepts. The purpose of this literature review is to explore the benefits of using manipulatives in the classroom and the impact it has on student achievement levels. The literature review is made up of research studies published within the last 10 years and explores the different types of manipulatives, levels …

The Importance Of Teaching And Learning Patterning In Early Math Education, Jan M. Hessman Oct 2020

The Importance Of Teaching And Learning Patterning In Early Math Education, Jan M. Hessman

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

This literature review explores the importance of patterning in early math education. Patterning skills are a unique predictor of future success in mathematics. With the Common Core not addressing patterning as a standard in early math education, many educators have come to believe that the importance of patterning is not significant. However, past and present research studies have yielded convincing results that demonstrate the importance of including patterning in early math curriculums. Incorporating patterning into young students' math experiences requires several specific instructional strategies to optimize the benefits of learning patterning skills.

Effectiveness Of Number Sense Instruction And Memorization Of Math Facts, Katie Barnes Jul 2020

Effectiveness Of Number Sense Instruction And Memorization Of Math Facts, Katie Barnes

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Math instruction is taught using a variety of methods and strategies. This literature review compares two strategies of math instruction: the instruction of number sense versus the process of memorizing math facts for students. The literature review identifies various math strategies for both number sense instruction and memorization of math facts. This literature review synthesizes studies published in scholarly journals on the topics of number sense, memorizing math facts, timed tests, math anxiety, and teacher perspectives. Studies from this review reveal that number sense instruction is beneficial for student learning to build the foundation for future mathematical knowledge before the …

Guided Math: Best Practice For The General Education Classrooms, Kaylee Cloyed

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

Flexible small grouping and Guided Math is becoming widely used in elementary mathematics instruction around the world. However, there are some different viewpoints on whether or not this is the most effective math instruction for students and teachers. Research proves that being successful in math is important in order for students to be successful later in life at their careers. Since mathematics is so important for a successful life, many teachers and researchers are studying new intervention strategies to help students be successful in math. This literature review will contain peer reviewed, scholarly journals researching the history of education, math …

Spatial-Temporal Math And Its Effect On Student Achievement, Nicole Dillnger Oct 2017

Spatial-Temporal Math And Its Effect On Student Achievement, Nicole Dillnger

Master's Theses & Capstone Projects

The purpose behind this action research was to determine the effect Spatial-Temporal (ST) Math, a web-based mathematics program, has on student achievement at a second grade level. The ST Math program was given to a small group of second grade students on top of the classroom mathematics curriculum while another group of students strictly used the classroom mathematics curriculum. A pre and post assessment were given to these students over an eight week period. This quantitative data was analyzed to determine the correlation between the students’ exposer to ST Math and their achievement on the assessments. After analyzing the data, …
