Refugee Children And Resettlement In The United States, Rachel Kerber
Child Development Theses
The number of displaced people worldwide has dramatically increased in the last few years, so it is imperative that we study how their experiences affect refugees in the long-term. With a particular focus on children, I reviewed the literature to learn about the stressors that refugees often face during displacement, migration, and resettlement in a new country, and the impact that these stressors may have on their mental health. I investigated how psychosocial support services and certain best practices can ease the refugee family’s transition to a new country upon resettlement. In addition, I interned at HIAS, a resettlement agency, …

Lessons In Bioecological Research Design From Flint, Mi: Get To Know The Participants!, Khushboo Shah
Child Development Theses
The historic events of the Flint Water Crisis (FWC) have led to a variety of intertwined mental and physical health, developmental and sociological outcomes in Flint, MI. Urie Bronfenbrenner’s Bioecological Model of Human Development provides a suitable model for considering the full complexity of these factors. This model allows researchers to conceptualize within complex systems the nuanced sites and relationships in which development occurs. However, designing research based on this model is widely considered to be excessively challenging. This thesis outlines the process of designing Bioecological research in Flint, MI and presents examples from a pilot study which suggest that …

Re-Patterning Attachments At School And Beyond: An Exploration Of The Healing Power Of Relationships And School Community, Sophia Sherman
Child Development Theses
This thesis will explore ways that a child’s educational experience can repattern a child’s disrupted attachment with a caregiver. By using school as the framework for which attachment theory is examined, I will present research on school based behavioral health and intervention models. By integrating research on attachment theory, social emotional learning, resilience, strategies for strong school climate, and the role of school based behavioral health, the thesis will explore the ways in which to better support children who are struggling to succeed within their school environment. A specific case example will be presented in order to illustrate these important …
The Impact Of Childhood Chronic Illness On Mental Health: A Review Of Parent And Child Reports Of Stress And Maladaptive Behaviors In A Longitudinal Study, Caroline Raak
Child Development Theses
An estimated 16 million children live with at least one chronic medical condition in the United States. These children and their parents must contend with a variety of challenges that affect their everyday lives, as well as their future and potential outcomes. This study analyzed the relationship between having a child with a chronic medical condition and the mental health/well-being of both the child and the primary caregiver using data from the Bellevue Project for Early Language, Literacy, and Education Success (BELLE). Parent and child reports of children’s socioemotional function, and parent’s feelings of stress and depression were used as …
Autism And Language: A Case Study Of An Adolescent, Isabel Barata Adler
Autism And Language: A Case Study Of An Adolescent, Isabel Barata Adler
Child Development Theses
The present work aims to offer a different perspective on the use of language in autism, dissociating it from a defective and pathological view. The first part of this paper will present a literature review, from the first description of autism to the most recent psychiatric definition of Autism Spectrum Disorder. Both DIRFloortime® and a Lacanian psychoanalytic understanding of language in autism will be provided. In order to revisit theoretical paradigms and to investigate how an individual diagnosed with autism makes use of language, the second part will include a case study of weekly meetings with a young autistic man …
