The Adoption Of The Monarch Room As An Alternative To Suspension And Expulsion In Addressing School Discipline Issues Among Court-Involved Youth, Angelique G. Day Jan 2016

The Adoption Of The Monarch Room As An Alternative To Suspension And Expulsion In Addressing School Discipline Issues Among Court-Involved Youth, Angelique G. Day

Angelique G Day

Suspension/expulsion is commonly used in schools, yet these practices can adversely affect students’ education well-being and do not improve student behavior. This study assesses the impact of the Monarch Room (MR) intervention, a trauma-informed alternative to school discipline suspension/expulsion policies, among a sample of 719 court-involved girls placed in residential care and enrolled in a public, chartered strict discipline academy over a three year period. MR use significantly decreased reliance on suspension/expulsion in addressing problematic behavior. School mobility and race were significant predictors of MR use, while school absences were not. Implications for policy and practice are also offered.

Evaluation Of A Trauma-Informed Teaching Intervention On The Educational Well-Being Of Youth In Residential Care, Angelique G. Day

Angelique G Day

In response to the high nationwide prevalence of psychological trauma among court-involved youth who have been exposed to abuse and neglect and the associated far-reaching adverse consequences, there are calls to develop a trauma-informed workforce across the various systems (child welfare, juvenile justice, mental health and education) designed to serve these traumatized young persons. We describe a pilot test of a modified version of the Heart of Teaching and Learning (HTL) curriculum, an intervention designed to increase trauma-informed practices in education settings. This program was implemented in a public charter school that exclusively serves court-involved youth placed in residential treatment. …

Inclusive Leadership And Gender, Margaret Grogan, Shamini Dias Jan 2015

Inclusive Leadership And Gender, Margaret Grogan, Shamini Dias

Margaret Grogan

A review of relevant recent research indicates that girls’ issues are generally off the radar screen in local pre-K-12 schools in the United States. This is particularly problematic because gender inequities continue to be perpetuated in schools through largely unconscious cultural mores and pedagogies. Gender inequities are deeply rooted in historical, philosophical, and cultural narratives of gender so that we, educators, are ourselves articulations of gender-based narratives. Moreover, the intersectionalities between gender, race, English speaking ability, sexuality, class, religion, ability, poverty etc. greatly exacerbate this problem. Together with their teachers, principals must develop critical self-awareness as well as intentional ways …

Auditory Processing Learning Disability, Suicidal Ideation, And Transformational Faith, Frank S. Bailey, Russell G. Yocum

Russell Yocum

The purpose of this personal experience as a narrative investigation is to describe how an auditory processing learning disability exacerbated—and how spirituality and religiosity relieved—suicidal ideation, through the lived experiences of an individual born and raised in the United States. The study addresses: (a) how an auditory processing learning disability affected the primary participant’s view of life as a child, adolescent, and young adult, (b) how religiosity and spirituality helped to reframe that outlook after a near-fatal suicide attempt, and (c) how spirituality and religiosity serve to moderate the primary participant’s current view of life. Data were obtained from interviews, …

Using Positive Behavior Intervention Support For Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder In Inclusion, Marquis C. Grant, Sharita W. Crossen

Marquis Grant

Children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD)often demonstrate behaviors that can impact their academic performance in the classroom. The use of a behavior support system may decrease the occurrence of problematic behaviors while increasing desired behaviors that will allow students with ASD to be successful in school. Positive Behavior Intervention Support (PBIS) is grounded in the theory of behavior support using incentives to motivate desired behaviors while inadvertently modifying challenging behaviors.

Marginalization Of Published Scholarship On Students With Disabilities, Edlyn V. Peña Jan 2014

Marginalization Of Published Scholarship On Students With Disabilities, Edlyn V. Peña

Edlyn V. Peña

While numbers of students with disabilities continue to rise in postsecondary education, little is known about the extent to which the scholarship on this student population has kept pace. A critical content analysis was conducted to review articles on students with disabilities published in top-tier journals of higher education between 1990 and 2010. Topical and methodological trends and limitations were examined, revealing that the depth and breadth of research on students with disabilities is vastly limited in mainstream journals of higher education. Recommendations are made for future research to fill gaps in methodology and topic areas.

Using Balanced Literacy For Delivering Culturally Relevant Pedagogy To Prepare Teachers: A 20-Year Perspective On Dreamkeepers, Nicholas Daniel Hartlep, Tatiana D. Joseph

Nicholas Daniel Hartlep, Ph.D.

The purpose of this article is to highlight the teaching practices of two teacher educators who teach at universities in the Midwest. The authors detail the myriad ways in which they use a balanced literacy approach that is culturally relevant in their courses at Illinois State University (Normal, IL) and the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (Milwaukee, WI), to more effectively prepare PK-12 urban educators. The authors point to the demographic imperative, as shifting demographics continue, the need for highly effective teachers who can teach our nation’s culturally and linguistically diverse PK-12 students becomes ever more critical.

The Verdict And Response, Edward Earl Bell Jul 2013

The Verdict And Response, Edward Earl Bell

Edward Earl Bell

The murdering of black boys is not foreign. Prior to Zimmerman, black boys were murdered in streets from coast to coast. “We” were somewhat silent calling for a global ending of these deaths. The Zimmerman verdict seems to have produced clamor not only in the black community but also in communities across the globe.

Ict Project For Children With Autism In Ghana, Emmanuel Dzadeyson Mr

Emmanuel Dzadeyson

Mental illness is the leading cause of disability in the world, according to the World Health Organization. Even more troubling: Four out of five people with psychiatric disorders live in developing countries, where they have few opportunities for treatment. That's certainly the case for autism in Africa, though, like in other resource-poor areas of the world, awareness is beginning to improve. In the past few years, a handful of researchers in various African countries have investigated children with autism. . A new review of these reports finds that these children tend to be diagnosed much later than their counterparts in …

Disabled Students' Rights Of Access To Charter Schools Under The Idea, Section 504 And The Ada, Robert A. Garda Jr.

Robert A. Garda

Charter schools are under increasing attack for denying admission to disabled students. But traditional schools also turn away disabled students, often preventing them from attending schools in their neighborhood or within their district. This Article discusses when a school is permitted under federal disability law to deny admission to a disabled student. After nearly four decades of special education jurisprudence and regulatory guidance, the circumstances under which a student with a disability may be denied admission to a particular school are still remarkably unclear. This Article first discusses the "zero-reject" principle underlying the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act and concludes …

Truly, they ave eaten their words in the following months and confessed the partial effects on the Sudanese economy. Moreover, after they …

Professor Issam A.W. Mohamed

This is the first part of a book I started writing in the year 2008 under the title of Sad Triology: The Crisis of a Nation. I name this chapter the Delirium as it represents the political response to what happens in the country due to the international outrage and pressures to Darfur Crisis. This part is narrating pressures on Sudan's Inqaz regime, specially after the Darfur region crisis and civil wars, the rage of the international society and responses, the impacts of the International Instututions including the ICC and the hunt for justice. All those qualitative variables had responses …
