The purpose of this mixed methodological study was to explore factors that impact English Language Learners’ (ELLs) reading comprehension in middle school and strategies for improvement. The independent variables were Oral Language Skills, Reading Motivation, Cultural Relevant Pedagogy, Teacher Instructional Strategies, Students’ Self-Efficacy in the use of English, Academic Peer Support, and Student Socialization/Involvement; the dependent variable was Reading Comprehension. This study took place at one private school outside the Atlanta Metropolitan area in which 99% of the population are ELLs. The participants included 60 students and 3 teachers of different content backgrounds.

The purpose of this transcendental phenomenological study was to explore effective instructional strategies of mainstream classroom teachers working with English Language Learners (ELLs). Many teachers feel unprepared to adequately educate English Language Learners. The ELL population in the United States continues to increase. Research suggests that the English language proficiency growth rates for numerous ELL students are strongly correlated with their English language proficiency levels (Cook & Zhao, 2011; Conger, 2008). The results of Conger’s 2008 study suggested that just over fifty percent of students gained English language proficiency after three years. According to the same study, the students that did not typically gain English language proficiency were students who entered public schools older and with a lower English language proficiency level. This multiple case study results from an ethnographic immersion in a local public high school, focusing on English language learners (ELLs) in content area classrooms. The primary goals were to 1) explore the language and literacy practices of ELLs within this setting, 2) gain an understanding of the complexity and multiplicity of the learners' schooling experiences, and 3) discuss implications pertaining to practice and research.
