Despite intuitive and theoretically motivated claims that Study Abroad (SA) is an optimal environment for language development, including pronunciation gains, research on its effectiveness has produced contradictory results. Furthermore, there is little known about short-term study abroad programs, where matriculation numbers are increasing faster than ever before. This chapter analyzes pre- and post-SA oral production data from 18 advanced learners of Spanish, focusing on stop consonants (/p, t, k, b, d, g/). The underrepresentation of Black men in engineering highlights a missing segment of the population who could contribute to the knowledge economy.1 An increase in Black men in engineering could lead to an increase in Black faculty members - and in general, role models - who cold teach and inspire future generations of students in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). To address this national concern, stakeholders must first identify prevailing issues such as racial microaggressions, which threaten the long-term participation of Black men in science and engineering.

Effects Of Strength Of Accent On An L2 Interactive Lecture Listening Comprehension Test, Gary Ockey, Spiros Papageorgiou, Robert French

This article reports on a study which aimed to determine the effect of strength of accent on listening comprehension of interactive lectures. Test takers (N = 21,726) listened to an interactive lecture given by one of nine speakers and responded to six comprehension items. The test taker responses were analyzed with the Rasch computer program WINSTEPS to investigate the relative difficulty of the items associated with the nine versions of the interactive lectures. Results indicated that comprehension of interactive lectures was diminished with quite light accents, as has been found with monologic lectures.

Students’ lives outside of college can have dramatic effects on academic outcomes (e.g., grades, persistence, graduation). However, the manner in which students’ lives outside of college are referenced in college-effects models suggests some uncertainty among scholars as to which, and how, student experiences outside of an institution affect college student outcomes. Using longitudinal data from a racially diverse sample of 3914 students (997 White, 1051 Black, 915 Hispanic, and 951 Asian) attending 28 institutions, this study employs logistic regression models to examine relationships between three types of non-college life-events and students’ likelihood of graduation. An increasing number of studies on the use of tools for automated writing evaluation (AWE) in writing classrooms suggest growing interest in their potential for formative assessment. Teacher Development Programs (TDPs) in Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) aim to develop teachers' knowledge as well as positive attitudes toward technology. Previous studies (Liu & Kelinsasser, 2015; Tai, 2015, 2013; Rienities, Brouwer, & Lygo-Baker, 2013; Wong & Benson, 2006; Chao, 2006; Hegelheimer, 2006; Yildirim, 2000) show that teachers develop their CALL technical pedagogical knowledge through participation in CALL TDPs. The rating of oral responses was implemented through an innovative computer technology—a web-based rating system called Rater-Platform (R-Plat). Using literature in the language classroom through Content-Based Language Teaching (Mohan, 1971) offers a methods-based framework, but still lacks a linguistic backing to support its use in the EFL or ESL classroom. Multiple-choice formats remain a popular design for assessing listening comprehension, yet no consensus has been reached on how multiple-choice formats should be employed. This dissertation project developed and evaluated a computer-assisted language learning (CALL) tool, PAT GRAM, that provides explicit instruction on grammar patterns. Evaluation of the explicit instruction offered by PAT GRAM adopted Chapelle’s (2001) framework of criteria for CALL task appropriateness. Following this framework, evidence was collected to investigate language learning potential, learner fit, meaning focus, and impact qualities of the explicit instruction realized through PAT GRAM.

This paper explores how student affairs practitioners may engage in critical cultural praxis through participatory action research (PAR). As authors, both researchers and practitioners, we partnered with one another to conduct a needs assessment of Asian American students through PAR methods at a university in the northeast United States. Spoken language has no spaces between its words. Therefore, one of the major tasks facing listeners of any language is determining from the largely continuous stream of speech where the invisible word boundaries lie. Although English is not a language where the position of a word's stressed syllable is reliably fixed, its lexical stress is nevertheless fixed enough that L1 English listeners initially apply the heuristic that strong syllables mark the first syllable of a new word, attempting alternative resegmentations only when this heuristic fails to identify a viable word string (Cutler & Butterfield, 1992; Cutler & Carter, 1987). Thus, English word stress errors can severely disrupt listener processing.
