Individuals who have one or more deaf parent can be considered heritage learners of a signed language (Compton, 2014; Valdes, 2005). These individuals have had language brokering experiences (Napier, in press) before entering a formal program or attending any training to become an interpreter. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of parents’ four-types of child-rearing attitudes (i.e., acceptance, rejection, autonomy, control) on Korean high school student's English-learning motivation and their English achievement. A total of 250 high school students participated in this survey study. The results indicated that father’s child-rearing attitudes made significant differences in high school students’ four types of English-learning motivation (i.e., intrinsic motivation, extrinsic motivation, ideal L2 selves, and ought-to L2 selves). The purpose of this study was to determine the long-term impact of the Summer Workshop for English Teachers. Moving beyond participant satisfaction surveys and even measures of participant learning outcomes, this project sought to describe the ways that teachers implemented their program training after returning to Mexico and what affect that had in their classrooms, their schools, and the wider English-teaching community. This study explores motivational and demotivational factors in English learning among elderly learners attending a lifelong education institute located in Seoul, South Korea. A total of 420 elderly learners with limited English learning experience responded to a questionnaire with 47 five-point Likert-type items. In order to investigate what factors encourage and discourage elderly learners in their participation in English learning, we conducted factor analysis, which indicated five motivational and three demotivational constructs. The motivational factor of self-actualization proved the most influential, while pressure from the Graduation Equivalency Examination was the most demotivating. In South Korea, Damunwha students (students from multicultural family backgrounds) have difficulties at school because of others’ derogatory perception of them and the different linguistic and cultural settings. In light of this issue, this paper addresses the Damunwha students’ identities and participation within the language communities from a community of practice perspective and a critical pedagogy perspective. This paper evaluates whether students’ perceptions of Appalachian English improve through a method of instruction that uses dialect literature in the classroom. Most existing methods of instruction tend to portray dialects as wrong, incorrect, or in some way less rule-governed than Standardized English, despite the numerous studies that have demonstrated otherwise (e.g., Labov 1969, Wolfram 1986). However, such presumed authenticity is taken for granted without empirical justification. Languaging In Cyberspace: A Case Study Of The Effects Of Peer-Peer Collaborative Dialogue On The Acquisition Of English Idioms In Task-Based Synchronous Computer-Mediated Communication, Xuan Teng

Despite the growing interest in examining the link between peer-peer collaborative dialogue and second language (L2) development in recent years (Swain, Brooks, & Tocalli-Beller, 2002), much of the empirical work in this regard focused on face-to-face communication, leaving the operationalization of collaborative dialogue in text-based synchronous computer-mediated communication (SCMC) largely unexplored. In addition, while the bulk of the existing studies concerned L2 learners’ incidental learning of the linguistic structures they had difficulty with during their collaboration on communicative tasks (e.g., Watanabe & Swain, 2007), little is known about the connection between collaborative dialogue and second language acquisition (SLA) when L2 learners are faced with preselected language features that are intended for learning. Furthermore, L2 learners’ perspectives on collaborative dialogue and its contribution to L2 growth were for the most part ignored in the literature. This study seeks to address these gaps through the examination of English as a Second Language (ESL) learners’ collaboration on English idioms that are frequently used in academic discourse. Drawing on sociocultural SLA (Lantolf, 2000; Lantolf & Thorne, 2006) and the concept of “languaging” (Swain, 2006), it explores how episodes of collaborative dialogue are carried out during SCMC-based dyadic interaction, its association with SLA, and L2 learners’ opinions about its effectiveness.

Pronunciation is an important part of language proficiency because of its immediate role in language judgments. Nevertheless, it has often been overlooked and sometimes neglected in favor of grammar and vocabulary in SLA research (Neri, Cucchiarini, Strik, & Boves, 2002).
