Maternal Factors Affecting Academic Achievement Of Latino Adolescents , Marisa Rivera Jan 1997

Maternal Factors Affecting Academic Achievement Of Latino Adolescents , Marisa Rivera

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

Latinos are the fastest growing segment of the population in the United States. Consequently, that growth will have a dramatic effect on this country.. The high number of Latino youth that drop out of school is exceedingly critical in light of the fact that by the turn of the century less than 14 percent of jobs will require less than a high school diploma. There is divergence among researchers as to the cause of the high drop out rates. Some attribute it directly to socioeconomic factors while others argue that those factors should be viewed as distal influences and that ...

Preparing Esl Undergraduates For Freshman Composition Through Cooperative Learning, Collaborative Writing, And Portfolio Grading: A Course Design Rationale And Case Study, Roberta E. Golliher

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This thesis describes and examines an experimental ESL composition course that featured cooperative learning and collaborative writing , a course that also involved thematic sequencing of assignments and portfolio grading of students' individual writing. The course was a revised version of Iowa State University's English 101C (Advanced Composition for Non-Native Speakers of English), with the revisions directed toward the attainment of the official course goal of preparing ESL students for the Iowa State First Year Composition Program. The changes in the course enabled 101C students to write assignments modeled on ISU freshman composition assignments--particularly academic and argumentative writing assignments.

Call In The Year 2000: Still In Search Of Research Paradigms?, Carol Chapelle Jan 1997

Call In The Year 2000: Still In Search Of Research Paradigms?, Carol Chapelle

English Publications

Advancements in the design and use of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) activities require that key questions about CALL be identified and effective research methods be used to answer them. In this paper, I suggest looking to research on other types of second language (L2) classroom learning activities for guidance in framing CALL research questions and in discovering relevant research methods. I begin with examples from the CALL literature demonstrating the diverse perspectives (e.g., cognitive psychology, constructivism, psycholinguistics) which have been suggested as ways of approaching CALL research. I then summarize the research questions and methods of L2 classroom research ...

Equity Attitudes Of Public School Stakeholders: A National Study , James Arnold Scott

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study was conducted to document equity attitudes of public school stakeholders (PSS) and compare them to attitudes of Americans in general. Attitudes And Motivation Of Second Language Learners In Kuwait, Basma E. Alshaar Jan 1997

Attitudes And Motivation Of Second Language Learners In Kuwait, Basma E. Alshaar

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

This study examined attitudes and motivation of second language learners in Kuwait. A self-report questionnaire was adapted from Gardner's (1985) Attitude and Motivation Test Battery and translated into Arabic, the participants' first language. Several methods were used in dealing with the data collected: descriptive statistics, correlation, and t-test. Scores on each measure were used as separate variables to examine the relationship between any two variables (nine hypotheses). The findings were consistent with those of the other researchers': there are significant correlations between affective variables (attitudes and motivation) and learning a second language. Also, a significant level of English class ...

What Price Freedom: The Story Of A Vietnamese Political Refugee, Stephaney A. Jones-Vo Jan 1997

What Price Freedom: The Story Of A Vietnamese Political Refugee, Stephaney A. Jones-Vo

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

My husband has often said to me, "I am you and you are me." It is in this spirit that I can only attempt to give voice to his incredible story of "rising up" again. It is in this spirit that I humbly try to commit some memories to paper for posterity in an attempt to give an almost lost voice a sounding board. It is in this spirit that I recognize the voices of all refugees who share a loud, yet unheard voice. It is in this spirit of unity with him that I would like to record his ...

The Attitudes Of Five International Teaching Assistants (Itas) Towards Teachers, Teaching, And Their Ita Training Course, Duane Curtis Litwiller

Retrospective Theses and Dissertations

The more teachers know about their students, the easier it is to meet their students' needs and expectations. The investigator's objective of this qualitative study was to gain in-depth knowledge of five international teaching assistants (ITAs) from China from the researcher's own ITA training class to determine (1) how their views of teachers and teaching had been shaped by Chinese society, and (2) the degree of agreement between their expectations of the ITA training class and goals that had been set for the class. Data were collected via open-ended interviews and questionnaires. The results showed that (1) the ...
