Content-based instruction (CBI) in all forms is widely used in ESL programs in higher education. The adjunct model of CBI, which links ESL classes to academic content courses, is regarded as an effective way to provide a transition between ESL and academic classes. Vietnamese immigrants within the United States have demonstrated a strong desire to retain their ethnocultural identity. They have also experienced tremendous pressure to use English. What are the implications of these two trends for identity and language choice within the Vietnamese-American community? The presented research used multidimensional scaling (MDS) methods to describe the subjects' ethnic and language identities. The population for the study consisted of adult Vietnamese-Americans who were born in Vietnam and were currently living in the US. The study had two stages. The following list of principles is my attempt to share general recommendations to teachers of ESOL and/or limited literacy adults based on my specific practice running a bilingual family literacy program and confirmed by my more recent experience as a volunteer bilingual literacy teacher at the Asociación Latinoamericana (in Atlanta). Though I believe in bilingual classroom environments, I think the principles identified here are also pertinent to monolingual ESL environments.

Group work has come to play an increasingly significant role in the second language classroom due to its myriad advantages. Researchers have found that bringing language learners together for various activities provides them with greater opportunities to improve on the quality as well as the quantity of their linguistic output. This study was undertaken in Namibia, to determine causes for student dropouts m continuing education face-to-face centers. The utilized sample in the study consisted of one hundred and seventy learners (including both current & non-continuing learners), and sixty tutors. In this context, dropout refers to those students enrolling for a course (Grade 10, Standard 10) at face-to-face centers and discontinuing their studies before completing the entire course. This study examined attitudes and motivation of second language learners in Kuwait. A self-report questionnaire was adapted from Gardner's (1985) Attitude and Motivation Test Battery and translated into Arabic, the participants' first language. Several methods were used in dealing with the data collected: descriptive statistics, correlation, and t-test. Scores on each measure were used as separate variables to examine the relationship between any two variables (nine hypotheses). The more teachers know about their students, the easier it is to meet their students' needs and expectations. The investigator's objective of this qualitative study was to gain in-depth knowledge of five international teaching assistants (ITAs) from China from the researcher's own ITA training class to determine (1) how their views of teachers and teaching had been shaped by Chinese society, and (2) the degree of agreement between their expectations of the ITA training class and goals that had been set for the class. This thesis describes and examines an experimental ESL composition course that featured cooperative learning and collaborative writing , a course that also involved thematic sequencing of assignments and portfolio grading of students' individual writing. The course was a revised version of Iowa State University's English 101C (Advanced Composition for Non-Native Speakers of English), with the revisions directed toward the attainment of the official course goal of preparing ESL students for the Iowa State First Year Composition Program. The changes in the course enabled 101C students to write assignments modeled on ISU freshman composition assignments--particularly academic and argumentative writing assignments.

The purpose of this study was to determine the difference in White Racial Identity and degree of tolerance for Blacks between two samples of White male undergraduate students attending an urban Black university and those attending an urban White university. The theoretical framework for this study was based in Social Contact Theory as a contributor to racial tolerance and Racial Identity Development Theory as a factor in human growth toward increasing acceptance of diversity. This was a quasi-experimental post-hoc design using intact groups.

This study of African American undergraduates at Emory & Henry College, Tusculum College, Western Carolina University, East Tennessee State University, Appalachian State University, and University of North Carolina at Asheville was conducted to determine students' stages of identity development, level of involvement in campus activities, and demographic characteristics within historically White Southern Appalachian colleges and universities, both public and independent. The three volumes which make up this study describe in detail how a number of teachers in different school situations in different parts of Australia undertook the assessment of young children's development of English as a second language. Most of the teachers worked in pre-primary to Year 3 classrooms where the majority of the children were aged between five and eight years. Advancements in the design and use of computer-assisted language learning (CALL) activities require that key questions about CALL be identified and effective research methods be used to answer them. In this paper, I suggest looking to research on other types of second language (L2) classroom learning activities for guidance in framing CALL research questions and in discovering relevant research methods.
