Christian Witness And Respect For Persons, Bradley Baurain Dec 2006

Christian Witness And Respect For Persons, Bradley Baurain

Bradley Baurain

Respect for persons has been widely acknowledged and discussed as a key moral dimension in education and teaching English to speakers of other languages. Christians believe in this value, particularly as it is articulated within scripture and tradition. Recent critics, however, seem to perceive a basic incompatibility between a Christian religious imperative to bear witness to one’s faith and a moral imperative to respect other persons. Beginning from an argument that all teaching is teaching for change, this essay makes a case that the two are not only not contradictory, but in fact should be consanguineous. Key issues explored include …

Small Group Multitasking In Literature Classes, Bradley Baurain Dec 2006

Small Group Multitasking In Literature Classes, Bradley Baurain

Bradley Baurain

Faced with the challenge of teaching American literature to large, multilevel classes in Vietnam, the writer developed a flexible small group framework called ‘multitasking’. ‘Multitasking’ sets up stable task categories which rotate among small groups from lesson to lesson. This framework enabled students to work cooperatively in a variety of formats and the teacher to generate a wide range of materials and activities efficiently. It also spurred students to develop more independent learning skills and the teacher to experiment more freely with new techniques. In a narrative and reflective format, in terms both of what he expected and what he …

What Contributes To Asian Model Minority Academic Success? An Ecological Perspective, Gulbahar Beckett Dec 2006

What Contributes To Asian Model Minority Academic Success? An Ecological Perspective, Gulbahar Beckett

Gulbahar Beckett

Asians in America are perceived to be model minorities and Asian American students are believed to be exceptional educational achievers. Some believe this is a model minority phenomenon that needs to be demystified as it is a stereotype detrimental to Asian American students social and psychological well-being. Some attribute Asian-American student academic achievement to factors such as parents' and students' attitudes and actions toward schoolwork, economic and ethnic status, human and social capital, family structure, community organization, and cultural and linguistic patterns. Others attribute it to factors such as self-perception, school expectations and organization, students cultural and background knowledge, and …

Reconciliation And Social Action In Cyprus: Citizens’ Inertia And The Protracted State Of Limbo, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This paper will attempt to chart a normative framework for action for a social politics of reconciliation via a course for citizens’ action across the ethnic divide of Cyprus. It will attempt to consider the context and content of reconciliation in Cyprus at this time and examine the various ‘routes’ to reconciliation, in terms of locating their theoretical, philosophical and ethical points of reference. Whilst ‘reconciliation’ is something that normally takes place after a settlement, the groundwork (conceptual, political and societal) needs to begin whenever the potential is there: the protracted state of limbo that characterises the Cyprus problem as …

Populism, Democracy And Social Citizenship: Discourses On ‘Illegal Migration’ Or Beyond The ‘Fortress’ Versus ‘Cosmopolitanism’ Debate, Nicos Trimikliniotis Dec 2006

Populism, Democracy And Social Citizenship: Discourses On ‘Illegal Migration’ Or Beyond The ‘Fortress’ Versus ‘Cosmopolitanism’ Debate, Nicos Trimikliniotis

Nicos Trimikliniotis

This paper aims to connect articulations of ‘racism’ and ‘populism’ within discursive uses of ‘illegal immigration’ in the context of European-wide processes, which frame migrants as the ‘other’: such view have in fact become hegemonic over the recent years. The aim is to connect discourses of ‘illegal’ immigration to social phenomena, such as racist populism in democratic process and debates regarding social citizenship. The examination of the construction processes of exclusionary citizenship, both at European and at national level, via the discourses of undocumented migrant labour is a process that tends to racialise liberal democracy across Europe. Moreover, this process …
