A critical review of the literature on computer-assisted language learning (CALL) research between 1980 and 2005 indicates that no one in the field of foreign language at the elementary school (FLES) has identified what principles might be useful for practice-oriented CALL that is relevant for young learners, and that very little research had been published in the area. This study uses feminist life-history narrative methodology to explore the experiences of three African women, who have pursued or are pursuing higher education in the United States, leaving their families in Africa. Contextualized within the socio-historical cultural, colonial, and post-colonial discourses on domesticity and education, this study not only illuminates the pain, ambivalence and struggles women experienced in pursuit of higher education, but also reveals the tension between domesticity and education and how this tension inhibits African women's access to education. Demographic trends indicate that the nation's school population is increasing in its percentage of children of color, while the teacher education students are largely European American women from rural areas. Additionally, these teacher education students have little experience with, or knowledge of diverse cultures. Theory and research on second language acquisition (SLA) indicates that modification in the interactions between second language (L2) students and native speakers may have a positive influence on their acquisition of language (Long, 1983; Allright, 1991; Larsen-Freeman & Long, 1991). However, there is not enough opportunity for interactional modifications in the L2 classroom because there is only one native speaker for many students, making it impossible for teachers to engage in numerous interactional modifications with individual students.;CALL developers claim that CALL offers an environment in which an L2 student can participate in interactive learning (Ahmad, 1985; Kenning, 1990).
