Revisiting Multiplication Area Models For Whole Numbers, Oh-Hoon Kwon, Ji-Won Son, Ji Yeong I

We argue that there are two conceptually different area models for whole number multiplication: area-to-area model and lengths-to-area model depending on how multiplication operation is conceived: action on / change of an initial quantity, or operation / coordination of two quantities. These models complement each other to promote students’ conceptual understanding of whole number multiplication and help students extend their understanding of whole number multiplication to fraction multiplication.

In this study, a researcher collaborated with a middle school mathematics teacher through co-planning, teaching and reflecting upon mathematical modeling lessons to support emergent bilinguals to make sense of mathematics. We investigate how this collaboration impacts the process of co-teaching and co-planning in terms of the interactions between the researcher and the teacher. Our analysis reveals how each role changed and maintained during the collaboration and what factors were discussed to develop and implement modeling-based lessons for emergent bilinguals.

Purpose - In some fields, research group experiences gained in laboratories are more influential than the classroom in shaping graduate students' research abilities, understandings of post-graduate careers, and professional identities. However, we know little about what and how students learn from their research group experiences. This article explores the learning experiences of engineering graduate students in one chemical engineering research group to determine what students learned and identify the practices and activities that facilitated their learning.

Although English language learners (ELLs) are one of the fastest growing groups of students in the United States, many teacher preparation programs have yet to require preservice teachers (PSTs) to receive training in effective practices for teaching ELLs. We examined a four-week field experience pairing an elementary PST with an ELL. We examined the strategies PSTs used to support ELLs as they implemented cognitively demanding mathematics tasks. Teachers in Korea have recently confronted new challenges as the population of linguistically and culturally diverse students increases. Ethnically diverse students as well as Korea-born students returning from long residences in foreign countries have great difficulties orienting themselves within Korean schools due to lack of Korean language proficiency and cultural differences. George Roberts has been teaching ninth-grade Earth science in Gardston, Iowa, for 10 years. This year, as chair of Gardston High School's science department, he agreed to have all the English Language Learner (ELL) students assigned to his classes. George's goal was to learn more about the needs of these students and arrive at a set of techniques he could share with the rest of his science team. Unlike many other science educators, George has a distinct advantage: The majority of ELLs at Gardston High School immigrate from a particular community.
