Thinking In Hashtags: Exploring Teenagers’ New Literacies Practices On Twitter, Benjamin W. Gleason

This research investigates how three high school students in the USA developed new literacies practices through their participation in teenage Twitter. Data was collected from two sources, including archival data from participants’ Twitter over a two-year span, and semi-structured interviews. Results found that teenagers developed a number of practices that facilitated orientation to cultural conventions of teenage Twitter, helped them mobilize followers for participatory events, and led to reflective awareness of how to tell stories on Twitter. A Meta-Analysis Of Effectiveness Studies On Computer Technology-Supported Language Learning, Maja Grgurovic, Carol Chapelle, Mack C. Shelley

With the aim of summarizing years of research comparing pedagogies for second/foreign language teaching supported with computer technology and pedagogy not-supported by computer technology, a meta-analysis was conducted of empirical research investigating language outcomes. Thirty-seven studies yielding 52 effect sizes were included, following a search of literature from 1970 to 2006 and screening of studies based on stated criteria. The differences in research designs required subdivision of studies, but overall results favored the technology-supported pedagogy, with a small, but positive and statistically significant effect size. Authoring System For Courseware Development: What Should Beginners Look For?, Carol Chapelle, Joan Jamieson

This paper is an introduction to courseware authoring systems, which are defined as software devised for an instructional environment that simplifies courseware development. The process of courseware authoring is described as consisting of two basic elements: computer and lesson. These two elements are further subdivided and the use of authoring systems to simplify each of these subcomponents is described. Suggestions are made for educators who are considering authoring systems to be used to develop courseware.
