A Meta-Analysis Of Effectiveness Studies On Computer Technology-Supported Language Learning, Maja Grgurovic, Carol Chapelle, Mack C. Shelley

With the aim of summarizing years of research comparing pedagogies for second/foreign language teaching supported with computer technology and pedagogy not-supported by computer technology, a meta-analysis was conducted of empirical research investigating language outcomes. Thirty-seven studies yielding 52 effect sizes were included, following a search of literature from 1970 to 2006 and screening of studies based on stated criteria. The differences in research designs required subdivision of studies, but overall results favored the technology-supported pedagogy, with a small, but positive and statistically significant effect size. This paper argues that the vertical spread of computer-assisted language learning (CALL), i.e., a spread throughout language materials and curricula, makes it difficult to draw a clear distinction between CALL and other language materials. In view of the emphasis that teachers, researchers, and administrators have placed on evaluating CALL, I argue that some valuable lessons about materials evaluation can be drawn from reflection on issues in CALL evaluation. In Spring semester 2006, we conducted a study with 50 learners of German to investigate the use of a new measure (Cárdenas-Claros, 2005) for research on the field independent/dependent (FID) cognitive style and CALL use. After the measure was administered, students worked on a CALL program for German that logs interaction. The problem of this study was to evaluate the success of the Iowa State University (ISU) Linkage project (Crawford & Melnichuk, 1994) at the National Agricultural University of Ukraine (NAUU). The evaluation of the project's success and the educational changes it brought about were accomplished by determining the levels of use of the key elements of this change: the revised curriculum, new methods of teaching, and new teaching materials used at NAUU. This program evaluation research of the Linkage project was conducted based on the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM). The Levels of Use dimension of the Concerns-Based Adoption Model was applied to determine if the Linkage project was successful;The survey questionnaire consisted of sections describing the NAUU participants': demographic characteristics; knowledge of the English language; understanding of the essence of the Linkage project; awareness of the administrative changes at NAUU; and levels of use of the new curriculum developed as the result of the Linkage project.
