The number of international students pursuing postsecondary degrees in the United States has increased consistently over the past several years (Institute of International Education 2012, 2013). In fact, the most recent report— for academic year 2012–13—indicates that compared to the previous academic year, the number of international students at U.S. colleges and universities increased by 7.2 percent, to more than 800,000. This study investigates the literacy resources and strategies Spanish/English bilinguals use to detect bias in a propaganda text. Drawing upon previous work done in history literacy by Schleppegrell, Achugar, and Oteiza (2004), this study presented participants with a propaganda text from Nazi Germany which criticizes Albert Einstein. Without knowing the context of the article, participants responded to discussion questions which investigated whether participants could detect the bias, what literacy strategies the participants used to find the bias, and whether and how the participants perceived differences between reading the text in their first (L1) and second languages (L2). English as a Second Language (ESL) classroom learning demonstrates a dynamic situation in that learners encounter adjustment issues in relation to linguistic and cultural differences. This study incorporated a technology-mediated language teaching method, called project-oriented computer-assisted language learning (PrOCALL), into the research framework to gain an understanding of how the PrOCALL approach to ESL reading instruction facilitates East Asian students' cross-cultural transition. This paper argues that the vertical spread of computer-assisted language learning (CALL), i.e., a spread throughout language materials and curricula, makes it difficult to draw a clear distinction between CALL and other language materials. In view of the emphasis that teachers, researchers, and administrators have placed on evaluating CALL, I argue that some valuable lessons about materials evaluation can be drawn from reflection on issues in CALL evaluation. Most of us recall the first time we had English Language Learners (ELLs) in our classrooms. What does this child understand? How do I help her feel comfortable when I can’t communicate in the same language? How do I teach academic subjects and monitor progress when he doesn’t speak the language of instruction? How will her peers act toward her? These concerns are often coupled with a fear that spending valuable instructional time helping the ELLs may cause us to neglect the bulk of our class who are not ELLs.

In pronunciation, segmental accuracy has been recognized as an important aspect in contributing to a non-native speaker's intelligibility. Nonetheless, there has been a lack of research focusing on the role of segmental errors in understanding extended discourse. This study sought to determine if the graduation rates of students of color and majority students at public, research extensive and intensive institutions could be predicted by institutional resource allocation activities in the context of both the internal and external environments of universities. The large national sample of racial-ethnically diverse participants in this study was derived from the vast information obtained during the revision of the 1994 Strong Interest Inventory (SII: L. W. Harmon, J. C. Hansen, F. H. Borgen & A. L. Hammer, 1994). The balanced sample utilized in the study contained 3,087 individuals from four of the major U.S. racial-ethnic groups: 805 African Americans, 795 Asian Americans, 800 Caucasian Americans, and 687 Hispanic Americans.
