On A Continuum: Examining Ncore's Influence In The Development Of Multicultural Competence In Student Affairs Educators, Jennifer Lynn Plagman-Galvin, Ann M. Gansemer-Topf

Multiculturally competent student affairs educators are required to effectively meet the needs of today’s diverse student population. However, little is known about how educators acquire these skills. This study examined the multicultural awareness, knowledge, and skills gained by student affairs educators through their participation in NCORE, an experiential conference exploring race and ethnicity. Results of the study have implications for graduate preparation programs and professional development opportunities for student affairs educators.

In this paper, we introduce L2-ARCTIC, a speech corpus of non-native English that is intended for research in voice conversion, accent conversion, and mispronunciation detection. This initial release includes recordings from ten non-native speakers of English whose first languages (L1s) are Hindi, Korean, Mandarin, Spanish, and Arabic, each L1 containing recordings from one male and one female speaker. Each speaker recorded approximately one hour of read speech from the Carnegie Mellon University ARCTIC prompts, from which we generated orthographic and forced-aligned phonetic transcriptions. This practitioner reflection focuses on the challenges and possibilities of encounter dialogue-music education organizations in Israel/Palestine using musicking (Small, 1995) and dialogical programming to examine, question, and reflect upon the purpose and role of Israeli and Palestinian national days, markers which build individual and collective identity in irreconcilable dissonance with each other. Despite a growing body of work on the experiences of Black collegians, the higher education knowledge base lacks scholarship focused on Black men in graduate programs who are foreign-born and/or identify ethnically as other than African American. In this article, we provide a domain-specific investigation (i.e., based on students’ field of study), centering on nine Black men in engineering graduate programs. This paper explores how student affairs practitioners may engage in critical cultural praxis through participatory action research (PAR). As authors, both researchers and practitioners, we partnered with one another to conduct a needs assessment of Asian American students through PAR methods at a university in the northeast United States. Unfortunately, the PAR project as initially designed did not come to fruition. We used autoethnography to understand the many barriers that prevented the completion of the project, such as lengthy and unclear IRB processes, lack of organizational stability, and limited institutional support. The number of international students pursuing postsecondary degrees in the United States has increased consistently over the past several years (Institute of International Education 2012, 2013). We amended the rich PISA (Program for International Student Assessment) data to include culture measures of power distance; uncertainty avoidance; individualism-collectivism; masculinity-femininity; and longand short-term orientation based on country. The added scores of each country on the culture components were obtained from the extensive studies of Hofstede and colleagues (2010). The dependent variables in our study are students’ achievements in the fields of reading, math, and science from various countries taken from PISA data. According to the 1989 report on foreign students by the Institute of International Education, there were 366,354 foreign students attending colleges and universities in the United States during the 1989/1990 school year. These students corne from 172 different countries and territories. Over 50% of the foreign students in the United States come from Asia, 12.3% from Latin America, 1.7% from Europe, 11.0% from the Middle East, 7.1% from Africa, and 5.7% from Canada.
