It is the purpose of this paper to demonstrate how poetry can be a valuable tool in the ESL classroom, the problems connected with relying on extant verse for work with ESL students, and the consequential preferability of producing one's own poetry. In addition, guidelines and suggestions are offered for creating original and goal-specific works, together with ways in which those works, once made, may be used most effectively in the ESL classroom.
