CUNY Mexican Studies Institute

The CUNY Mexican Studies Institute (CUNY MSI) has been working to equalize the educational achievement disparities among Mexican and Mexican-American students, striving to ensure they have equal access and support for thriving in our institution and beyond.

Consistent with the mission of the CUNY MSI, the Mexican Studies Scholarship Fund seeks highly motivated students, with a record of commitment to service in the immigrant and Mexican community in New York, without considering immigration status. Thus far, the Mexican Studies Scholarship Fund has awarded over 200 scholarships to students from 13 countries.

Critical reading is the apex of tertiary education and the chief focus in higher education courses as they prepare adults for the workforce. Without significant improvements in academic preparation and support, many linguistically diverse [LD] students will have higher dropout rates in their first year of college. Developmental reading instruction practices are designed to emphasize moving the first-year LD students from sub-par reading levels towards the application and development of critical reading skills, as demanded by their college courses. This report provides a summary of a survey of CUNY ESL faculty and administrators in an attempt to assess CUNY ESL programs’ achievements and to offer an insight into current challenges. In the new millennium, with educational, financial, political, and linguistic concerns on the rise, taking stock of where we are in English as a second language instruction in higher education and planning for the future are at once prudent and pressing.
