Creating Inclusive Interface And Online Learning Environments, Grace Mosher
Creating Inclusive Interface And Online Learning Environments, Grace Mosher
Master of Science in Education | Master's Theses
This study seeks to examine educational learning environments with a focus on new platforms of learning, course design, equity, inclusion, and user interface (ex: seeing impaired, cultural differences, gender) that includes the perspectives of students with disabilities. The evolution of learning from singular multi-age classrooms through institutional schools and into dynamic online platforms has radically reshaped the educational ecosystem (Sarkar, 2020), and there have been calls for a deeper understanding of inclusive learning practices to meet the needs of diverse students (Philips & Salem, 2021). Adams (2017) also outlines how the aesthetic interface of each learning environment impacts the quality …

An Evaluation Of Augmented Reality-Based User Interfaces In The Design Process, Feyza Nur Koçer Özgün, Sema Alaçam
Architecture and Planning Journal (APJ)
The aim of this study is to evaluate the user interfaces that reflect different interaction layers in the context of Augmented Reality technology. Depending on the physical characteristics of human interaction with the computer, these layers were examined under four sections: Graphical User Interface (GUI), Tangible User Interface (TUI), Natural User Interface (NUI) and Spatial User Interface (SUI). In this context, a proposed Augmented Reality application interface has been developed to bridge the physical and digital environment. The use of AR-based applications in the design process provided a basis for evaluating the user interface in these interaction layers. In future …

In the theories of User Interfaces (UI) and User Experience (UX), the goal is generally to help understand the needs of users and how software can be best configured to optimize how the users can interact with it by removing any unnecessary barriers. However, some systems are designed to make people unwillingly agree to share more data than they intend to, or to spend more money than they plan to, using deception or other psychological nudges. User Interface experts have categorized a number of these tricks that are commonly used and have called them Dark Patterns. Dark Patterns are varied …

Empathy Mapping: Bridging Cultural And Linguistic Divides In International Online Education, Juliet Lammers
Teaching Culturally and Linguistically Diverse International Students in Open or Online Learning Environments: A Research Symposium
The concept of empathy, commonly used in user experience (UX) design, has gained traction in distance education communities (Matthews et al., 2017). Empathy offers designers insight into users and their contexts (Neubauer et al., 2017) and helps designers “understand how instruction would be experienced” (Parrish, 2006), thus improving the overall outcome (Lewis & Contrino, 2016; Neubauer et al., 2017; Parrish, 2006). UX designers use a visualization tool called empathy mapping to chart information about their users. Empathy maps are used at the outset of a project and continue to evolve and inform the project as new data emerges. This paper …

Inclusive Ux: Centering Marginalized Users At Cal Poly, Sejal Kargal
Computer Science and Software Engineering
The focus of human-centered design should be on centering all users in an inclusive manner by considering different design considerations, methods, and practices (Shalamova, 2019). Through this project I will research ways in which UX has pushed certain types of people intentionally or unintentionally to the margins and explore potential solutions as design recommendations for inclusive UX focusing primarily on Cal Poly student technology and resources (Lahlou, 2017). The users I will be focusing on are students of color, students with disabilities, first-generation college students, and disadvantaged students. In the context of virtual learning in the …

Building And Using Digital Libraries For Etds, Edward A. Fox
Building And Using Digital Libraries For Etds, Edward A. Fox
The Journal of Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Despite the high value of electronic theses and dissertations (ETDs), the global collection has seen limited use. To extend such use, a new approach to building digital libraries (DLs) is needed. Fortunately, recent decades have seen that a vast amount of “gray literature” has become available through a diverse set of institutional repositories as well as regional and national libraries and archives. Most of the works in those collections include ETDs and are often freely available in keeping with the open-access movement, but such access is limited by the services of supporting information systems. As explained through a set of …
Investigating The User Experience With A 3d Virtual Anatomy Application, Winnyanne Kunkle
Investigating The User Experience With A 3d Virtual Anatomy Application, Winnyanne Kunkle
CCE Theses and Dissertations
Decreasing hours dedicated to teaching anatomy courses and declining use of human cadavers have spurred the need for innovative solutions in teaching anatomy in medical schools. Advancements in virtual reality (VR), 3D visualizations, computer graphics, and medical graphic images have enabled the development of highly interactive 3D virtual applications. Over recent years, variations of interactive systems on computer-mediated environments have been used as supplementary resource for learners. However, despite the growing sophistication of these resources for learning anatomy, studies show that students predominantly prefer traditional methods of learning and hands-on cadaver-based learning over computer-mediated platforms.
There is limited research on …

Virtual Enhancement To Physical Spaces: A Qr Code Based Orientation Game, Vanessa P. Dennen, Shuang Hao, Sungwoong Lee, Taehyeong Lim
The Emerging Learning Design Journal
University orientations are typically passive events for students, with activities that include sitting and listening to speakers and perhaps talking to others seated nearby. In this project, the authors sought to provide a more active and collaborative component to a university orientation via a team-based game that incorporated content included in a typical orientation and modeled appropriate instructional technology use. This mobile orientation game used QR codes and videos to augment the physical environment of an academic building. This paper describes the design and development process for this game, and presents the results of an evaluation conducted at the end. …

Empathy And The Instructional Designer, Gregory Spencer Williams
Empathy And The Instructional Designer, Gregory Spencer Williams
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to understand how instructional designers define empathy in the context of instructional design technology and how empathy was manifest in their daily work. Through a series of in-depth interviews with six designers, three definitions of empathy emerged including caring for the learner, referencing personal experience in service of the learner, and taking on somebody else's viewpoint. Additionally, analysis of empathy in participants' daily work resulted in six themes: personal experience, metacognition or self-awareness, project management constraints, multiple stakeholders, practical processes and traditional learner analysis, and navigating learner goals and motivation. Several complexities regarding empathy …

Improving Primo Usability And Teachability With Help From The Users, Barbara Valentine, Beth West
Faculty & Staff Publications
In the aftermath of a consortium migration to a shared cloud-based resource management and discovery system, a small college library implemented a web usability test to uncover the kinds of difficulties students had with the new interface. Lessons learned from this study led to targeted changes, which simplified aspects of searching, but also enhanced the librarians’ ability to teach more effectively. The authors discuss the testing methods, results, and teaching opportunities, both realized and potential, which arose from implementing changes.
Ships Passing In The Night? E-Learning Designers' Experiences With User Experience, Christijan D. Draper
Ships Passing In The Night? E-Learning Designers' Experiences With User Experience, Christijan D. Draper
Theses and Dissertations
This qualitative study investigated the extent to which a diverse sub-set of e-learning designers were aware of UX principles and practices, where their e-learning design practices overlapped with established UX practices, and where UX principles might benefit e-learning designers. E-learning has grown dramatically as an area of focus in instructional design within the last decade and a half. This growth suggests a need for a better understanding of design tools, concepts and principles that can guide an e-learning designer to design better and more effective instruction. One field of design that has potentially had an impact on e-learning design recently …
Connecting Dots : Interaction Design For Holistic Learning, Michelle Tan
Connecting Dots : Interaction Design For Holistic Learning, Michelle Tan
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Connecting Dots proposes that new media such as interactive websites can be developed using a design framework based on elements of holistic education identified by Miller (1996) as Balance, Inclusion and Connection, so that holistic learning can be achieved. Recognising the negative consequences of the focus on meritocracy, the Singapore government have in recent years advocated for a transformation of the education system to include opportunities for holistic learning. This research contends that holistic learning is a responsibility that has to be shared by both the education system and families. This should be cultivated in a child from an …
