Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs
Given the important role of assessment in the process of Second Language Learning (SLL) and framed within Vygotsky’s Zone of Proximal Development (ZPD), this study aims to analyze: (1) how EFL teachers’ understanding of the role of assessment in SLL can be improved, (2) how effective dynamic assessment is in their teaching practices, (3) how EFL teachers’ assessment practices reflect their understanding of the concept of assessment/dynamic assessment, and (4) what strategies can help them understand these concepts. These four points are studied within the context of English classes at a Language Institute in Quito, Ecuador. This project’s contribution brings …

Students' Perceptions Of Online Equine Courses And Their Impacts On Learning Outcomes, Blaire (Gibbens) Speck
Students' Perceptions Of Online Equine Courses And Their Impacts On Learning Outcomes, Blaire (Gibbens) Speck
Department of Animal Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Post-secondary education is always changing and evolving. Over the last few years, significant changes in education have resulted in an increased number of online courses. Approximately 28% of students seeking higher education participate in at least one online course and 14% are enrolled exclusively in distance or online programs (Allen & Seaman, 2016). However, courses that are typically hands-on, like equine science, may be more challenging online. The hands-on experiences in equine science classes help prepare students for future careers. Due to an increase in students choosing to take courses online, a review of online teaching methods was conducted to …

Physician Quality Scores And The Presentation And Delivery Method Of Data In A Residency Program, Monaco Briggs
Physician Quality Scores And The Presentation And Delivery Method Of Data In A Residency Program, Monaco Briggs
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The United States health care expenditures are higher than any other developed country. Due to this, physician payment reform is moving from fee-for-service (FFS) to a value-based model, with a focus on prevention and quality. The purpose of this quantitative study was to measure the effect of a series of data delivery interventions associated with the quality scorecards and which method increased the quality scores at a medical teaching practice in Tennessee.
Data were gathered via the Physician Quality Scorecard, an internally developed instrument. Each quarter, a different data delivery intervention was performed, and scorecard data were analyzed …
Teaching From The Heart: Using Techniques Of Kindfulness In Teaching To Build A More Empathic And Compassionate Campus, Margaret Butcher
Teaching From The Heart: Using Techniques Of Kindfulness In Teaching To Build A More Empathic And Compassionate Campus, Margaret Butcher
TFSC Publications and Presentations
In today’s world of self-absorption and social and political division, we all need a space that is welcoming and inviting. Teaching with just intellect and without heart may be ‘safe’ but can lead to passionless learning. Creating a classroom that honors space for everyone in the room with a trusting environment can help students find the “So what?” and “Who cares?” that may lurk within the course content. Teachers who view themselves simply as a delivery mechanism for content is missing the opportunity to turn on kindness and compassion in their students that can help build a better humanity. Dr. …

Learning Within Socio-Political Landscapes: (Re)Imagining Children’S Geographies, Kathryn Lanouette, Katie Headrick Taylor
Occasional Paper Series
In this special issue, we bring together educators and researchers to (re)imagine what it means to teach and learn within the immediacy of the here and now, an orientation crucial to confronting contemporary threats to children’s lives, democracy, and the planet. We seek to extend and broaden Mitchell’s original conceptualization by centering the past and future alongside the immediacies of the now, elevating Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) perspectives in children’s geographies and exploring potentialities of mapping in analog as well as emerging digital forms. We also aim to carry forward her commitments to listening to children with …

Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
This essay offers a set of strategies for utilizing the words of survivors and of witnesses to genocide in the classroom. Including the voices of survivors and victims in our classroom conversations about genocide, its impact, representation, and the possibilities for its prevention is crucial to an ethical and wholistic pedagogy of genocide. Discussion of these events in the classroom often finds us confronting questions from students about truth, historical accuracy, authenticity, and authority. Addressing such questions requires careful framing that takes into account student assumptions and cultural discourses about memory and witnessing, as we work with students to develop …

Using Natural Language Processing To Increase Modularity And Interpretability Of Automated Essay Evaluation And Student Feedback, Chris Roche, Nathan Deinlein, Darryl Dawkins, Faizan Javed
SMU Data Science Review
For English teachers and students who are dissatisfied with the one-size-fits-all approach of current Automated Essay Scoring (AES) systems, this research uses Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques that provide a focus on configurability and interpretability. Unlike traditional AES models which are designed to provide an overall score based on pre-trained criteria, this tool allows teachers to tailor feedback based upon specific focus areas. The tool implements a user-interface that serves as a customizable rubric. Students’ essays are inputted into the tool either by the student or by the teacher via the application’s user-interface. Based on the rubric settings, the tool …

The Application Of Praxis In High School Classrooms: A Qualitative Case Study, Tonia R. Maher
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the application of educational research-based instructional methods by teachers in public secondary high school classrooms in Colorado. The use of educational research-based instructional methods will be defined as praxis. Bruner’s constructivist theory of learning and instruction guided this study. This qualitative case study employed an epistemological perspective that provided the framework for predicting, describing, empowering, and deconstructing worldviews by increasing the knowledge that leads to further understanding of the application of praxis in public secondary high school classrooms. The setting was Colorado public high schools. Data were collected from interviews, …

Public Service Interpreter Education In The Gulf States: Ideas For Curriculum Design And Teaching, Mustapha Taibi
International Journal of Interpreter Education
The Gulf States host large numbers of non-Arabic-speaking residents and visitors. These non-nationals need to deal with such public services as hospitals, schools, courts, and other local administrations. In many cases, English is used as a lingua franca; however, not all public service staff or clients are able to speak or communicate effectively in this language. The communication needs in such situations require the assistance of professional public service interpreters, which, in turn, calls for appropriate education. In this paper, I outline education needs in public service interpreting in the Gulf States; provide an overview of common curricular contents and …

"Everything Is Political Now": Teaching Politics In The Age Of Trump, John G. Lund
College of Education Theses and Dissertations
Many American high school government and history teachers aim to convey curriculum content without bringing in their own personal political beliefs or biases. However, in the hyperpolarized political climate of the past decade, teachers have grappled with teaching their courses when potentially controversial political or cultural issues come up in class conversations or lessons. Their teaching decisions and the classroom environment can have an impact on students’ learning, mental health, and their own views on American politics, history, and culture. This qualitative, narrative inquiry study examined ten high school teachers’ practice of teaching politics in the age of Trump. Findings …

English Teachers' Opinions On Challenges Face In Teaching English As Foreign Language: The Case Of Jalalabad Selected Secondary Schools, Fahim Rahimi, Hangama Samadi
Journal of Research Initiatives
One important goal of teaching is to achieve learning outcomes. It has been observed in universities that many students have different levels of English language proficiency. However, they study in the same English courses at the school level. The main objective of this study is to learn the challenges that exist in teaching the English language as a foreign language in secondary schools that affect the English proficiency of students. In addition, ways in which these challenges will be overcome is reviewed. The data collection tools were questionnaires and semi-structured interviews to collect data from English language teachers in selected …

What this is is a candid and current interpretation of thoughts and findings from the collection of resources I was fortunate enough to have encountered throughout my time here. Some of these writings are written specifically for artists, some for arts educators, some for designers and activists, and even some on psychotherapy.
All these topics bouncing off each other, as I read them with the same questions, generated their own unique sentiment. I feel like I’m just beginning to understand what this is, and will share as best I can what I do understand so far.

Prepared To Succeed: A Systematic Grounded Theory Examining The Nature, Development, And Perceived Benefits Of Homeschool Teacher Self-Efficacy In Wisconsin, Joshua D. Andrew
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
The purpose of this systematic grounded theory study was to define and explain the development of homeschool teacher self-efficacy and its significance for homeschooling parents in Wisconsin. Bandura’s self-efficacy theory served as the initial theoretical framework for this study, as it defined four general sources of self-efficacy development: enactive mastery experiences, vicarious experiences through social models, social persuasion, and the regulation of physical and emotional states. Through surveys, open-ended interviews, focus groups, and artifacts received from 10 homeschooling parents, this study attempted to define how homeschooling parents perceive homeschool teacher self-efficacy, to what homeschooling parents attribute the development of homeschool …

Using Extended Realities To Teach Construction Management, Ryan A. Duca
Construction Management
This project aimed to analyze the implementation of extended realities to teach construction management at the university level. Extended realities in this context are referring to augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR); these are the two for which funding was received by Cavrnus. The foundation for this project started with the pre-existing lesson for the California Polytechnic State University’s (Cal Poly) residential construction class. The original lesson was constructed with the students learning the wood framing of a house by reading. While this is a suitable learning method for some it is not the best for all. This project …
