Transition To A Career Calling: A Phenomenological Study, Elaine Buckley
Transition To A Career Calling: A Phenomenological Study, Elaine Buckley
Theses & Dissertations
This phenomenological study explored the experience of eight adults as they perceived, recognized, and transitioned (from valued work) to their career callings. The central phenomenon of this research, callings, is defined as “inner directives towards meaningful life pursuits” (Wall, 2010, p. 7). The response to a calling was explored using William Bridge’s model for moving through life transitions. The research participants were teachers in midlife who had taught in grades K-12 for a minimum of five years after participating in an alternative teacher certification program. Semi-structured interviews included the use of expressive arts providing rich descriptions of the lived experiences …

A Q-Methodology Approach To Investigating The Relationship Between Level Of Reflection And Typologies Among Prospective Teachers In The Physics Learning Assistant Program At Florida International University, Geraldine L. Cochran
FIU Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this mixed methods study was to understand physics Learning Assistants’ (LAs) views on reflective teaching, expertise in teaching, and LA program teaching experience and to determine if views predicted level of reflection evident in writing. Interviews were conducted in Phase One, Q methodology was used in Phase Two, and level of reflection in participants’ writing was assessed using a rubric based on Hatton and Smith’s (1995) “Criteria for the Recognition of Evidence for Different Types of Reflective Writing” in Phase Three.
Interview analysis revealed varying perspectives on content knowledge, pedagogical knowledge, and experience in relation to expertise …
How To Enable Asian Teachers To Empower Students To Adopt Student-Centred Learning, Thanh Thi Hong Pham, Peter Renshaw
How To Enable Asian Teachers To Empower Students To Adopt Student-Centred Learning, Thanh Thi Hong Pham, Peter Renshaw
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Asian teachers’ reluctance to empower students has been claimed to be an significant barrier preventing their students from practising student-centred learning. To promote student-centredness in Asian classrooms, this study aimed to develop strategies that could enable Asian teachers to delegate part of their authority to students. Twelve college teachers and six hundred and fifteen Vietnamese college students participated in this one-semester study. The results revealed that ‘artificial’ innovations such as forming group work and regularly questioning students in class did not mean empowering students in active learning. Students were only positioned and given opportunities to engage in proper student-centredness when …

In Pursuit Of Meaningful Dialogue: Using Protocols To Improve Discussion In Online And Face-To-Face Courses, Suzanne Ehrlich
International Journal of Interpreter Education
The purpose of our article is to discuss the use of a discussion strategy called protocols, which can be used in both online and face-to-face environments. Protocols provide a structured way of having a discussion that empowers all students to contribute their ideas in a safe environment by providing specific rules and clear roles for guiding the discussion. First, we provide a brief background on protocols and our experience with using protocols within an online course titled Orientation to Deafness. We then provide readers with a variety of example protocols that can be used in both face-to-face and online environments. …

First In Reform: The Adoption Of Common Core State Standards In Kentucky, Richard E. Day
Curriculum and Instruction Faculty and Staff Scholarship
On February 11, 2010, in an unprecedented joint meeting, the chairs of the Kentucky Board of Education, the Council on Postsecondary Education, and the Education Professional Standards Board signed a resolution directing their respective agencies to implement the Common Core State Standards in English/language arts and mathematics. This act formalized Kentucky’s commitment to integrate the nascent standards into the state’s public education system – the first state to do so. This article will trace the antecedents to Kentucky’s adoption of the standards as one expression of the late 20th century/early 21st century “corporate school reform movement” as manifested in the …

Textbooks, Teachers, And Middle School Mathematics Student Achievement, Susan R. Monaghan
Dissertations (1934 -)
The purpose of this study was to extend the research on textbook effectiveness to a situated investigation of a single large urban school district in which middle schools were given a choice in selecting from three textbooks for mathematics instruction: a reform textbook, a commercially produced textbook developed in response to mathematics standards, and a traditional textbook. Its genesis is rooted in the efforts in the mathematics education community to investigate the interaction of teachers and mathematics curriculum materials, but in light of the shift to an accountability policy climate in public education. In particular, this study sought to determine …

Ever Learning, Ever Loving: Augustine On Teaching As Ministry, Ronnie P. Campbell Jr.
Eleutheria: John W. Rawlings School of Divinity Academic Journal
While most remember Augustine (354-430 AD) as theologian, exegete, and philosopher, the purpose of this essay is to consider Augustine’s legacy and ministry as teacher. After his conversion (386 AD), Augustine’s views on teaching took a turn. His theological convictions thus set the course for his views on teaching throughout the rest of his life. It is to such views on teaching that this essay seeks to examine. Therefore this essay will wrestle through Augustine’s views on the role of the teacher and the learner and the link between the two, his theological basis for teaching, and some of the …

Creating New Learning Environments Off Campus In The Faculty Of Arts: What Impact On Teaching And Learning On Campus?, Geraldine Lefoe, Rebecca M. Albury
Geraldine Lefoe
For a university in regional Australia, a new degree program on offer to a remote campus and access centres, provided a supportive environment for faculty to trial new teaching and learning methods, specifically making use of learning management system (WebCT) for aspects of communication and content. This paper examines the impact this had on the faculty, in particular at the increased usage of ICT in subjects on offer on campus and also examines other issues which were identified as problematic by faculty as they embraced innovative methods of teaching and learning.

Breaking Tradition In The Mathematics Classroom: Making Mathematics Real, Relevant, And Personal (Project), Karri Lynn Sanders
Breaking Tradition In The Mathematics Classroom: Making Mathematics Real, Relevant, And Personal (Project), Karri Lynn Sanders
Award Winners
Traditional mathematics education is failing students as many are unable to comprehend and master advanced and abstract concepts (Rakes, Valentine, McGatha, & Ronau, 2010). Struggling students, including those at Knapp Charter Academy, face a disadvantage in subsequent mathematics classes and limited opportunities in higher education and beyond. The importance of mathematics, as a gatekeeper to opportunity, makes increasing students’ success in mathematics a necessity. The mathematics failure rates coupled with the proven ineffectiveness of traditional mathematics teaching and learning additionally establish the need for meaningful reform. This project analyzes educational theory and research to determine the effect of certain reform …

A Cognitive Approach To Teaching Strategies, Emily Esch
Philosophy Faculty Publications
Our knowledge of how the mind works is growing rapidly. One area of particular interest to philosophy teachers is research on reasoning and decision making processes. I explore one model of human cognition that offers new ways of thinking about how to teach philosophical skills. The bulk of the paper is dedicated to exposition of the model and the evidence that supports it; at the end of the paper, I suggest ways these findings might be incorporated into the classroom.

Applied Creativity: Tools Toward Transformation: An Undergraduate Curriculum, Teryl Cartwright
Critical and Creative Thinking Capstones Collection
The greatest barrier to creative thinking may be the current definition. If creativity is believed to be an unconscious, undefinable process, a competitive and comparative hierarchy or even limited to specific domains, then the pursuit of creativity may be seen as an overwhelming endeavor. I believe everyone is creative, not just a few “out of the box” individuals. We are not limited to sleeping on a problem or getting into a relaxed, happy state in order to enhance creative thinking. I also believe that creative and critical thinking can be applied to teach creativity so I am offering an innovative …

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This portfolio is founded on the author’s principles of communicative teaching for Chinese language learners, which were cultivated and developed in the Master of Second Language Teaching program. The initial part of the portfolio is the teaching philosophy, which contains the author’s beliefs of teacher and student roles and effective teaching approaches in the Chinese as a foreign language classroom. The teaching philosophy is supported by three artifacts, which further clarify how to associate culture, literacy, and linguistics with language learning. The literacy artifact explains the process of Chinese and English biliteracy acquisition. The culture artifact is a comparison of …

Communicative Language Teaching, Karina C. Mora
All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023
This portfolio is a compilation of second language teaching research and
ideas put together during the author’s time as a MSLT student. It includes a
personal teaching philosophy supported by three related artifacts. It also contains
an annotated bibliography with an overview of some of the research examined
during her time in the program. Her personal teaching philosophy underscores
how communicative language teaching can help students learn language through
meaningful use. The artifacts suggest ways to implement communicative
language teaching by teaching language in content, using multimedia authentic
texts, and teaching sociolinguistics and pragmatics.
