Overdiagnosis: An Important Issue That Demands Rigour And Precision; Comment On "Medicalisation And Overdiagnosis: What Society Does To Medicine", Stacy M. Carter
Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)
Van Dijk and colleagues present three cases to illustrate and discuss the relationship between medicalisation and overdiagnosis. In this commentary, I consider each of the case studies in turn, and in doing so emphasise two main points. The first is that it is not possible to assess whether overdiagnosis is occurring based solely on incidence rates: it is necessary also to have data about the benefits and harms that are produced by diagnosis. The second is that much is at stake in discussions of overdiagnosis in particular, and that it is critical that work in this area is conceptually rigorous, …

The Language Of Non-Normative Sexuality And Genders, Emily Bolam, Samantha Jarvis
The Language Of Non-Normative Sexuality And Genders, Emily Bolam, Samantha Jarvis
Scholars Week
This project is about how asexual, intersex and transgender identities challenge normative ideas about what it means to be human. Our research primarily focused on how language used in the medical community influences societal perceptions of non-normative identities. Western culture is pervasively heteronormative, meaning that there is a narrow idea of what constitutes a “normal” human being, which is typically heterosexual and limited to a binary gender system. While society is making strides with accepting non-hetero sexual identities, there persists the notion that humans are inherently sexual beings. Asexuality, an orientation characterized by a lack of sexual attraction, challenges this …

When we die, the knowledge stored in our brains disappears. But through education, each generation of people can pass their knowledge to the next via spoken language, books and other media, and this knowledge can accumulate through the ages.

Review Of Can Education Change Society? By M.W. Apple, Connie Schaffer
Review Of Can Education Change Society? By M.W. Apple, Connie Schaffer
Teacher Education Faculty Publications
Can education change society? The question is simple, and Michael W. Apple’s response is an irrefutable, yes. However, a broader exegesis is needed because the issues confounding this question are steeped in powerful political forces from both the right and left. Within the pages of Can Education Change Society?, Apple continues his long-time professional exposition regarding education’s role in challenging these and other hegemonic systems.

Educational Considerations
Upward mobility is a prized aspect of the American dream based upon the belief that those from humble origins can climb the socioeconomic ladder through education and hard work. Increasingly, postsecondary education is an essential component of that dream.

Computer Literacies And Australian Indigenous Communities: Sharing, Scaffolding, And Supporting In An Online Learning Environment, Michelle Eady, Irina Verenikina, Wendy Nielsen
Michelle Eady
Current reports indicate literacy rates among adult Indigenous Australians remain low despite years of improvement initiatives. Synchronous learning technology has potential to provide literacy and training to Indigenous learners living in remote communities. Although considerable research has been devoted to the area of internet-based learning in general, there is less research in the area of online synchronous learning opportunities for remote Indigenous learners. This paper offers insights gained from a unique research project that empowered members of a remote Indigenous community through a hands-on opportunity with synchronous technology where learners shared their strengths, and saw potential for their own futures.

Editorial
The idea of a Special Issue of the International Journal of Psychophysiology focusing on research "down under" emerged in 2012 from discussions between the Society President (Robert Barry), the journal Publisher (Shamus O'Reilly), and the Editor-in-Chief (Connie Duncan). It was greeted with enthusiasm by the Society Executive, who set up an Editorial Committee to progress the project, beginning with establishment of timelines, evaluations of the conference abstracts accepted for presentation at the 2012 meeting of the Australasian Society for Psychophysiology, ASP2012, and critical scrutiny of each conference presentation. Formal invitations for selected authors to contribute to the Special Issue …

The Tower Builders: A Consideration Of Stem, Stse And Ethics In Science Education, Astrid Steele, Christine R. Brew, Brenda R. Beatty
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
The call for the integration of ethical considerations in the teaching of science is now firmly on the agenda. Taking as illustrative a science lesson in a pre-service teacher class, the authors consider the roles of STSE (science, technology, society and environment) and the increasingly influential heavily funded STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) education initiatives. The origins and foci of both initiatives are discussed, as are their disparate ontological foundations. The use of Habermas’ knowledge theories in conjunction with ethical frameworks is posited as a way of considering both STSE and STEM perspectives and their implications for strengthening science …

Contract Research, Universities And The 'Knowledge Society': Back To The Future, Noel Castree
Faculty of Social Sciences - Papers (Archive)
Many chapters in this book focus on contract research (hereafter CR), but mine differs from these in three respects. First, rather than focus on CR in its own right I want to situate it in a much wider landscape of knowledge production, circulation and consumption. My reason for doing so is simple: we cannot possibly form a view on the why and wherefore of CR unless we understand the broader epistemic context in which it currently exists. As we'll see, in this context CR appears as just one instance of a widespread shift to seeing knowledge as a means to …

Institutional Transformation: A Case Study Of An Urban Midwestern University, Jane M. Grassadonia
Theses and Dissertations
This study is a case study of an institutional transformational change effort in an urban research university. The study's focus is on the impact of The Milwaukee Idea on faculty and students as the soul of the university. Literature on transformational change in higher education focuses on the processes for launching this type of change and the role of formal change leaders. Less is known about the impact of transformational change on faculty and students. Relevant literature on change and institutional culture informed this study, including Kotter (1996), Wilber (1998), Cutright (2001), Peterson and Spencer (2000), Kezar and Eckel(2000), and …

Ethics For Industrial Technology Majors: Need And Plan Of Action, Kurt A. Rosentrater, R. Balamuralikrishma
Kurt A. Rosentrater
The recent introduction of sessions dedicated to “Industrial Technology” in the annual ASEE conference is testimony that this discipline has gained its rightful place in the company of engineering and engineering technology. This new level of partnership and collaboration between engineering and technology programs promises to be a step in the right direction for society at large. Engineering and technology majors both supplement and complement each other’s knowledge and skills and it is crucial for educators to build bridges of active interaction. This paper takes aim at one specific as well as basic need in teamwork and interdisciplinary projects – …

On Friday, May 7, 2004 the front page of The New York Times contained two photographs and a headline: "From Picture of Pride to Symbol of Abuse" (Dao, 2004, p.1). In the top photograph Lynndie R. England appears in 2003, smiling, standing in a relaxed family setting, and wearing a blue" Authentic USA" hooded sweatshirt with red and white lettering. Until early May that photo had been displayed in the Mineral County West Virginia Courthouse with other photographs of local soldiers stationed in Iraq.

Beliefs Of Science Teachers Toward The Teaching Of Science/Technological/Social Issues: Are We Addressing National Standards?, Jon E. Pedersen, Samuel Totten
Faculty Publications: Department of Teaching, Learning and Teacher Education
As science educators, we must view the changing nature of society brought on by technology and the global nature of society as an impetus to reexamine the nature of science instruction. We have been bestowed with the responsibility to educate students on a variety of topics that less than two decades ago did not exist. Many of these social issues are controversial in nature and are directly linked to the local, regional, national, and global communities in which we exist. However, including these social issues in the extant curriculum of science has, at best, been limited. This is true even …

The Perception Of Non-Perception: Lessons For Art Education With Downcast Eyes (Part One: Trompe-L’Oeil And The Question Of Radical Evil), Jan Jagodzinski
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The Roman historian Pliny recounts a story that occurred during Periclean Athens. I will utilize this story, as a trope to undertake an interrogation of perception as it is commonly understood and currently practiced by art educators in schools. In order to deconstruct vision/blindness, or the perception/non-perception binary, I have examined the psychoanalytic paradigm of Jacques Lacan. His current interpreters provided the conceptual tools for such an undertaking. Given that the question of representation has become a key sign-post of postmodernism, art educators must conceptualize a trajectory for itself in the 21st century. Part One of such a trajectory questions …
Art Education And The Promotion Of Intercultural Understanding, F. Graeme Chalmers
Art Education And The Promotion Of Intercultural Understanding, F. Graeme Chalmers
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
The comparative study of art, of response to art, and the production of art forms which matter can help us to understand each other. Art has always been a powerful force in shaping our vision of the world. We need to understand each other's vision and keep our own alive. We need to combat any art-for-art's-sake attitudes that may be entrenched in schools because it is a rather peculiar notion of art and one that deters a full understanding of the role of art in a variety of contexts and cultures. In contrast, art educators who view art as a …

The Sociological Implications Of Henry Schaefer-Simmern’S Theory And Research Leading Toward An Integral Theory Of Art Education, Roy E. Abrahamson
Journal of Social Theory in Art Education
Henry Schaefer-Simmern was fully aware of the sociological implications of his work. His theory of visual, artistic conceiving stated that people possess an inherent ability to transform their perceptions into holistic (gestalt) formations expressed as works of art. They have this ability in varying degrees regardless of differences of sex, race, chronological age (above the motor scribble age), lQ (above 47), socio-economic status, creed, and geographic location. He believed that society should encourage the development and expression of this ability and that those of its members who are artistically active (whether children, adolescents, or adults) can uplift and transform society …
