A Comparison Of Leadership Potential Between Physical Education And Recreation Majors At Utah State University, Karolyn Carroll

The purpose of this study was to compare the leadership potential of students from upper level division students majoring in Physical Education as compared to students majoring in Recreation. Two psychological tests were utilized to measure leadership potential between these groups. They were the Leadership Ability Evaluation and the Leadership Q-Sort Test, which yielded data in 12 variables.

Analysis of this data revealed that there was significant difference at the .05 level in three of the twelve variables. A comparison of all means for the two tests favored the Recreation majors over the Physical Education majors in leadership potential.

Student understanding and use of alcohol and tobacco at Utah State University was studied under the following areas: specific knowledge as it relates to smoking and health and drinking and health, student opinions and attitudes toward smoking and drinking, smoking and drinking experiences, the influence of certain factors on smoking and drinking status, and source and credibility of tobacco and alcohol information.

Thirteen hundred seventy-eight students were sampled with the use of a questionnaire. It included 567 freshmen, 274 sophomores, 345 juniors, and 192 seniors. The sample covered each of the eight colleges at the University.

Student understanding and use of tobacco was studied under the following specific areas: specific knowledge as it relates to smoking and health; student opinions and attitudes toward smoking; smoking experience; and the influence of certain factors on smoking status.

About 700 students were sampled with the use of a questionnaire. The number of students was divided about equally among four schools and between boys and girls at each grade level, grades seven through twelve. The purpose of this study is to review the literature of the past twenty years as it relates to tort liability of school districts, boards of education, and teachers, with special emphasis on the field of physical education and related activities such as intramurals and inter-scholastic competition.

Recent legislation passed by the Utah legislature is cited. In certain instances this will be contrasted with older laws and practices which still prevail in a good number of states.

All of the high schools in Region One of the Utah State Athletic Association were surveyed for this study. Region One is located in Northern Utah and included all the high schools in Cache, Box Elder Counties, and one high school in Weber County.

This Region is made up of urban, suburban, and rural districts. Several central towns comprise the greatest part of the total population, but many pupils are transported from outlying areas to consolidated schools in these centers.
