Research indicates that school-aged children today are less motivated to read for fun than in previous generations, opting instead to indulge in digital media and online gaming. Studies also demonstrate that small amounts of free reading without follow-up assessments have linguistic, academic, and socio-emotional benefits. This school improvement plan was driven by the developer’s success with guided self-selected reading (GSSR) and self-selected reading (SSR) in her classroom and a desire to assist other educators in the process of creating their own programs to optimize language acquisition, build enthusiasm for reading, and guide students to become autonomous readers.

The purpose of this action research study was to determine if homework completion had an effect on how students performed on summative assessments. This action research study was conducted in a high school classroom in Northwest Iowa. An Algebra and Algebra 2 class were used during this research process. Quantitative data was collected on homework completion and summative assessment scores for three consecutive chapters covered in each respective class. The results of this study showed while there is a positive correlation between the two variables, no significant conclusions could be made from the collected data.

Student reading proficiency lags grade-level expectations in the majority of the United States. Much research has demonstrated the moderating impact of student motivation on reading scores. The purpose of this action research was to study the effects of physical activity on reading motivation and reading comprehension, with a special focus on readers at risk for reading deficiencies as identified by FAST testing. The purpose of this action research project was to determine what motivational strategy was more effective with elementary students between intrinsic and extrinsic motivation. Students in a special education setting were taught a motivational strategy for a month prior to it being implemented and data collected. Then the data was collected through qualitative observations and quantitative scores based off the students specific disruptions. Analysis of the data collected suggests that while both strategies are an effective way to promote positive behavior, intrinsic motivation is the more effective form of motivation used in the classroom.

The purpose of this action research study was to determine if there is a connection between the implementation of choice in the classroom and students' motivation to read. Research-based literacy framework and a choice model were used over an eight week period of time. Qualitative data was collected at the beginning and the end of the study in the form of surveys. Analysis of the data concluded that kindergarten students when given opportunities for choice in the classroom their motivation to read increased.

The purpose of this action research project was to determine if incorporating technology into a kindergarten-writing program could increase their motivation and attitudes, and hence improve their writing abilities. Two types of technology were introduced to the writing program; one being an electronic portfolio to share their work and the second was a digital story writing software. Data was collected by use of attitude surveys, observational notes, and student writing samples. Analysis of the data suggests that students were more engaged during the writing time and were very motivated to write if they could publish it to their online portfolio.

The purpose of this action research project was to determine if there is a correlation between the use of technology in the seventh grade social studies classroom and the motivation for learning. A combination of technology enriched lessons and traditional textbook and pencil lessons were used over a period of nearly two months. Data was collected through quantitative surveys and qualitative observations and responses from students. Analysis of the data collected suggests that student motivation and joy of learning increases as technology is used in the classroom.
