Scientific Bulletin of Namangan State University

Nowadays, knowing English is becoming an integral part of our lives. English is the language of international communication. At the same time, modern educational standards promote the formation of communicative competence as the goal of foreign language teaching. In recent times, Methodists have been paying more and more attention to the problem of listening comprehension. Although there is theoretical research in the study of this process, the practical application of some teaching methods is still insufficient. In this article, we will focus on the importance of listening comprehension in language teaching and ways to use ICT effectively to develop it.

Using The Question-Answer Relationship Strategy To Improve Listening Comprehension In Young Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Lisa A. Phalen

Communication Disorders & Special Education Theses & Dissertations

A well-established research base indicates that many children diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) experience deficits in reading comprehension skills. There is currently limited research which examines the relation between the communication and language impairments in ASD and emergent literacy skills in early childhood. Listening comprehension has been identified as one emergent literacy skill closely linked to reading comprehension development. The purpose of the study is to examine the effects of the question-answer relationship strategy (QAR) and QAR cue cards as a shared book reading intervention package on the listening comprehension skills of children with ASD. A single-subject concurrent multiple-baseline ...

Additional research should ...

Spanish Listening Comprehension Test Development Project: Considering Learner L2 Listening Comprehension In The Course Placement Equation, Jennifer Elise Musgrove Jan 2017

Spanish Listening Comprehension Test Development Project: Considering Learner L2 Listening Comprehension In The Course Placement Equation, Jennifer Elise Musgrove

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Second language (L2) placement exams utilized towards course placement decisions at higher-level educational institutions are considered “high-stakes” relative to the impact that the assessment outcome has on the individual student level as well consequences at the institutional level. Therefore, providing reliable second language assessments that effectively determine L2 learner language proficiency can lower course placement error issues. I argue that assessing a learner’s L2 listening comprehension is an integral part of the learner’s L2 experience within the Target Language Use (TLU) and that it could improve course placement accuracy. Furthermore, I argue for a listening construct that includes ...

Effects Of Listening Strategies Instruction On Listening Comprehension, Oral Proficiency, And Metacognition On Second Language Learners, Ana C. Zobler May 2010

Effects Of Listening Strategies Instruction On Listening Comprehension, Oral Proficiency, And Metacognition On Second Language Learners, Ana C. Zobler

Education Dissertations

Second language programs in the 21st century need to provide students with the linguistic and cultural skills they need to communicate proficiently in a global community. Therefore, curriculum and instruction must focus on developing all four skills needed for language acquisition: listening, reading, speaking and writing. However, the skill of listening has often been overlooked in the second language classroom; teachers have assumed that language learners know how to listen effectively and little attention has been paid to teaching the skill. A strategy-based approach could give second language instructors the tools necessary to provide learners with the knowledge, support and ...

Adult Esl Oral Reading Fluency And Silent Reading Comprehension, Kristin Lems

Dissertations

A descriptive study of second language adults studying ESL at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels in a post-secondary academic program revealed that their oral reading fluency had a significant, low-to-moderate correlation with scores on a measure of silent reading comprehension. The correlation was slightly stronger for measures of accuracy than speed, and strongest for miscue ratio. The correlation increased as proficiency level increased. Among different first language groups, the correlation was highest for Hispanic learners, and lowest for Chinese. Furthermore, all fluency measures correlated better with a listening measure than with the silent reading comprehension measure. When a system ...

A Series Of Dialogues For Foreign Students Who Have Just Arrived In The United States, Stephen B. Gelman

MA TESOL Collection

From my experience with beginning or intermediate students who have just arrived in the States, I have found that they lack confidence in dealing with real situations outside the ESL classroom and in interacting with Americans because of their inability to speak or understand normal spoken English. They need some preparation and encouragement to ease the cultural shock they will encounter.

In this project, I have used a series of dialogues to prepare the students for the most common situations they will experience almost immediately, such as opening a checking account or eating in a restaurant. Another purpose of these ...
