Kansas Library Association College and University Libraries Section Proceedings
An activity often reserved for children, coloring books for adults rose from hipster trend to global phenomenon beginning in 2013. Adults flocked to the activity for a variety of reasons, including stress relief, socialization, a way to unplug from technology or even as a way to gain social status by appearing trendy. Participants reported enjoying the tactile, interactive nature of the books as a respite from constant screen time. Coloring books became big business for craft suppliers and bookstores by 2015. Coloring books shot to the top of the Best Sellers list on Amazon and were prominently displayed in book …

Scholarly Piracy Vs Scholarly Activism: Where Sci-Hub Fits In The Information Literacy Landscape, Fred Rascoe, Laura Burtle, Mariann Burright, Melanie Kowalski
Scholarly Piracy Vs Scholarly Activism: Where Sci-Hub Fits In The Information Literacy Landscape, Fred Rascoe, Laura Burtle, Mariann Burright, Melanie Kowalski
Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy
In recent months, the site Sci-Hub (https://sci-hub.io/) has gained attention for providing easy access to any scholarly journal article, without regard to the user’s subscription status, and without requiring payment. For articles that are not already open access, this activity infringes on the copyright in the articles, generally held by publishers, and, for articles obtained via a library subscription, is presumptively a breach of the license between the library and the publisher. Regardless, this activity has proven to be a popular and expedient way to break through access barriers to important scholarly information for students and faculty, especially those in …

Roesch Library Staff Presentations
Library staff employed in information technology departments are often seen as support staff, only providing services when something breaks. But what more can library IT staff do to support the mission of their libraries? In this presentation we will explore why library IT staff should maximize their ability to work across various library departments to collaboratively design new library services rather than being relegated to support staff. We will also explore how library IT staff may challenge traditional bureaucratic organization structures to lead change efforts.
Much More Than Storage: Re-Positioning The Repository As A Cornerstone Of Campus Collaboration, Amanda Makula, Connie Ghinazzi
Much More Than Storage: Re-Positioning The Repository As A Cornerstone Of Campus Collaboration, Amanda Makula, Connie Ghinazzi
Library and Information Science: Faculty Scholarship & Creative Works
“Repository” belies the dynamic potential of the IR. Much more than a publishing mechanism for campus scholarship and an archive of college history, it is an opportunity to partner with nearly every entity across campus in order to advance the institution’s mission and goals, to build community by uniting disparate groups around a common purpose, and to call attention to the library’s unique ability to facilitate campus-wide collaboration. More specifically, the IR can play an important role in recruiting new students, strengthening institutional engagement among alumni, enhancing partnerships with the surrounding community, and more. But to come to fruition, these …

Librarians And Student Affairs Professionals As Collaborators For Student Learning And Success, Dallas Long
Librarians And Student Affairs Professionals As Collaborators For Student Learning And Success, Dallas Long
Theses and Dissertations
Increased accountability in higher education is increasingly compelling librarians to demonstrate their impact on student learning and student success. To do so, they are encouraged to collaborate with student affairs professionals to improve students' experiences. However, the literature suggests librarians lack formal, structured partnerships with student affairs professionals, and that librarians and student affairs professionals are largely unfamiliar with each other's roles in student learning. They may have narrow or inaccurate perceptions of each other, and lack meaningful ways to collaborate. This study explored librarians' and student affairs professionals' perceptions of each other's roles in student learning and success. Additionally, …

This article contends that information literacy should be considered a standard component in a 21st century liberal education. It explores the role of libraries and librarians within this context while contrasting the "Google it" mentality with deep researching and critical thinking about information and the information-seeking process, both in libraries and in the free online environment.
