Effective communication between ab initio flight students and their instructors is critical for efficient flight training; additionally, clear radio communications between student pilots and air traffic controllers is imperative for smooth and incident-free airport operations. During the Fall 2019 semester, Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University (ERAU) at Daytona Beach implemented a new semi-intensive eight-week course to improve the communicative skills of its international students who speak English as a second language.

This article documents the development of a bilingual English/Mandarin library guide for the Chinese student population of Fort Hays State University. Growing international student populations across the country mean that many university libraries need to customize services for unique student groups. At Forsyth Library of Fort Hays State University we serve over 3600 students from China. We sought to develop further services for this student group. Please note that throughout this paper, when referring to “Chinese language,” we are specifically referencing Standard Mandarin, which is predominant among our Chinese students.

Internationalization of higher education is a major characteristic of China's higher education policy. Accordingly, the Chinese government is fervently encouraging the spread of Chinese language and culture through Confucius Institutes, student exchange programs, recruitment of international students, and international collaborations.
