Phase Two of this project, conducted during the 2021 academic year, repeated an A-B-A withdrawal design to rotate (across terms 2, 3, and 4) the furniture in 4 primary school classrooms from innovative to traditional furniture arrangements.¹ A fifth classroom with innovative furniture was used as a control. Three-weekly repeated measures were taken across the terms of: (1) characteristics impact students’ engagement, namely creative thinking, peer support and risk taking, (2) teachers’ observed actions in their classrooms, and (3) photographs by students of their preferred furniture item/s, with annotations explaining this preference. Kentucky public charter school law was introduced in 2017, the purpose of the new innovative schools were to close the achievement gap among the education system within the state. Charter schools are new-age schools that have a smaller class size, use differentiated instructional strategies that integrate technology to promote engagement, which in turn increases student growth and success. Advantages of charter schools within other states include differentiated environment, culture, and performance. The well-respected Buffalo State College International Center for Studies in Creativity (ICSC) offers undergraduate and graduate degrees in face-to-face and online formats but has taught its online courses using predominantly traditional design formats. For their master’s degree project, graduate students David Yates and Dylan Gafarian hoped to lead the department in a new direction by creating and teaching an online game version of CRS 559--Principles in Creative Problem Solving, which is the first course in both the Certificate and Master’s Degree in Creativity and Change Leadership. Nearly 47% of first-time California community college students are enrolled in remedial English coursework (Student Success, 2015). Further, California high school dropout rates are at 11% due to “school-related reasons…implying a lack of engagement and lack of perceived relevance” in curriculum (Gottfried & Plasman, 2017, p. 30). Blind Date Poetry: Introducing Poetry To Today’S High School Students, Amy Rottmann

Journal of Educational Research and Practice

This study examined an early college high school English teacher's instructional method of introducing poetry through Blind Date Poetry. Blind Date Poetry was created by the teacher to introduce her students to 25 poems in a 90-min class session. The study was to find if the poetry introduction engaged and motivated students to learn poetry. The collected data showed that students preferred autonomy, quick decision-making, and personal interest when being introduced to poetry. Also, the instructional method increased students’ engagement and motivation to learn about the poems they had chosen.

This presentation reports the findings from our investigation of the professors designated as the most innovative users of technology at our university. After seeking nominations from department heads, we selected thirty-five of the most successful and innovative professors as case studies. After interviewing these cases, and in some instances observing their classes, we identified five major patterns that represented the positive impacts technology was having on their instruction. These patterns were evident in several cases across many different disciplines, indicating they might be generalizable to many different situations and contexts.
