Patriotism And Democratic Education, Richard Dagger

Whether patriotism has a valuable part to play in the educational system of a democratic society is now a highly contentious matter. This chapter argues that it does, principally because such a society is a kind of cooperative practice that requires its members to enact, enforce, and – in most cases – obey the laws that govern their self-governing polity. Democracies rely on rules, and especially the rule of law, to provide the reasonably clear expectations necessary to coordinate public activities and to overcome collective-action problems. Professors, like the students around whom we structure our lives, don't follow the same rhythms and schedules of most people. People in the academy, whatever their age, tend to follow unusual hours, work in cycles of desperately hard labor and periods of less desperation, tend to work in places other than a central office, tend to spend considerable amounts of time alone or in intense conversation with a few people, tend not to work in terms reflected in billable hours or tightly scheduled appointments. The intent of the writer was to trace developmental trends in the concepts and practices of guidance in the State of Virginia. The first school in Danville was established by a Presbyterian minister, the Reverend Mr. J. Matthews, in the year 1802. This school lasted only twelve months and was followed by a procession of others which soon perished for one reason or another. In 1823 the Danville Male Academy was organized and became the forerunner of the modern public education system of Danville. Soon after, a number or schools were established for "females." This study is concerned with only one, the school that is now Averett College.
