The Impact Of A College Community Service Laboratory On Students' Personal, Social, And Cognitive Outcomes, Dwight Giles Jr., Janet Eyler
The Impact Of A College Community Service Laboratory On Students' Personal, Social, And Cognitive Outcomes, Dwight Giles Jr., Janet Eyler
Higher Education
This exploratory study attempts to· answer the question: can a required service-learning experience of limited intensity and duration have an impact on the development of college students as participating citizens of their community? Students who provided community service as part of a one credit "community service laboratory" showed a significant increase in their belief that people can make a difference, that they should be involved in community service and particularly in leadership and political influence, and in their commitment to perform volunteer service the following semester. They also became less likely to blame social service clients for their misfortunes and …

BESTNET was established in the early 1980's, as an effort to link universities on both sides of the U.S.- Mexico border through microwave, satellite and cable television technologies. In the late 1980's BESTNET focused primarily on the development of asynchronous computer mediated learning and teaching in an internationally networked virtual environment. For the past six years (1990's) BESTNET has strengthened its binational ties and continued its "high tech" focus through the development of active or vibrant model technology which is assisting in the creation of an on-line binational university setting that is "borderless" (albeit, seamless to the user). Today, this …

The Changing College Classroom: A View From Cart, Glenn Pavlicek, Sandra Faiman-Silva, Maxine Rawlins, Shu-Chen Tu
Bridgewater Review
Higher education, like many institutions in the United States, is undergoing profound change. At Bridgewater, faculty members are increasingly becoming aware that societal issues, computerization and the demands of a highly competitive economy require a reevaluation of the classroom and the process of learning. At a conference sponsored by the Center for the Advancement of Research and Teaching in May, four Bridgewater faculty members and a librarian joined in a panel discussion to offer their perspectives on “the changing college classroom.”

The Emergence Of The New American College, Daniel R. Denicola
The Emergence Of The New American College, Daniel R. Denicola
Philosophy Faculty Publications
The story of the "New American College" is about the development of a new kind of institution embodying a set of ideals which may resonate across all of higher education. It begins, however, with the humble matter of institutional taxonomy. How we classify our schools and colleges may seem an unexciting issue, but our classification systems reveal our assumptions, our expectations, and ultimately our values. Recall that a conceptual revolution, a breakthrough, is often presaged by an accumulation of classification problems, an accretion of anomalies, a proliferation of misfits. [excerpt]
