Second Annual University of Arkansas Teaching and Learning Symposium: Sharing Teaching Ideas
As a tool that allows for the creation of a geospatial multimedia story, ArcGIS StoryMaps facilitates students’ learning both inside and outside of the classroom. This interactive software offers students the opportunity to express their understanding of an input and elaborate upon it in original and personal ways using various sources. In this presentation, we will illustrate how ArcGIS can be used successfully in an advanced Italian language class to engage students with a fable by Somali-Italian acclaimed writer Igiaba Scego, Prestami le ali. Examples of scaffolded …

Elementary New Testament Greek, Owen Ewald
Faculty Open Access Books
This open-access textbook helps students learn to read New Testament Greek at the elementary level. It includes clear, concise explanations of grammar and syntax, helpful examples, and essential vocabulary, with no assumption of previous language study, and it does not require accents for most forms. At the end of each of its twenty chapters, students will find short Greek-language episodes from the life of a fictional early Christian family of Jewish ancestry, short readings from the Greek New Testament and Septuagint, and review/homework exercises that can help reinforce new concepts and vocabulary. This book can help students prepare to read …
Student Attitudes Towards English Grammar, Evalyn H. Bassett
Student Attitudes Towards English Grammar, Evalyn H. Bassett
Honors Theses
The literature on English grammar is mostly on its history, standardization, educational implementations, how ideologies shape its frequency of usage, and how it is perceived by students learning English as a second language. This study seeks to address a gap in the literature that reviews the attitudes of college students towards English grammar as their first language and how these attitudes correlate with any past experience with English grammar up to this point. To gain a better understanding of student’s attitudes towards English grammar, an online mixed-methods survey was distributed to graduate and undergraduate students in all departments of the …

Predicting Language Performance From Narrative Language Samples, Kimberly A. Murphy, Alisha P. Springle, Mollee J. Sultani, Autumn Mcilraith, Language And Reading Research Consortium (Larrc)
Communication Disorders & Special Education Faculty Publications
Purpose: Analysis of narrative language samples is a recommended clinical practice in the assessment of children’s language skills, but we know little about how results from such analyses relate to overall oral language ability across the early school years. We examined the relations between language sample metrics from a short narrative retell, collected in kindergarten, and an oral language factor in grades kindergarten through 3. Our specific questions were to determine the extent to which metrics from narrative language sample analysis are concurrently related to language in kindergarten and predict language through Grade 3. Method: Participants were a sample …

Difficulties In Grammar Acquisition In Esl Classes, Rano Norbekova
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
This article is devoted to the study of the most pressing problems of teaching foreign languages, particularly grammar at the present stage, as well as the main problems associated with this. In this paper, we will review only a few of the problems of teaching grammar of English, which are central to the problems related to various aspects of modern teaching. In modern conditions, knowledge of foreign languages is becoming increasingly important, since we cannot, in the context of globalization, exist in isolation from the rest of the world. The article reveals the features and problems of teaching grammar, such …
Silent Film: A Visual Narrative For Developing Linguistic Competence, Patricia George
Silent Film: A Visual Narrative For Developing Linguistic Competence, Patricia George
Open Educational Resources
Visual narratives in silent films are an effective method for developing linguistic competence in English language education and are equally constructive in developing critical thinking skills across disciplines. “Silent film, more than any other film property, capitalizes on ESL students’ visual literacy, using it as both a foundation and a catalyst for honing the verbal language skills that are key to acquiring and articulating complex knowledge in English” (Kasper and Singer, 2001). Silent films rely on the power of vivid, interactive visual imagery to depict personal struggles, character interactions, and plot development. This medium grabs the attention of ESL students …

Chunking Language For Efl Classroоm Learners, Makhliyo Umarkulova
Mental Enlightenment Scientific-Methodological Journal
In this article it is examined how Chunking Language is perceived by online EFL students, and analyzed how this strategy enriches students’ vocabulary based on their ideas and experiences in online classes. The study used a qualitative research methodology through thematic analysis, where descriptive analysis was performed on the responses. Interview guide questions were used to explore participants’ insights and ideas on how to use the strategy. The findings showed that most EFL students fully understand the importance of vocabulary, but it was very difficult to use them in sentences. In addition, participants adopted Chunking Language as a life strategy …

The Importance Of Grammar For English Learners And English Teachers In The Coming Decade, Brian White
The Importance Of Grammar For English Learners And English Teachers In The Coming Decade, Brian White
New Jersey English Journal
The teaching of traditional grammar in traditional ways is out of favor, and for very good reason. Still, in the coming decade, teachers of English will need to "know their grammar" and be able to explain it to a burgeoning number of English Language Learners (ELLs).

Preparing Tomorrow’S Leaders For Yesterday: Ai And Standardized Grammar Assessment, Jason C. Toncic
New Jersey English Journal
Following breakthroughs in machine learning over the past decade, artificial intelligence (AI) has been integrated into major aspects of schooling. Comparison Of Motor-Enhanced And Visual-Enhanced Interventions For Grammar In Young Children With Developmental Language Disorder, Alisha P. Springle
Comparison Of Motor-Enhanced And Visual-Enhanced Interventions For Grammar In Young Children With Developmental Language Disorder, Alisha P. Springle
Communication Disorders & Special Education Theses & Dissertations
Up to 7.6% of children demonstrate a developmental language disorder (DLD), which can persist through adulthood, causing difficulty with academic achievement, social relationships, and financial stability. Grammar development, as a hallmark of DLD, is an important area of need for these children. Existing grammar interventions do not clearly distinguish the sensory input techniques that meet these children’s neurobiological instructional needs. This adapted alternating treatment design study implemented intervention using systematic paired visual and verbal and systematic paired motor, i.e. standardized gestures, and verbal sensory input techniques. A moderate-strong functional relation between intervention techniques using motor supports on grammatical outcomes in …
Beyond The Red Pen: A Functional Grammar Approach To Evaluating The Written Language Of Deaf Students, Jennifer Kilpatrick, Kimberly A. Wolbers
Beyond The Red Pen: A Functional Grammar Approach To Evaluating The Written Language Of Deaf Students, Jennifer Kilpatrick, Kimberly A. Wolbers
Theory and Practice in Teacher Education Publications and Other Works
Deaf students often differ from their hearing peers in written language development. Providing developmentally appropriate instruction is ideal, yet current methods of writing assessment do not provide teachers with sufficient information regarding the written language (i.e., syntactic) development of deaf students. In this research, we use a Systemic Functional Grammar (SFG) approach to language analysis to provide teachers with a new way to evaluate deaf students’ writing. This project consisted of two studies. The first study focused on determining whether SFG analysis could be helpful for teachers of the deaf. The second study focused on mapping a trajectory of the …

The Case For Grammar: What Preservice Teachers Need To Know About Metalinguistic Awareness, Aimee Schoonmaker, Kerry L. Purmensky
Journal of English Learner Education
The present study focused on preservice teachers’ grammar knowledge and its importance for their future students’ understanding and use of language, particularly English Learners. This quasi-experimental one-group pretest-posttest study investigated the grammar knowledge of preservice teachers who were enrolled in an undergraduate applied linguistics course at an urban university in the southern United States. The results confirmed prior research which found that preservice teachers are not knowledgeable enough about English grammar when explaining sentence level errors. This study demonstrated that preservice teachers’ basic understanding of English grammar can be increased in a short time, particularly in the recognition of simple …
