Diversity Climate Report: 2010-2011 Heri Faculty Survey, Western Washington University. Equal Opportunity Office
Office of Institutional Effectiveness
To further Western’s commitment to supporting diverse faculty, and in response to the priorities of campus groups, including the Faculty Senate, Minority Employee Council, and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Advocacy Council, Western contracted with the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI) at UCLA to conduct their nationally recognized Faculty Survey. Western selected HERI due to its highly respected work developing and administering campus surveys and its ability to provide benchmark data from peer institutions who participated in the 2010-2011 Faculty Survey. Western’s Equal Opportunity (EO) Office facilitated the HERI Faculty Survey and served as the primary point of contact …

In 1999, the Faculty Senate approved Western's participation in a national survey of faculty conducted by the Higher Education Research Institute (HERI). Western's preliminary analysis of the data revealed that Westerns full-time female faculty reported experiencing sexual harassment at a higher percentage than did full-time female faculty at peer institutions--with each cohort made up approximately 62% tenured faculty and 38% non-tenured faculty. It was also noted that Western's female faculty were more likely to report feeling subtle discrimination than female faculty at peer institutions and less likely to agree that women faculty are treated fairly. Limited by the survey data …

INTRODUCTION Section One: Faculty At the request of the new University Librarian, Western's Office of Survey Research (OSR) and Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing (OiART) worked with the library's faculty and staff to conduct a series of surveys focusing on library resources and services. Drafts of this report were reviewed by library personnel and their comments and insights were extremely valuable. These surveys were intended to provide a base of information to help guide an in-depth assessment and planning effort aimed at improving Western's library. Indeed, "Western Washington University Libraries: Organizational Directions and Major Strategies: I998- 2003" was published …

Departmental Advising Patterns And Recommendations For Change, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark, Carl Simpson
Office of Institutional Effectiveness
Executive Summary: Departmental/college advising is coming to occupy one of the several spotlights directed by feedback from students and by higher education accountability. For several years, alumni have been particularly critical of departmental advising. This year, advising has been put forward as one accountability measure and as one means to enhance performance on several others. To contextualize discussions of departmental advising and to provide a first round of input from departments, the chairs or advisors of thirty departments/colleges described their advising practices and gave their input regarding future directions for advising, during Fall, 1997. Departments' advising practices are tremendously varied. …

Faculty Judgments Concerning Expanding Western Washington University's Summer Session, Linda D. (Linda Darlene) Clark, Joseph E. Trimble, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Carl Simpson
Office of Institutional Effectiveness
During the Winter quarter, 1996, nearly three-quarters of the faculty (70.4%) responded to a questionnaire concerning the advisability of expanding the WWU Summer Session to constitute "year-round" operation. Generally, the faculty supports the idea, although only if the program is high-quality and fully supported, if the program operates with few temporary Summer-only faculty, and if pay for Summer Session increases. Most faculty, 71.7%, say Western "definitely" or "probably" should pursue an enlarged Summer Session, while only 16.4% oppose such a move. Support for expanding Summer Session is, however, limited by two concerns. First, only about 45% of academic year faculty …

Should Western change to some form of semester system? At the request of the Faculty Senate, this question, among many others, was asked of Western faculty in the Faculty Survey Concerning Semester versus Quarter Schedules, administered by the Office of Survey Research and analyzed in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Assessment and Testing. This Focus publication reports findings from that survey, conducted during the fall quarter of 1995.
