Inquiry, Art And Consummatory Experience: A Deweyan Account Of The Instrumental And Aesthetic Modes In Human Well-Being, Eric A. Evans
Inquiry, Art And Consummatory Experience: A Deweyan Account Of The Instrumental And Aesthetic Modes In Human Well-Being, Eric A. Evans
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This dissertation argues that a Deweyan reconstruction of philosophical theories of human well-being is needed. While philosophical interest about human well-being has existed for millennia, significant interest in such theories among philosophers has re-emerged during the past twenty-five years. During this same time there has been a resurgence of interest in the work of John Dewey. His critique of the “philosophical fallacy” is used to examine the legitimacy and value of the theories of human well-being offered by Plato and L.W. Sumner in which the target for evaluation is “happiness” and the criterion is, respectively, P-justice or preference fulfillment. It …

Assessing Edad Candidate's Leadership Growth And Perceptions: Ethical Principles And Acting Fairly, Jeanne L. Surface
Assessing Edad Candidate's Leadership Growth And Perceptions: Ethical Principles And Acting Fairly, Jeanne L. Surface
Educational Leadership Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Moral and ethical leadership has evolved over the years, and while early standards were often religious in nature, many standards remain. Every year principals are terminated for immoral activities, failure to assume leadership obligations, or breaches of ethics. Because of the critical role that principals play in school and community leadership, preparation programs should teach and assess principal candidates' dispositions such as fairness and integrity. This paper is an analysis of educational administration student growth using an electronic portfolio system to measure self-perceptions of readiness to implement the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards and self-perceptions of dispositions of …

Raising The Bar: Ethics Education For Quality Teachers, Helen J. Boon
Raising The Bar: Ethics Education For Quality Teachers, Helen J. Boon
Australian Journal of Teacher Education
Since the 1970s an ‘ethics boom’ has occurred to counter the disappearance of ethics education from tertiary institutions. This ‘boom’ appears to be absent from teacher education programs in Australia and the United States.
Given persistent calls to enhance teacher quality this is problematic because quality teaching is inexorably linked to teachers’ beliefs, values and professional ethics.
This case study, conducted in a regional Australian university, was designed to document examples of ethical dilemmas faced by pre-service and practising teachers, to explore pre-service teachers’ perceptions of ethics education and to examine the BEd course curriculum for ethics subjects across the …

Ethics In In Research And Publication Process: Panel, Luca Gnan, Susan R. Madsen, Jim Davis
Susan R. Madsen
With the fairly recent and highly publicized breaches of ethics among members of the business community, there is a need to re-examine specific strategies employed in all kinds of organizations. Many business faculty members are comfortable teaching ethics in the classroom, but are we (as scholars and educators) appropriately challenging our own ethical practices? To assist in raising awareness of ethical concerns within the EURAM, we believe it is important to focus discussions on challenging our own ethics, particularly as faculty members in our various roles. Although there are professional ethical codes, there have been few venues for dialogue. This …

Cultures In The Making: An Examination Of The Ethical And Methodological Implications Of Collaborative Research, Chrstina Siry, Carolyne Ali-Khan, Mark Zuss
Publications and Research
This paper explores ethical and methodological implications of collaborative research, and we discuss our examination of ways to work towards participatory, ethical relationships in research. Our core concerns pertain to the experiential, lived and qualitative relations within emergent research communities. Questions that have guided us include: What does "we" mean in research practice? How do we become a community of researchers? What forms of relations are shaped in the continuous process of inquiry? Whose interests are served? How can a community of researchers and their participants, formed and sustained by reciprocal, ethical relations, of trust, shared knowledges, curiosity and friendship, …
Children’S Participation In Research: Some Possibilities And Constraints In The Current Australian Research Environment, Anne Graham, Robyn Margaret Fitzgerald
Children’S Participation In Research: Some Possibilities And Constraints In The Current Australian Research Environment, Anne Graham, Robyn Margaret Fitzgerald
Professor Anne Graham
This article draws attention to a number of critical issues that exist in the current Australian research context which simultaneously enable and constrain children’s participation in research. These include prevailing understandings of children and childhood, the emerging research assessment environment and the ethical frameworks that regulate children’s involvement in qualitative research. The discussion is framed by a number of questions that remain unsettled for the authors as they attempt to pursue research with and for children and young people that is unselfconsciously focused on ‘improving’ rather than ‘proving’ the social conditions that shape their lives.

An Exploratory Study of the Curricular Integration of Ethics in Executive MBA Programs
News headlines of corporate scandals have unleashed a contentious debate of whether or not graduate management education has contributed to corporate collapses and the resultant financial crisis. In particular, questions abound as to the willingness of Executive MBA program (EMBA) administrators and faculty to integrate ethics into the curriculum.
A sizable amount of research has been conducted and published on the curricular integration of ethics in graduate management education. Unfortunately, very little is known about the curricular integration of ethics in EMBA programs. Over time, the number …
Ethical Issues In Higher Education And Scientific Research: Erosion Of Academic Integrity, A. Singh, Bharathi Purohit
Ethical Issues In Higher Education And Scientific Research: Erosion Of Academic Integrity, A. Singh, Bharathi Purohit
Academic Leadership: The Online Journal
Ethics is the cornerstone of dental research or for that matter any research. Authorship in a scientific research is an important issue which requires considerable debate. The pressure to publish is well-established in the university community. Faculty member’s performance and promotion are judged by the number of published articles in academic scholarly journals. If survival means publish or perish, any and every effort to see one’s name in print becomes important. In such a situation, we should not be surprised to see the operation of the cliché, “You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours” (Lazar, 1995).
A Relationship Among Public School Leadership, Ethics, And Student Achievement, Don Jones, Christopher Hughes
A Relationship Among Public School Leadership, Ethics, And Student Achievement, Don Jones, Christopher Hughes
Walden Faculty and Staff Publications
ABSTRACT
Historically, it has always been important for school leaders to possess and adhere to high ethical standards. Ethical standards, when demonstrated by school leaders, inspire trust within students, parents and the community in general. This in turn builds support for the school and establishes an environment that is conducive to success.
However, with the advent of NCLB and high stakes testing, the pressure on schools to demonstrate improved student achievement has accelerated. Hence, the need for ethical leadership practices within public schools has never been greater. Yet, while much has been done to examine the relationship of various instructional …

Philosophy For Teenagers: Finding New Relevence In Old Concepts, Andrea Monteath
Philosophy For Teenagers: Finding New Relevence In Old Concepts, Andrea Monteath
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
In 2008, the Curriculum Council of Western Australia launched a formal curriculum of philosophy and ethics education for upper secondary students. This thesis is a writing project that provides a new teaching text in support of this course. The thesis is composed of two components, a creative project and an essay. The creative project is a work of non-fiction entitled, Philosophy for Teenagers: Finding New Relevance in Old Concepts, and has been researched and designed employing the Western Australian Certificate of Education (WACE) Philosophy and Ethics course model. Philosophy for Teenagers aims to provide an innovative introduction to concepts such …
Evaluating Life: Working With Ethical Dilemmas In Education For Sustainable Development, Moa De Lucia Dahlbeck, Johan Dahlbeck
Evaluating Life: Working With Ethical Dilemmas In Education For Sustainable Development, Moa De Lucia Dahlbeck, Johan Dahlbeck
Moa Dahlbeck
Codifications of human rights are widely understood as politically established instruments for evaluating human life. The call for such an apparatus emerges as a response to the age-old problem of social organization, constituting – in extension – a means by which to cope with the overall problem of survival. However, evaluating life is inherently problematic. It is problematic as it presupposes an already existing framework by which to judge all instances of life. In a way then, the impartial evaluation of life seems impossible from a human point of view. Nevertheless, as the problem of survival is one of continuous …
Consulting Ethics, William Feighery
Consulting Ethics, William Feighery

An important, if much neglected, arena within the field of tourism studies is the role of tourism scholars as consultants in the development process. For individuals within this field of ‘expert knowledge’ participation in consultancy projects often places them at the heart of complex and competing interests at local, national and international level. Such complexity necessitates ethically informed decisions. In this paper I first explore the evolution of tourism related research and consultancy, before considering the rise of ethics in arenas of professional practice. Further, I consider the Foucauldian construct of ‘technologies of the self’ as potentially offering an ethical …
