Expanding The Conversation: The Value Proposition Of For-Profit Institutions For African-American Post-Secondary Students, Thomasina O. Lawson, Mario Jackson
Journal of Research Initiatives
This article presents a different discourse to promote access to and equity in higher education by re-examining the value of for-profit education and its attractiveness to African-American students underserved by traditional institutions. The authors suggest that for-profit institutions face similar challenges to traditional schools in the matriculation of African-American students but to a larger degree. Guided by the spirit of researchers Asa G. Hilliard and Barbara Sizemore, the article offers a progressive view of improving African-American students’ access to higher education. An Investigation Of Successful Football Bowl Subdivision Coaches And The Disproportional Academic Achievement Of Their White And African-American Football Players, Peter Finley, Jeffrey Fountain

The purpose of this study was to identify and discuss the coaches and programs that have been successful on the field over the past five years, qualifying for bowl game participation, while simultaneously having low graduation rates for African-American players. The contractual incentives for athletic and academic achievement included in the coaches’ contracts are also presented for discussion purposes.

A flood of emails from various list serves filled our in-boxes with the shocking news: One of the world’s most prominent African American scholars, Dr. Henry Louis Gates, Jr. of Harvard University, had been accused of breaking into his own home. After America’s psychological honeymoon prompted by election of the first President of African descent, some were forced to grapple with questions of whether racism still exists. The aforementioned incident answers these inquiries with a resounding, “Yes.” Examples of accounts of continued racial prejudice and discrimination suggest the need for support systems and advocacy groups such as minority academic and …
