Staff Education: Improving Hypertension Management Among African American Adults, Marie Survie Tunis-Blanc
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
AbstractHypertension (HTN) is a frequent diagnosis in primary care settings and is disproportionately higher among African Americans. Observed in the clinic were frequent office visits by patients with uncontrolled blood pressure and nonadherence to medication in an outpatient cardiology clinic in Northeast New Jersey. Also, a knowledge gap was noticed among clinical staff on current HTN guidelines. An awareness of evidence-based guidelines was necessary to combat poorly controlled BP in the clinic. The purpose of this Doctor of Nursing Practice project was to create an education program on current HTN guidelines to bridge the knowledge gap among clinic staff. The …
Experiences Of African American Students In A Stem-Focused Community Program, Angela Blount
Experiences Of African American Students In A Stem-Focused Community Program, Angela Blount
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The United States has invested millions of dollars in STEM program initiatives; however, African Americans in STEM career fields are underrepresented. The purpose of this qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study aimed to explore the lived experiences of African-American first-year college students from rural communities in a STEM program and whether their experiences influenced their decision to pursue a STEM major in college. Spencer’s phenomenological variant of ecological systems theory (PVEST) was used to frame the study. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with eight African American first-year college students from rural communities. Coding analysis involved identifying meaning units and situated narratives …

A Case Study Of An African American Community's Perceptions Of Problems In Mathematics Education, Renee Jenkins
A Case Study Of An African American Community's Perceptions Of Problems In Mathematics Education, Renee Jenkins
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
African American students across income classes have been found to struggle with mathematics, impeding their ability to complete college, pursue lucrative careers, and address socioeconomic problems. Using the tenets of liberation and critical race theory, this qualitative case study explored the perceptions of a small group of 8 African American adults as to what they believe to be the root causes of mathematics achievement disparity for African American K-14 students, and what role the African American community can play in ameliorating these disparities. As most related studies are on low income communities, this study focused on an affluent African American …
African American High School Graduates' Perceived Academic Success Factors, Paula Williams Harris
African American High School Graduates' Perceived Academic Success Factors, Paula Williams Harris
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
A large number of African American students attending a low performing, urban high school in Tennessee demonstrated a lack of understanding in reading/language arts by scoring below proficient on the end of course (EOC) exam in reading/language arts. The purpose of this case study was to examine the perceptions of 10 African American graduates who scored proficient on the reading/language arts EOC exam to seek factors they associated with their academic success. This study was guided by Deci and Ryan's self-determination theory. The research question addressed the perceived factors that African American graduates associated with their academic success. Purposeful sampling …
Educational Intervention: Effects On Heart Disease Risk Factor Knowledge Among African Americans, Linda M. Smith
Educational Intervention: Effects On Heart Disease Risk Factor Knowledge Among African Americans, Linda M. Smith
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Abstract
Fatal coronary heart disease among African Americans is associated with a
disproportionate burden of cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk factors. Research has indicated that CVD risk factor knowledge and the prevalence of ideal CVH both persist at suboptimal levels. However, few researchers have investigated the relationship between culturally-tailored community-based heart health sessions, short-term knowledge acquisition of CVD risk factors, and the awareness of the American Heart Association's (AHA's) CVH construct. The purpose of this cross-sectional, secondary analysis study was to examine the interplay between these variables in an urban African American sample. Guided by social cognitive theory, the study analyzed …
