The American public school classroom has begun moving from the traditional furniture of education (hard plastic chairs attached to desks) to flexible mobile furniture as part of a holistic approach to creating a learning environment that enhances learning for its students. This project describes the process derived in the development and delivery of an asynchronous professional learning session aimed at helping teachers acclimate and engage new or adapted physical and psychological attributes to the learning environments in their care. Successful Extension educators artfully combine their content matter expertise with their ability to work with adults in an educational setting. This publication compares and contrasts four approaches to adult education: 1.) Andragogy, 2.) Adult Education Working Philosophy, 3.) Facilitating Adult Self-Directed Learning, and 4.) Integrated Perspective of Learning. The implications of these adult education practices will help Extension educators improve educational impact when working with adults.

Chautauqua and its cofounder, John Vincent, significantly contributed to the adult and higher education movement from 1874 to 1924. Four lessons are examined for adult educators: (1) vision of educating the masses, (2) importance of good leaders, (3) critical role of faculty, and (4) expecting and handling criticism and mistakes.
