The Effectiveness Of A Boys For Positive Change Program At Changing Attitudes And Behaviors Toward Gender Equality, Bethany Grupp

Capstone Collection

There has been tremendous research done regarding programs involving the empowerment of women, girls, and gender equality. Even Sustainable Development Goal number five focuses on gender equality. An analysis of the research reveals that most programs for girls and women address the inequalities and discrimination that they face, along with obstacles to girls’ access, completion, and retention in school. Increasingly, non-governmental organizations, the United Nations, and other international organizations have found that these programs are not changing the view of gender norms in society and that men and boys also need to be included in the discussion. This paper examines …

It refers specifically to the zero tolerance policy, which has intensified the movement of Black girls into the pipeline. After reviewing the literature, it was evident that the zero tolerance policy in combination with historical gender and race stereotypes surrounding Black girls, had resulted in implicit bias as a motivational factor in the way Black girls are being punished. Furthermore, …

A growing body of research affirms the positive impact of education abroad on career development, however, the value of this connection relies on students’ ability to intentionally “connect the dots” between study abroad and their bigger-picture academic and professional goals. Education abroad advisors, along with their counterparts in career services and other professionally-oriented advising, must consider how to help students identify transferable skills from study abroad and translate them for external audiences such as employers and graduate schools. The program proposed in this course-linked capstone is designed as a companion for semester-long mobility programs at Yale-NUS College. Informed by a …

The Earth Sciences Field Camp: A Short-Term Study Abroad Program Design, Catherine Tartaglia

Although short-term, these programs are nevertheless impactful and academically demanding. They require students to synthesize and employ the entirety of their scientific knowledge as well as collaborate with a team to achieve their learning goals.

Their experiential nature makes field camps the perfect opportunity for earth sciences students - who may, due to the nature of their curricula, be excluded from an …

Engaging International Transfer Students At University Of Washington Tacoma, Amber Hallberg Apr 2018

Engaging International Transfer Students At University Of Washington Tacoma, Amber Hallberg

Capstone Collection

International student social engagement on university campuses is increasingly challenging as more students transfer from community colleges and commute from long distances. Furthermore, international student programming has traditionally viewed appropriate engagement behavior through the lens of the host campus’ cultural norms, not through the lens of the students’ native cultural attitudes and behavior. As a result, the programming is unrelatable, overlooks international students’ actual needs, and/or poorly attended. This case study at the University of Washington Tacoma, which was conducted by an international student advisor, used qualitative research methods to examine the ways in which cultural dimensions and contexts may …

Based on theory, studies, and assessment of the current state of pre-service teacher education through interviews and literature review, Student Teaching Cuenca is designed to …

Closing The Circle: Comprehensive Study Abroad Reentry Programming In A Small Liberal Arts College, Dora Musini

However its counterpart, study abroad reentry, while also potentially transformative, isn’t equally widespread.

This paper describes an effort to fill this gap through the creation of a reentry program for Marlboro College, a small, liberal arts college in Marlboro, Vermont. In order to tailor the program to Marlboro students’ …

According to the Forum on Education Abroad’s State of the Field 2017 survey, more students on average studied abroad with third-party providers than with both private and public institutions combined in the 2016-2017 academic year.
