This study aims to investigate the effectiveness of digital leadership in supporting communication and collaboration regarding CCSS implementation in K-12 schools. In this study, 254 public school teachers from five school districts in Mississippi were surveyed. Results showed that principals were most effective in supporting professional development and digital citizenship. In addition, teachers’ age and teaching grades have an impact on the effectiveness of principals’ digital leadership strategies. Implications are …
Limitations Of Communication, Alfonso Ilipollito, Robert L. Stevens
Limitations Of Communication, Alfonso Ilipollito, Robert L. Stevens
Robert Stevens
As college teachers we have a responsibility to communicate to our students, not only for content which leads to understanding the subject matter we teach, but also to motivate and engage students to want to learn that content. Our student body is changing rapidly. Many of us teach not only “first generation” college students, but students that reflect our country’s diversity as well. To be more effective communicators we need to better understand the communication dynamics this change imposes on us.

The focus of this Capstone project is on strengthening the communication between parents and teachers by providing an alternative method of communication that will suit both parties. Both parties have expectations for one another that need to be communicated in order to benefit the students. The primary stakeholder perspectives surveyed were the parents of the children and the teachers and administrators. Three action options emerged from an analysis of the data and were explored as ways to address the issue presented. Parents were provided with access to an application called Bloomz, which is accessible by smartphones, tablets and computers.

International Teachers' Perceptions Of Leadership Practices For Effective Teacher Evaluations: A Qualitative Case Study, Megan E. Geshel
International Teachers' Perceptions Of Leadership Practices For Effective Teacher Evaluations: A Qualitative Case Study, Megan E. Geshel
CUP Ed.D. Dissertations
Many teacher evaluation systems in use today were developed in the early mid-1900s and reflect what educators believed about teaching at the time, which included only a few observable behaviors (Danielson & McGreal, 2000). Furthermore, many teachers find the evaluative process ineffective for professional improvement. The purpose of this qualitative study was to understand the teacher evaluation process, and how international teachers perceive the impact of school leadership practices for effective teacher evaluation. This study’s theoretical framework focused on the attributes found within transformational and transactional leadership practices, and how these affect the evaluation process. The research study provided evidence …

Lifespan Communication And Career Development Of Black Teachers: A Socio-Ecological Approach, Veronica Whinnett Hurd
Communication & Theatre Arts Theses
This thesis unlocks the lifespan story of nine Black participants as they reflected on the communicative practices that guided their career journey towards becoming a teacher. Through the lens of Bronfenbrenner’s (1979) socio-ecological development model, the microsystem, mesosystem, exosystem, macrosystem, and chronosystem were examined to understand the content of career-related memories and with whom or what the communicative experiences occurred with across the participants’ lifespan. This study also takes an in-depth look at how the content of the memories evolved across Erikson’s (1964) childhood, adolescence, and young adulthood developmental periods, and the influence of the proximal and distal socio-ecological environments …
Measuring The Longitudinal Communication Growth Of Learners Who Are Deafblind, Kristi M. Probst
Measuring The Longitudinal Communication Growth Of Learners Who Are Deafblind, Kristi M. Probst
Theses and Dissertations
The field of deafblind (DB) education has a long and rich history which includes a lack of qualified personnel to meet the needs of the population of learners. In addition, the literature base is small, lacking evidence for effective practices or methods of assessing and tracking growth with these learners. The ability to adequately track student growth is key when IEP teams are making educational decisions. Therefore, it is important to investigate the longitudinal growth of learners who are DB and the possible effects of service provision (number, type, and intensity) on communication growth. This research began the process of …

COMMUNICATION OF MEDICATION SIDE EFFECTS IN AN ACUTE CARE HOSPITAL
Effective patient education of prescribed medication side effects improves patient safety and reduces overall risk. On an acute care hospital unit, nursing staff felt previous attempts at this education had been ineffective as demonstrated by their HCAHPs scores for communication about medications.
A root cause analysis demonstrated some flaws and several countermeasures were instituted. The goal of this KPI project was to attain a higher than national average for the specific HCAHPs score.
Post KPI inception, the unit’s HCAHPs data showed steady improvement. Within one month, the goal of an …

The Impact Of Social Situations On College Students’ Perceptions Of Sexual Consent, Casey Jane Ward
The Impact Of Social Situations On College Students’ Perceptions Of Sexual Consent, Casey Jane Ward
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The majority of research examining sexual consent among college students focuses on how young adults communicate sexual consent during interactions immediately preceding a sexual encounter. However, preliminary research suggests that college students perceive that individuals begin to communicate sexual consent within social settings (e.g., at a bar) and through nonsexual interactions (e.g., text messaging); this has been labeled “outside the bedroom” consent. In order to further explore “outside the bedroom” consent, college students (n= 789) were randomly assigned to read four of sixteen vignettes. Within each vignette, four variables were manipulated: gender of the initiator (male or female), the social …

A Double Degree Program In International Communication: An Exemplary Case Of Global Citizenship, Zhe Wang
Electronic Thesis and Dissertation Repository
This study applies David Kolb’s (1984) experiential learning theory and Lynette Schultz’s critical global citizenship framework to explore whether and how students’ experiences participating in an international double degree program (IDDP) in transnational communication shape them as global citizens. Fostering global citizenship has become a significant aim that is embedded in many post-secondary institutions’ documents. A qualitative case study was conducted by Skype-interviewing past participants who completed the IDDP in transnational communication. The findings indicate students recognize that the value of this double degree program has positive impacts on their perceptions of global citizenship. However, both Canadian students and Chinese …

Embodying Character, Adapting Communication; Or, The Senses And Sensibilities Of Epistolarity And New Media In The Classroom, Jodi L. Wyett
ABO: Interactive Journal for Women in the Arts, 1640-1830
This essay describes a classroom role-playing activity that incorporates both modern social media and the tools of eighteenth-century composition. Students communicate with each other as characters in the assigned novel, by either texting, tweeting, or writing longhand with quill pens. The exercise aims to help students grasp the sometimes-elusive historical contexts of eighteenth-century writing as well as the ways in which we interpret and adapt those contexts and their attendant modes of communication when we read for meaning in our own moment. My experiences suggest that the activity is particularly effective at helping students to reflect upon their own interpretive …

An Exploratory Study Of The Impact Of Language On The Transition And Success Of Students In Their First College Year, Kathryn B. Wilhite
Masters of Science in First-Year Studies
ABSTRACT
In a time where colleges and universities are taking strides to consider their communication strategies with incoming students there appears to be a lack of attention on the language within communication pieces and what messages that language conveys to students. This study sought to examine this language through inductive analysis of four research questions which explored what the communication pieces are, what relationship they build, the discourse language present, and the strategies of empowerment language within the communication pieces distributed to all incoming first-year students at a large, public comprehensive four-year university in the Southeastern United States. Research on …

The Perceptions Of High School Counselors' Roles In Developing A College-Going Culture, Lisa Condra Davies
The Perceptions Of High School Counselors' Roles In Developing A College-Going Culture, Lisa Condra Davies
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The role of high school counselors includes providing equitable access to college and career opportunities for students (College Board, 2011). Attending college is viewed as a national priority that includes pre-college activities to promote postsecondary access (Savitz-Romer, 2012). High school counselors may have ambiguous roles that complicates their efforts (Engberg & Gilbert, 2014). Role confusion may arise when the high school counselors are asked to provide mental health services rather than professionally focus on college acceptance and completion for students.
The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of public high school counselors regarding their roles in …
