The Changing Role Of The Bass Clarinet: Support For Its Integration Into The Modern Clarinet Studio, Jennifer Beth Iles
The Changing Role Of The Bass Clarinet: Support For Its Integration Into The Modern Clarinet Studio, Jennifer Beth Iles
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The bass clarinet of the twenty-first century has come into its own. Composers often treat it as a solo instrument and clarinetists are more often expected to play bass clarinet. In the last half of the twentieth century, the amount of literature for bass clarinet has grown and the quality of the instruments have improved exponentially. Still, most university studios focus primarily on B-flat clarinet. This document is intended as a pedagogical guide for the inclusion of the bass clarinet in the clarinet studio. As support for incorporating the bass clarinet into the undergraduate curriculum, this document describes three areas …
A New Perspective On Underrepresented Student Completion: Self-Efficacy Beliefs Of Successfully Completed Underrepresented Students, Diana Alexandra Lourdes
A New Perspective On Underrepresented Student Completion: Self-Efficacy Beliefs Of Successfully Completed Underrepresented Students, Diana Alexandra Lourdes
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The student populations most at risk of non-completion are those who identify as low-income, first-generation, and Black or Hispanic, also known as underrepresented students. For years, the existing literature has primarily focused on why underrepresented students are less likely to graduate than their counterparts (Choy, 2000; Engle & Tinto, 2008; Ishitani, 2006; Pike & Kuh, 2005; Soria & Stebleton, 2012). Harper (2012) emphasizes that to increase the educational attainment of certain underrepresented groups, there must be a counter balance of research focusing on insights from students who were successful rather than the popular one-sided emphasis on attrition and failure. The …

The Attitudes And Beliefs Of Special And General Educational Professionals Concerning Alcohol And Drug Problems, Troy Wayne Kieser
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Drug and alcohol abuse is one of the greatest challenges of public education. Substance abuse affects student academic performance. Teacher attitudes concerning substance use are linked to drug and alcohol use by students. The purpose of this study was to assertion teacher attitudes and beliefs about drug and alcohol use. The data were collected using a questionnaire. The questionnaire was a modified version of the Addiction Belief Inventory (ABI) based on the five constructs (e.g., coping, efficacy, disease, lack of efficacy, moral weakness) of substance abuse (Broadus, Hartje, Roget, & Cahoon, 2010; Luke, Ribisi, Walton, & Davidson, 2002). The participants …

Reducing Health Disparities Through The 2015 Mcat: A Bold Goal Requiring On-Going Assessment, Aliya G. Feroe, Stephen F. Loebs
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
There is broad consensus that reduction in health care disparities is an important and multi-faceted challenge. One possible approach, among many others, starts with the attraction of women and men to the field of medicine who have a broad based education and who can demonstrate cultural understanding and sensitivity. In this context, the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) has been revised, effective in 2015, to include many additional questions concerning the psychological, social, and behavioral sciences. There are important assumptions fueling the revised Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and these will need to be tested. These assumptions range from influencing …
Impact Of Social And Cultural Factors On Teenage Pregnancy, Devi Akella, Melissa Jordan
Impact Of Social And Cultural Factors On Teenage Pregnancy, Devi Akella, Melissa Jordan
Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice
United States has the highest level of teenage pregnancy amongst the industrialized nations. Further, the level of teenage pregnancy is highest amongst the minority population. This research study examines the reasons behind high rates of early childbirth amongst African American teenagers. This study uses Bandura’s (1977) Social Learning Theory to deconstruct the factors, which influence and manipulate the overall behavior of the teenagers and initiates them to choose early motherhood over education and career. To ensure better quality of empirical data, the authors collaborated with the pregnant teenagers and a local non-profit community agency using a phenomenological analysis.

Modernizing Nevada's Education Structures: Opportunities For The 78th Session Of The Nevada Legislature, Magdalena Martinez, David F. Damore
Lincy Institute Reports and Briefs
Nevada's educational outcomes – both K-12 and higher education – are woeful. The consequences of this for the state's present and future are myriad and alarming. Poor educational outcomes mean that the state receives little return on investment from current educational spending. High dropout rates and sub-par academic achievement fail to instill the foundational skills necessary to put Nevada students on a path for future success. The dearth of Nevadans holding advanced degrees or certificates hinders economic development. In this brief, Modernizing Nevada's Education Structures: Opportunities for the 78th Session of the Nevada Legislature, Drs. Martinez and Damore review research …

Policy Issues in Nevada Education: Policy Papers
As citizens of the U.S., we want the nation to have a world-class educational system that enables our children to compete with the best that other nations have to offer. To accomplish this, school funding plays an important role. Educational funding, however, is usually neither adequate nor equitable (Sims, 2004). Adequate funding ensures that all students are able to meet intended objectives and goals of education. Equitable funding ensures a sufficient level of funding distributed within states that accounts for additional needs based on various student characteristics. There are different costs for educating groups of students, and this should be …

Policy Issues in Nevada Education: Policy Papers
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disability affecting 1 in 68 children in the United States. Individuals with ASD struggle with communication, behavioral, and social skills. The demands of addressing ASD present a significant challenge to Nevada; however, the challenges associated with inaction are much higher. Lack of access is the most critical issue facing families today. Without treatment, most individuals with ASD will require high levels of support throughout their lives at a high cost to families and society.

Given the prevalence and co-occurring nature of HIV and intimate partner violence among African American women there is a need for a risk reduction intervention. This study explored the results from an exploratory study of an HIV/AIDS prevention intervention for African-American women who have experienced intimate partner violence. The emphasis of this study is to identify lessons learned to guide future research.
Recruitment for the feasibility study was done in two waves over a period of three months. During the first wave, 22 participants were recruited for the intervention group, and in the second wave, 25 participants were in the …

Education And Educational Attainment In Southern Nevada, Jennifer Pharr, Courtney Coughenour, Shawn Gerstenberger
Nevada Journal of Public Health
Failure to complete high school has a direct impact on a person’s earning potential and quality of life. Higher levels of education are associated with better health. Because of this association, it is important for children and adults to have access to quality education. The percentage of adults who have successfully pursued higher education in Southern Nevada is lower than the peer Mountain West metropolitan areas and the national average. Nevada high school graduation rates are the lowest in the nation. High school graduation rates and dropout rates vary by race/ethnicity in the Clark County School District. High school graduation …

Many academic libraries partner with English composition in order to teach first year students skills related to academic research and writing. Due to the partnership between information literacy and first-year writing programs, it is important to evaluate how these programs can best support one another. The purpose of this study was to examine the impact of two factors on student information literacy skill development: library instruction and section theme—defined here as class sections of the English 102 (ENG 102) program developed around a central topic selected by the instructor. A random sample of annotated bibliographies from 95 sections of ENG …

Library Faculty Presentations
What makes a difference in student success? The framing questions for this presentation are:
-
What makes students stay in college and finish a degree? What prevents them from finishing?
-
What can librarians and faculty do to increase students' chances of succeeding at learning and at earning a degree?
This presentation will address high impact practices identified by George Kuh and adopted by the AAC&U, and give some examples of how libraries can support those high impact practices. It will also address student engagement, as measured by tools like the National Survey of Student Engagement or NSSE, and how libraries can …

Understanding And Creating The First-Year Seminar, Dan Gianoutsos
Understanding And Creating The First-Year Seminar, Dan Gianoutsos
Academic Success Center Faculty Research
Although students in higher education are increasingly becoming more diverse, one thing that students of all types have in common is that they struggle adjusting to college life (Keup & Petschauer, 2011 ). These struggles are most prominent during their first year of college (American College Testing, 2014). While many co-curricular programs have been deemed valuable in helping address first-year student challenges, a renewed and surging interest has emerged in an over-century old practice of providing face-to-face seminars geared toward helping students transition from high school to college (Keup & Petschauer, 2011). Today, first-year seminars are very common and exist …
