Parent Preferences And Evaluations Of Various Parenting Resources, June E. Stephens

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

A wide array of parenting information is readily available to parents. But, not all of this information is correct or credible. A survey of 57 parents was conducted in order to determine the types of parenting information sources most preferred, how often sources were used, and what criteria, if any, were used to evaluate those sources. Results showed that parents were most likely to consult friends and relatives for parenting information, and least likely to consult social media. Overall, it was found that most parents know how to appropriately evaluate the information they receive, but that others rely only on …

The Relationship Among Math Anxiety, Mathematical Performance, And Math Education In Undergraduate Nursing Students, Joshua D. Beall, Troy Roebuck, Paul Penkalsky

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Although nurses spend up to 40% of their day calculating and administering medication doses, undergraduate nursing students often perform poorly on nursing math exams. The purpose of this study was (a) to examine the relationship among mathematical education, performance, and anxiety and (b) to compare the mathematical education, performance, and anxiety in sophomore and senior baccalaureate nursing students at a public university in the Midwest. This cross-sectional, descriptive study was guided by Bandura's self-efficacy theory. Math performance was measured with an 11-item math instrument, math education was measured with number of math courses, and math anxiety was measured with Fennema–Sherman …

Effectively Preparing Special Education Teachers: Success In Urban Environments, Gabrielle Siegenthaler Jan 2015

Effectively Preparing Special Education Teachers: Success In Urban Environments, Gabrielle Siegenthaler

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

This literature review examines the level of preparedness of pre-service and novice special education teachers, specifically teachers pursuing education careers within urban school districts. It was found that using culturally responsive teaching has been proven to be effective within urban settings. Studies were also examined to determine if first-year teachers were well prepared and what teacher preparation programs could possibly implement to ensure that future educators are well equipped to effectively teach and manage the growing special education population of students in …

Creation Of A Portable, 3d-Printable, Iphone-Compatible Spectrophotometer, Elise K. Grasse Jan 2015

Creation Of A Portable, 3d-Printable, Iphone-Compatible Spectrophotometer, Elise K. Grasse

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

Spectroscopy is a widely used chemical and medical analysis tool. While spectrophotometers are commonly found in many universities and laboratories, they are not available to all high schools or laboratories in developing countries. The objective of this project was to design a high-quality, 3D-printable, iPhone-compatible spectrophotometer that uses a cell phone camera and interface to collect data. The created 3D-print file will be available to anyone with access to a 3D printer which are increasingly found in many laboratories and schools across the country. A low cost pre-printed kit will also be made for those without access to a 3D …

Creative Writing Programs As Supplement To The Common Core Standards To Support Literacy Among Inner-City High School Students, Chelsi L. King

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The adoption of the Common Core State Standards by Ohio in 2010 created a path of tightly organized learning targets that educators would take to ensure that students graduated with the literacy skills necessary to succeed in college and the workforce. The focus of these standards rests largely on the use of informational and nonfiction texts to supplement critical thinking and analysis. What may be lacking is an emphasis on the arts and creative writing as valuable assets to strengthening complex literacy and emotional and social development. Since creative writing is not heavily present in the Common Core, schools may …

Modeling The Progress And Retention Of International Students Using Markov Chains, Lucas Gagne Jan 2015

Modeling The Progress And Retention Of International Students Using Markov Chains, Lucas Gagne

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

International students are a small and diverse student population present in any sizable American university. One of the greatest obstacles in their path is the acquisition of the English language. English for Academic Purposes (EAP) programs, such as the English Language Institute (ELI) at the University of Akron, attempt to address this problem. By studying how this student population progresses in their academic studies, EAP programs and their associated universities can make well-informed decisions on how best to serve their English Language Learners. One way to study International students is through the use of a Markov model based on university …

Perfecting The Process Of Pairing College Roommates: A State Of The Art Review, Carly A. Corio

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The entirety of higher education is facing new budgeting and costly cuts to essential entities of the institutions. One of the most expensive and fiscally-beneficial parts of most college campuses are their residential facilities. With the thousands of universities in the country come hundreds of thousands of residence halls, all filled with pairs of roommates. Apart from a handful of them that self-select who they room with, the majority of college roommates are randomly paired using a computerized questionnaire that does its best to put two random individuals together in hopes that they are compatible as roommates. This state of …

The Importance Of A Strong Mathematical Foundation, Jasmine M. Wriston Jan 2015

The Importance Of A Strong Mathematical Foundation, Jasmine M. Wriston

Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects

The mathematical skills students learn from kindergarten through eighth grade are the foundational skills upon which all higher level mathematics courses build. It is highly beneficial that students master previous mathematics concepts, applications, and skills, prior to learning algebra and other higher level mathematical courses. Mastering elementary and middle level mathematics before learning algebra increases students’ chances for success when taking an algebra course. This study tested 39 ninth and tenth graders, from the college preparatory program Upward Bound, on the mathematical domains of fractions and ratios/proportions. Participants took one of two tests, each composed of three questions increasing in …

The methodologies of the project were to interview one administrator and two teachers from each of the school districts, and then observe each of the teachers that were interviewed. After the interviews and observations were conducted and examined, …

The purpose of this research project is to explore the perceptions and attitudes of past and current foreign language students regarding the relevancy of culture within foreign language education. The first portion of this paper contains a literature review from a variety of international research articles discussing the necessity, implementation methods, and assessment techniques for implementing culture within the foreign language classroom setting. While the research from the literature review emphasizes for researchers and educators the importance of including culture within the foreign language curriculum, very little research has been recorded regarding the perceptions and beliefs of foreign language learners. …
