Scribblescholar Was Here: Confessional Notes Of A Vandal Academic, Clay Shields
Scribblescholar Was Here: Confessional Notes Of A Vandal Academic, Clay Shields
Theses and Dissertations--English
As a (former) vandal-punk in the academy, I often fear succumbing to Ivory Tower Stockholm syndrome. The identities I perform, vandal-punk and scholar, ideologically clash to the point that they often feel irreconcilable. By codemeshing the high-low discourses associated with these adopted cultures, I attempt to disrupt any hierarchal privileging of either, instead searching for a way to live with and harness both.

Population Genetic Structure Of Asclepias Tuberosa In Northwest Iowa: A Comparison Within And Between Remnant Prairies And Commercially Available Seed, Jeffrey T. Ploegstra, Brittany De Ruyter, Tony Jelsma
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Isolated in scattered remnants, less than 0.1% of Iowa’s original tallgrass prairie remains. The small populations remaining are at risk for reduced genetic diversity, inbreeding depression, and outbreeding depression. In light of these concerns, we used microsatellite analysis to assess the genetic structure of butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa) populations on prairie remnants in northwest Iowa. We compared remnant populations with a restoration population at Dordt College in Sioux Center, Iowa, and with an Oklahoma seed source. Microsatellites identified for use in common milkweed (Asclepias syriaca) had sufficient polymorphism information content (PIC) across the butterfly milkweed ( …
Preparing For Service: A Template For 21st Century Legal Education, Michael J. Madison
Preparing For Service: A Template For 21st Century Legal Education, Michael J. Madison
Articles
Legal educators today grapple with the changing dynamics of legal employment markets; the evolution of technologies and business models driving changes to the legal profession; and the economics of operating – and attending – a law school. Accrediting organizations and practitioners pressure law schools to prepare new lawyers both to be ready to practice and to be ready for an ever-fluid career path. From the standpoint of law schools in general and any one law school in particular, constraints and limitations surround us. Adaptation through innovation is the order of the day.
How, when, and in what direction should innovation …

School Gardens: Cultivating A Child’S Nutritional Habits, Environmental Knowledge, And Sustainability Practices, Jeffrey Meltzer
School Gardens: Cultivating A Child’S Nutritional Habits, Environmental Knowledge, And Sustainability Practices, Jeffrey Meltzer
Honors Theses
School gardens have existed since the late nineteenth century and today are becoming increasingly popular in many parts of the world, including where I studied in Maine and Australia (AUS). Multiple organizations support school gardens in Maine, including the Maine School Garden Network, which has over 125 registered school gardens. In AUS, the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden Foundation primarily supports the school garden movement and has over 800 registered school gardens. While many researchers have studied school gardens, few have compared two countries, focused on environmental sustainability, or investigated Maine in particular. This thesis combines information from literature reviews, and …
Design In Tourism Education: A Design Anthropology Perspective, Kurt W. Seemann
Design In Tourism Education: A Design Anthropology Perspective, Kurt W. Seemann
Kurt W Seemann
When humans travel they are interacting with a range of digital, spatial, service flow systems and product experiences. These interactions can be perceived as positive or negative. They are usually socially contextualised by expectations, or the delight of being able to share the moment. This chapter develops a conceptual frame for how we may include design in the professional education of tourism graduate’s so they may enhance the human valued experience that people have with the made-world around them. A curriculum in tourism design has a wide pallet to research, develop and teach that may go beyond the traveller, to …
Culture In Design, Technology, And Environment: Reflecting On Field Experiences, Kurt W. Seemann
Culture In Design, Technology, And Environment: Reflecting On Field Experiences, Kurt W. Seemann
Kurt W Seemann
Culture is a fuzzy kind of idea. We all point to it when we see it among others, but when asked to place a universal boundary around it to define it as framing much of what we do ourselves, we run into trouble. When we design and develop made worlds with, and for, other cultures, or when we think how we engage in the worlds made by others, the opportunity manifests itself to see how culture can be embedded not only in the choices made to create the artifacts, systems, or symbols but significantly in the socio-cultural and even natural …
