Implementing Reading And Writing In Secondary Mathematics, Mari E. Eisenhart

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Literacy in secondary mathematics continues to be difficult for many. Mathematics teachers and researchers continue to develop support documents for secondary math teachers. It is important to utilize the literacy strategies already established by other content areas. It is feasible to adjust these strategies to suit the needs of mathematics students. Literacy across the content areas is a relatively new idea in education, but literacy in mathematics is even more foreign. It is necessary to use the available literacy strategies to develop materials applicable in the secondary mathematics classroom.

Response To Intervention And Implementing Early Math Intervention Programs, Megan Souther Aug 2010

Response To Intervention And Implementing Early Math Intervention Programs, Megan Souther

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The Response to Intervention (RtI) model has transformed the methodology behind education and the way teachers instruct their students. This model focuses on giving students the instruction they need before the gap between them and their peer' increases. This model was created using a three tier system. All students within a school receive instruction at one of these tiers. Many intervention programs have been created to help teachers instruct students at each of these tiers and in each content area. Unfortunately for teachers it can be overwhelming to decide which of these programs are going to make the biggest difference …

Mathematics In Motion: A Handbook Of Kinesthetic Teaching Strategies, Janie Brown Salazar Aug 2010

Mathematics In Motion: A Handbook Of Kinesthetic Teaching Strategies, Janie Brown Salazar

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Howard Gardner first proposed his theory of Multiple Intelligences and the bodily-kinesthetic intelligence in 1983. Unfortunately, almost three decades later, teacher programs still do not train teachers about Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence in depth; nor do they train teachers how to integrate Bodily-Kinesthetic intelligence into daily learning procedures and classroom environment. Schools focus very little on other factors that contribute to how successful a person might be in life, throughout life. Incorporating bodily-kinesthetic strategies in teaching can positively influence children's learning experience. The following research project investigates the research on the bodily-kinesthetic intelligence, bodily-kinesthetic teaching strategies, teaching strategies linked to student achievement, …

Goal Achievement Through Self-Directed Learning And Self-Regulation In Young Adulthood, Henry Murray Jun 2010

Goal Achievement Through Self-Directed Learning And Self-Regulation In Young Adulthood, Henry Murray

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The purposes of this research project were to: (a) explore the processes of self-directed learning and self-regulation throughout young adulthood, and (b) determine how young adults apply the concepts and principles of self-directed learning and self-regulation in goal setting and goal achievement. The researcher reviewed six major adult learning concepts and constructs, including self-directed learning and self-directedness, self-regulation and self-regulated learning, experiential learning, dialogue learning, critical reflection, and transformational learning, in order to better understand the autonomous and self-directed learning processes that adults engage in on a daily basis. A PowerPoint presentation with a practical goal setting and goal achievement …

Scenario Based Training In An Aviation Training Environment, Brenda A. Cox May 2010

Scenario Based Training In An Aviation Training Environment, Brenda A. Cox

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Trends in aviation training (i.e., the changes in pilot instruction proposed by the industry training standards represent changes in the content and delivery of pilot instruction) indicate a shift from traditional maneuver based training approach to incorporate training that is scenario based, which requires different skills and competencies. In this project, the author attempted to solve this problem by designing a PowerPoint presentation of strategies and techniques that pilot instructors new to the operational training environment can utilize when teaching scenario based training (SBT). The strategies are based on methods and techniques utilized by instructors/researchers who have spent years in …

Educational Implications Of High Stakes Testing, Nicole S. Caldwell May 2010

Educational Implications Of High Stakes Testing, Nicole S. Caldwell

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Student achievement has always been a critical concern in education, but it has become a particularly passionate issue since the passage of the No Child Left Behind Act in 2002. As a result of the act, standardized tests have become high stakes, and the futures of students, teachers, and schools have been put on the line. Research indicates that there are many negative implications of high stakes testing. The PowerPoint presentation developed for this project serves as an introduction to these implications and provides ideas for alternative assessment techniques. The target audience for this project is teachers, administrators, law makers, …

Transitioning A Lutheran Elementary School To Meet The Needs Of English Language Learners And Their Families: The First Two Years, Sara L. Doyle May 2010

Transitioning A Lutheran Elementary School To Meet The Needs Of English Language Learners And Their Families: The First Two Years, Sara L. Doyle

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

The number of students in American schools whose first language is not English has grown dramatically in the past twenty years. Crawford (2004) reports that the Number of Limited English Proficient (LEP) students nearly doubled in the 1990s. According to Crawford, the number of LEP students in 2001 was more than 8 percent of the K-12 enrollment in American public schools. Goldenberg reports (2008) that in 1990 one in 20 public school students was an English Language Learner (ELL) and in 2008 the figure was one in nine. According to demographers that number could rise to one in four within …

The Use Of Web 2.0 Technologies To Support Continuing Medical Education, Steven M. Folstein Apr 2010

The Use Of Web 2.0 Technologies To Support Continuing Medical Education, Steven M. Folstein

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

Physicians in the U.S. often turn to medical specialty societies as a primary source of the continuing education credits they need to maintain licensure and certification. In recent years, these requirements have been increased. Many physicians prefer live educational activities, but the cost of producing these events is prohibitive given the reduction in funding available to many societies. In this project, the author addressed this problem by developing a handbook for use by medical society members serving as volunteer faculty for continuing medical education (CME) activities. This handbook outlines a number of online tools, making use of the interactive qualities …

Using Simulated Human Models In Radiologic Technology Education, Scott L. Smith Apr 2010

Using Simulated Human Models In Radiologic Technology Education, Scott L. Smith

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

One of the challenges of modern medical schools is finding a way for students to practice their patient care skills before they interface with a live patient. Human simulated patients are realistic manikins that act like real patients in both sounds and actions. The technology these manikins offer needs to be supported by a well developed lesson plan that insures a student's transfer of learning. In this project, the researcher provides a scenario based lesson plan that allows the students to practice patient care skills safely, using simulated patients in a realistic environment. The use of such a curriculum allowed …

Eighth Grade Mathematics Curriculum Alignment For School District 27j, Frances Bell

Regis University Student Publications (comprehensive collection)

This project aligns the curriculum taught in eighth grade mathematics courses in School District 27J to the Colorado Academic Standards (CDE, 2009b). This project includes a yearly planning matrix, for implementation in the 2010-2011 school year. The review of literature defined curriculum and the benefits of curriculum alignment. This information helped to create the yearly planning matrix that aligned the current eighth grade resources to the new standards. The main goal of this project is to ensure that all students in eighth grade receive consistent instruction in each standard, which leads to success on the state standardized tests.
