Creation, Coordination, And Activation Of Resources In Physics And Mathematics Learning, Michael J. Wittmann, John R. Thompson, John Donovan

This project seeks to study introductory college level courses in physics, mechanics, and mathematics. The research questions involve the processes by which students become able to use resources across contexts (such as between mathematics and physics), how ideas in math and physics form a resource network, and what mechanisms trigger individual resources or coordinated networks.
The researcher will conduct clinical interviews, small group interviews, and statistical analysis of survey questions as well as videos from classroom and help sessions. The data being collected would be analyzed for purpose of describing the development of students as they refine skills in mathematics …

This project is a conference on the "Foundations and Frontiers of Physics Education Research," in which established and up-and-coming researchers attend a residential conference to further the work of the field. There are 60 participants, including senior graduate students, research scientists, junior, and tenured faculty. The conference consists of a series of plenary talks by leaders in the community; working groups of participants to address common problems in the field and present recommendations for future work; and targeted sessions in which research topics are explored in detail by participants. HIGHLIGHTS
Maine’s public universities awarded 5,484 degrees during the 2009-10 academic year; an increase of 95 over the previous year.
Nearly 75% of degrees conferred are at the baccalaureate level; over 16% at the masters level; nearly 5% at the associate level; and nearly 3% at the doctorate level (including law).
73% of all degrees are conferred at UMaine and USM; 9% at UMA; 8% at UMF; nearly 5% at UMPI; 4% at UMFK; and 1.0% at UMM.
Over 60% of degrees conferred are awarded to women and nearly 40% to men.

The Three Bands concert is an event that brings nearly 1000 people to campus to see performances by the University of Maine Concert Band alongside the bands of two local schools. This year the concert will take place at the Collins Center for the Arts on March 22, 2011, and we are requesting funding to bring in a guest conductor for this event. We propose to bring Dr. Andrew Trachsel of Ohio University during the week before the concert to work with each of the three bands. The Hudson Museum in collaboration with the Maine Indian Baksetmakers Alliance hosts one of the largest public events, which celebrates Maine Indian artforms and allows the University of Maine community and the general public to learn about Maine Indian history and culture. The Maine Indian Basketmakers Sale and Demonstration will be held in the Collins Center for the Arts on Saturday, December 11, 2010 from 9:00 to 3:00. This is the first time that funding to support the event has been requested from the Cultural Affairs.

We request a CA/DLS grant to help fund a visit by Professor Jonathan Gray (see bio below) April 7 - I0,2011, to address the contributions of communication studies to environmental issues. CA/DLS funds are particularly appropriate for the public performance event (#1 below), which has broad audience appeal on and off campus, and which contributes to the visibility of UM's new, interdisciplinary Sustainability Solutions Initiative for "quality of place" in Maine. The complementary events (#2,3,and4) will also attract a diverse audiences.

Spring 201 I Women's History Celebration, March 14 to March 31. This year's celebration will focus on getting young women involved with the issues that are at the forefront of their lives. The idea behind this year's WHC is to explore issues such as reproductive rights, domestic violence, body image, bullying, suicide, environmental toxins and other hot topics that women are confronted with everyday. As always, we will provide an array of speakers, panels, films, performances and displays that will reflect the diversity of women's experiences locally, nationally, and internationally.

The Dance productions for the 2010- 2011 season were an outstanding success. The Fall and Spring Concerts, together with the four emerging works showcases provided creative outlets for our students interested in dance, as well as provided significant entertainment for our audiences. The Fall Dance Concert and Emerging Works Concerts had respectable turnouts, and figures are not available for these since we do not run a box office for them. The Annual Spring Concert played to approximately 830 people during its two performance run.

The Music division will host Colonel Michael Colburn of the "Presidents Own" United States Marine Band in April 2011. He will conduct the UMaine Symphonic Band and the Concert Band at the April 5th concert for these ensembles at the Collins Center for the Arts. He will also teach a masterclass ln the Class of I 944 Hall for K-12 area teachers on April 2nd, in which the workshop participants will conduct the UMaine Symphonic Band and will be critiqued by Col.
