At the end of 2003, between 1,039,000 and 1,185,000 persons in the United States were living with HIV/AIDS (Glynn and Rhodes 2005) and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates that approximately 40,000 more persons in the U.S. become infected with HIV each year (CDC 2003). According to the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS (UNAIDS) and the World Health Organization (WHO), the international statistics are even more sobering: there were approximately 39.4 million people living with HIV/AIDS in 2004, and an estimated 4.9 million newly infected people in 2004 with 3.1 million human deaths attributed …

I used this presentation to close a two day Provost Advisory Council (PAC) off-campus retreat and to inspire strong collegial relationships among this important work group, which I chair. As part of the retreat activities, each PAC member delivered an “Expert Moment” presentation that was to highlight their discipline-related expertise in a way that would be relevant to the group. Generally, my discipline scholarship focused on predicaments in personal and professional relationships. So, in keeping with my recent focus on collegiality on campus, I drew upon literature about close personal relationships to set up an active discussion about what I …

The recent changes in the Canadian immigration system have led to the development of other programs designed to attract highly skilled immigrants. Bill C-50 was implemented in order to reduce the immigration backlog and match supply with demand on the labour market. Whatever the scheme, there’s one particular group of immigrants whose entry into the country has been encouraged via numerous parallel initiatives – the one of international students. Their retention is strategic because they could be just what Canada needs – young people proficient in the official languages, with Canadian credentials and work experience.

Dr Williams Emeka Obiozor
This paper discusses the teaching of life skills to urban American youths who are highly fascinated with the hip-hop culture—songs, raps, miming, lyrics, dressing and musical rhythms, especially individuals with emotional disabilities in the public schools. This is an instructional curriculum strategy to encourage positive and active participation of these students, promote perfect school attendance, encourage good behaviors, deal with anger management and motivate committed learning in the classroom. The instructors’ understanding of students’ culture, learning needs and styles, and using such background knowledge to educate them become imperative in this setting. These urge for innovative and leadership projects in …
