The Development Of A Single Scale For Mapping Progress In Mathematical Competence, Ross Turner, Gayl O'Connor
The Development Of A Single Scale For Mapping Progress In Mathematical Competence, Ross Turner, Gayl O'Connor
Ross Turner
The authors’ intention is to develop a progress map that describes increasing mathematical competence. The main purpose of this chapter is to describe the means by which the research team has been able to use the data from a longitudinal testing program to build and refine a picture of growth in mathematical competence. In this chapter, conceptualisation of the underlying variable to be measured in developing a mathematical progress map is considered, and approaches to its development are discussed. The approach adopted is described and the results of the application of that methodology to the data generated through this research …
A Best-Evidence Synthesis Of The Relationship Of Multiple Intelligence Instructional Approaches And Student Achievement Indicators In Secondary School Classrooms, Ethan E. Hodge
Master of Education Research Theses
The purpose of this study was to synthesize the literature in order to assess and quantify (if possible) the relationship between MI instructional approaches and student achievement indicators in secondary school classrooms (grades 6-12). This study employed the best-evidence synthesis methodology devised by Robert Slavin. Criteria for study inclusio n included germaneness, minimization of bias, and validity. This study allows for several conclusions: (1) a very limited amount of research focusing on the relationship of MI instructional approaches and student achievement indicators in secondary school classrooms exists, (2) instances of MI instructional approaches vary widely in methodology and implementation but …
The Relationship Of Parental Involvement And Home Culture Factors To Student Achievement, Leonard J. Clark
The Relationship Of Parental Involvement And Home Culture Factors To Student Achievement, Leonard J. Clark
Doctoral Dissertations
A study was conducted to examine the relationship among student achievement, responsive parent involvement, and home culture factors such as reading aloud, shared reading, oral language, monitored television viewing, and library/bookstore visits. The study focused on two research questions: (1) Which home culture factors facilitated student achievement? and (2) What did parents do at home to facilitate student achievement? A sample of 240 parents of third graders who took the Iowa Test of Basic Skills in northwestern and northeastern Louisiana schools completed a survey to determine factors of parent involvement and home culture. An exploratory factor analysis was performed on …
Differences In Teacher Qualifications And The Relationship To Middle School Student Achievement In Mathematics, Carrie R. Ferguson
Differences In Teacher Qualifications And The Relationship To Middle School Student Achievement In Mathematics, Carrie R. Ferguson
Doctoral Dissertations
The purpose of the study was to compare mathematics teacher preparation and experience to the achievement of middle school students (grades 6–8) on the mathematics section of the Texas Assessment of Knowledge and Skills (TAKS). Using a theoretical framework, the research examined the extent to which the teacher qualification variables were related to the student achievement. Measures of teacher qualifications included four independent variables: (a) number of mathematics content hours, (b) level of teaching certification, (c) number of years teaching experience, and (d) number of years teaching middle school/junior high mathematics. Participants in this causal-comparative study included 97 teachers and …
Effects Of Technology Education On Middle School Language Arts (Reading) Achievement, Mark A. Bolt
Effects Of Technology Education On Middle School Language Arts (Reading) Achievement, Mark A. Bolt
OTS Master's Level Projects & Papers
The purpose of this study was to compare eighth grade students at Rachel Carson Middle School who took eighth grade Technology Education and the effect it had on student achievement on the reading section of the Virginia English Standards of Learning test.
Will Reduced Class Size Improve Reading Achievement?, Lisa Reeves
Will Reduced Class Size Improve Reading Achievement?, Lisa Reeves
The Corinthian
The purpose of this causal comparative study was to examine the effects of reduced class size on reading achievement for second grade students. It is hypothesized that there will be a significant gain in reading achievement for students in a reduced class setting. It is also thought that of those students, boys and minority students will show a considerable increase in their reading achievement. The experimental group receiving small group instruction (n = 82) while the control group (n = 88) from a previous year received reading instruction as a whole with all of their classmates. The procedure consisted of …
Effects Of Integrating Writing Activities On Students' Attitudes And Achievement In Problem Solving: An Action Research Study, Kelly Culbert
Effects Of Integrating Writing Activities On Students' Attitudes And Achievement In Problem Solving: An Action Research Study, Kelly Culbert
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
This action research study investigated my practice of using writing activities in the mathematics classroom. The study was conducted to determine the effect of integrating writing with mathematics on students' achievement in, and attitudes towards problem solving, and the relationship between students' attitudes and their achievement in problem solving. The study was conducted over a six-week period. Students participated in daily problem solving activities. Data were collected using a problem solving themed writing rubric for evaluating student journal responses, anecdotal records, and using a pre- and posttest problem solving attitude inventory. In this study, students demonstrated overall increased mathematical knowledge, …

Prediction Of K-5 Student Achievement Using Teaching Candidate Performance On The Teacher Work Sample: A Predictive Validity Study, Gretchen Louise Braun
Prediction Of K-5 Student Achievement Using Teaching Candidate Performance On The Teacher Work Sample: A Predictive Validity Study, Gretchen Louise Braun
Theses and Dissertations
This study is a predictive validity study investigating if teaching candidate performance on the teacher work sample predicted post-assessment achievement of K-5 students. Teaching candidate scores on the teacher work sample for 124 pre-service teachers were matched with the post-assessment scores of the 1,321 K-5 students to whom they taught a one- to two-week instructional unit. The pre-service teachers were in a semester-long field placement prior to student teaching in four rural, low-income elementary schools. Three of the thirty-two individual indicators of the teacher work sample were significant predictors of K-5 student achievement: knowledge of community, school, and classroom factors …

The Interactive Question Protocol: Examining The Relationship Between Feedback, Cognitive Development And Student Achievement, G. Simon Richmond
The Interactive Question Protocol: Examining The Relationship Between Feedback, Cognitive Development And Student Achievement, G. Simon Richmond
Theses and Dissertations in Urban Services - Urban Education
Feedback is an essential component of effective learning. The advent of the internet as a delivery mode for distance education has expanded the access many people have to higher learning. Despite many advantages that online courses provide for distance learning students, they often lack real time feedback. A software intervention called the Interactive Question Protocol was designed for this study to provide automated, real time feedback. That treatment was then contrasted against changes in student achievement, satisfaction and participation. Learners can be categorized by Perry's scheme of mental maturity according to how they understand and interpret the knowledge they acquire. …
