What Do Young Children Know About Numerosity? : Implications For Teachers, Keely J. Beam
What Do Young Children Know About Numerosity? : Implications For Teachers, Keely J. Beam
Graduate Research Papers
"Numerosity" is the ability to count a set of objects using the correct number names in the proper order. Fuson and Hall (1983) assert that the use of cardinal words is one measure of the development of number knowledge. Using words in a cardinal context indicates that children are beginning to understand the "manyiness" of objects. The use of cardinal words is one of the best indicators that a child is beginning to understand counting and the underlying principles involved.
Numerosity is a concept which children often, but not always, demonstrate with overt behaviors. Understanding cardinality and numerical order, develops …

The Effects Of Acceleration On The Attitudes Toward And Achievement In Mathematics, Nancy Preece Mcgill
Graduate Research Papers
This study examined the affects of participation in accelerated mathematics classes on the attitudes toward and the achievement in mathematics of thirty-five seventh, eighth, and ninth grade students and their parents. The respondents, from a small rural school district, completed a survey consisting of an open-form question and ten statements designed to elicit perceptions regarding their attitudes toward and achievement in mathematics.
Results indicated that parental attitudes were significantly more positive than students as a result of participation. Results also showed that participation produced no harmful effects and, in fact, many respondents expressed a desire to continue taking accelerated classes. …

Using Interactive Writing With Reluctant Writers, Candis Frieden
Graduate Research Papers
Interactive writing provides an authentic opportunity for children to learn the conventions of writing while constructing meaningful text. As the teacher and children compose a text together, children are active participants in analyzing sounds and constructing words. While writing, children develop strategies for spelling. Interactive writing gives children confidence to use invented spelling which increases children's independence in writing.
A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Fredrick A. Johnson
A Preferred Vision For Administering Secondary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Fredrick A. Johnson
Graduate Research Papers
This reflective paper is my vision of the role of a forward looking Secondary Administrator who effectively uses educational research to impact school improvement in a positive fashion. It is, in effect, a snapshot that includes two sections. Some personal history, characteristics, and core values are in the first section. The final section is a composite reflection that synthesizes knowledge, skills, and attitudes gained through coursework and from experience into my professional vision for administrative practice. I think brain compatible computer-assisted learning can be a component of effective education and the research cited reflects that.
Collateral Positions In Student Affairs, Lisa L. Kidd
Collateral Positions In Student Affairs, Lisa L. Kidd
Graduate Research Papers
Staff members in student services argue that students have become their responsibility by the default of the faculty. Faculty members, insisting that they are the university, do not want budgets for student support to remain large or to continue growing. Students want both faculty members and support personnel to pay attention to them. Administrators, legislators, and the public want to see budgets cut. The tensions are palpable.
The constant tug of war between faculty and staff for larger budgets places more pressure on universities to allocate funds equitably. In doing so, the use of collaborative positions have increased. By increasing …

Coordinating General Classroom Reading Instruction With Reading Recovery Instruction, Jane E. Bentley-Gadow
Graduate Research Papers
"Our Nation is at risk. Our once unchallenged preeminence in commerce, industry, science, and technological innovation is being overtaken by competitors throughout the world" (The National Commission on Excellence in Education, 1983, p. 5). 3 These were the opening words published in a 1983 letter to the people of the United States entitled, A Nation at Risk: The Imperative for Educational Reform. In 1981, the National Commission on Excellence in Education was created under the direction of the Secretary of Education, T. H. Bell. Its purpose was to investigate issues in America's education, define problems and identify solutions (The National …
Androgogy And K-12 Technology Staff Development : Towards Effective Practice, Craig Barnum
Androgogy And K-12 Technology Staff Development : Towards Effective Practice, Craig Barnum
Graduate Research Papers
Many K-12 technology staff development programs are based upon pedagogical models. Adult learners require a different set of design and facilitation skills referred to as andragogy. The primary goal of adult education in any arena is to produce independent life long learners. This is particularly valuable in the ever changing realm of technology. To engage this task Knowles and Brookfield each identify six guiding principles that construct a framework for designers and facilitators of adult education programs to follow. The process of meaningfully integrating technology into the schools requires substantial change to current instructional methods. K-12 technology staff development designers …
Success At Last : One Teacher's Growth In Understanding Of Writer's Workshop, Cindy L. Davis
Success At Last : One Teacher's Growth In Understanding Of Writer's Workshop, Cindy L. Davis
Graduate Research Papers
Writer's workshop is an approach to teaching writing that corresponds to the whole language philosophy. Much of the literature published on the topic of whole language, and specifically writer's workshop, describes the ideal classroom environment. However, "whole language in the intermediate classroom is often given less attention in professional books and journals than the primary classroom receives" (Gannon-Smith, 1991). As a reading and language arts teacher of sixth grade students, I have been interested in teaching writing through the use of writer's workshop. There are some general whole language themes which can be used to build a motivating writing environment …
Emotional Quotient : Predicting And Teaching For Future Success Of Students, Denise A. Hale
Emotional Quotient : Predicting And Teaching For Future Success Of Students, Denise A. Hale
Graduate Research Papers
Emotional Quotient (EQ) involves virtually every aspect of a person's life and plays a more important role in predicting success for students than the traditional Intelligence Quotient (IQ). Emotional intelligence involves recognizing one's emotions, thus having a sense of self-awareness, managing and controlling one's emotions, motivating oneself to achieve a set goal, responding with empathy, and handling interpersonal relationships with appropriate social responses.
Many children today are deprived of natural opportunities to develop a healthy EQ. Through modeling and continued reinforcement starting in the early elementary grades, EQ can be taught. Teachers can provide literature experiences as the basis of …

This paper summarizes what is currently known about these potential impacts of child sexual abuse. The various problems and symptoms described in the literature on child sexual abuse are reviewed in a series of broad categories including post-traumatic stress, emotional pain, avoidance, an impaired self, and interpersonal difficulties. Research has determined that the extent to which a given individual manifests abuse-related distress is a function of an undetermined …
A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Randall W. Strabala
A Preferred Vision For Administering Elementary Schools : A Reflective Essay, Randall W. Strabala
Graduate Research Papers
Why is it that some people give up the relative security and comfort of working with children in the classroom to join the principalship? Why do these same people choose to leave an area where they are the perceived expert in their field for an area where one's decisions are constantly questioned and criticized by those he or she works for and with? These are difficult questions to answer and in a rational sense, there are not a lot of logical responses for why some individuals decide to devote the effort necessary to understand and achieve the position of the …
Literacy Tutoring: A Qualitative Study On Tutor And Tutee Interactions, Kimberly R. Staebell
Literacy Tutoring: A Qualitative Study On Tutor And Tutee Interactions, Kimberly R. Staebell
Graduate Research Papers
One-to-one literacy tutoring has been promoted as a solution for an increasing number of children who are struggling with reading in the regular classroom. This tutoring refers to an individual tutor working with a single child on literacy activities (Wasik & Slavin, 1993). This type of tutoring is said to be effective (Wasik & Slavin, 1993). One-to-one tutoring, for example, allows for supplemental reading time and the chance for more reading to occur. Morris (1990), notes that "an opportunity to learn to read is of critical importance" (p. 134 ). This opportunity is reflected in an individual tutoring situation which …
Instructional Technology In The School System, Sherri Sue Zanotti
Instructional Technology In The School System, Sherri Sue Zanotti
Graduate Research Papers
Analyses of the deployment of technology in schools have tended to note its failure to affect the daily values and practices of teachers and students. This absence is generally regarded as an implementation failure, or as resulting from some temperamental shortcoming on the part of the teachers or technologists. Such a construction is predicated on the assumption that the technology is value free and its implementation a struggling playing field. This paper proposes that no instructional technology is ever neutral. Its value and practices must support the organization into which it is placed. The failures of technology to look and …
