A college campus is supposed to he a place that fosters diversity open-mindedness, exchange of ideas and, above all, freedom of expression. Congratulations to all of you who may have been offended by the material in the September issue of Klipsun but chose to ignore your own bias and open your mind to new ideas.

Chris Cooper's art is graphic, even gross. We know that. There have been suggestions that we chose to run the images simply because we had them and wanted to increase our readership through cheap shock value. Some people have questioned the appropriateness of the images …

Report Of The 1997 Survey Of Citizen Perceptions Of Tourism In Bellingham And Whatcom County, Carl Simpson

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

At the request of the Bellingham•Whatcom County Convention and Visitors Bureau, the Western Washington University Office of Survey Research (OSR) surveyed residents of Whatcom County concerning their perceptions of tourism locally. The OSR conducted 606 telephone interviews during the period April 2 through April 22, 1997. The Convention and Visitors Bureau wished to measure citizen perceptions and knowledge of tourism and to assess what factors lead citizens to be more or less favorable toward tourism. The study is, in this sense, a baseline study of Spring, 1997 perceptions that may change over time. The particular questions asked in this survey …

Hello again, it s your good friends at Klipsun. We've whipped up another tasty potluck of stories for you. Hope you're hungry.

You will be appalled and engaged by the cover piece on Gary Goldfogel, Whatcom County's medical examiner. Yes, folks, he dissects dead bodies to find out how they got that way It, sounds gross, but what's so fascinating about Goldfogel is he doesn't shut down emotionally when he’s at work. It’s his desire to provide answers for grieving families that keeps him focused.

We’ve got stories on Russians, soap opera addicts, the producer of Highlander, and much much …

Better Teams Through Type, Jeremy Dwyer Apr 1997

Better Teams Through Type, Jeremy Dwyer

WWU Honors College Senior Projects

When business people are asked what skills are most important in business, and especially management, they often answer “ability to communicate with other employees.” Successful communication though, takes more than mastery of English and knowing a few things about active listening. Effective communication requires the ability to understand, and appreciate, how the other person thinks. If people don’t understand their differences they will communicate in different ways and the efficiency and cohesion of your organization will suffer.

Type theory, upon which this course is based, attempts to describe personalities so that people can come to understand, and appreciate, the perspectives …

At long last! The March issue you’ve all been waiting for. (You’d better have been waiting. Don’t make us come over there.)

This time,we tried to go easy on you. No stories about illegal narcotics, no stories about god or AIDS or the JWE. (Okay, we did let a grisly story about railroad crossing deaths slip through the cracks.)

Our cover story is a big, happy profile of a local ’zine publisher. You may be wondering why you never see this man's face in our pages. “Karlos the Jackal”, as our colorful source prefers to be called, doesn’t want to …

An Analysis Of Native And Transfer Characteristics As Expressed In 1995 Cirp Survey Findings, Gary (Gary Russell) Mckinney, Joseph E. Trimble

Office of Institutional Effectiveness

Though this report will deal mostly with the differences between transfers and native freshmen, their most important similarity should be mentioned first: both cohorts were new to Western; both were expected to confront unfamiliar surroundings and experiences. This basic fact is, from an administrative point of view, also one of extreme importance. The primary reason for the development of the Transitions program and for the continuing use of summer and freshmen orientation programs was to improve the University's efficiency. Numerous assessment reports have indicated that there can never be too much advising. Findings support what common sense would intuit: the …

The golden Buddha on the cover of your copy of Klipsun does not necessarily appear courtesy of divine intervention.

If God appeared in the Klipsun office while we were trying to select stories for an issue, we'd probably tell him (or her) to leave the box of pizza and keep the change. Fortunately we have some people on staff who are more conscientious about the concept.

Leaders of various religions shared their views on the Divinity with Martina and Quincy, authors of our story about god. The descriptions these people gave were similar in a few ways, but more importantly, …
